(vinified entirely with whole clusters; 40% new oak): Good full red. Lovely high-pitched aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice and violet. Deep, sappy and vinous, with an enticing savory/sweet quality to the intense flavors of wild dark berries, violet and graphite. Finishes with firm-edged tannins, a very primary medicinal black cherry note, and lovely floral lift. This will need at least four or five years of bottle aging. Chef de cave Sieve noted that the domain owns parcels on either side of the tower in Clos Vougeot, with part of its vines located in a frost pocket that was hit hard in December of 2009.

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is one-third whole cluster, less than in recent years according to winemaker Brian Sieve, with almost 50% new oak. It has a beautiful bouquet with scents of blackberry, raspberry coulis, crushed strawberries and seams of wet limestone underneath. The oak is seamlessly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very focused and taut with pure black cherry and crushed strawberry on the tensile finish. This is a very stylish, quite ambitious Clos de Vougeot. It has a refined, menthol-tinged bouquet that feels quite complex and focused, incense aromas developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a little graphite developing toward the precise, sustained finish. It needs a little more flesh and grip on the finish, but otherwise this is a finely crafted Clos de Vougeot.

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru contains one-third whole bunches and offers a floral bouquet with wilted rose petal, thyme and brambly red fruit, gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and moderate depth that it doesn't quite kick on towards the finish. Not bad, but a little "contained".

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-94)

Perfumed, refined nose offers lemon, crushed stone, ginger and lavender. Superconcentrated, dense and tactile wine, with almost painful energy to its lemon and stone flavors thanks to strong mineral-driven acidity. The invigorating, rising finish displays superb length. Offers uncanny texture and flavor intensity for a wine with a moderate 12.6% alcohol.

Bright yellow. Very ripe aromas of lemon oil, grilled nuts, toasted bread and brown spices. Fat, rich and very ripe, with mineral and spice flavors accented by lemon zest, lime and lavender. This initially struck me as weightier and less classic than the 2015, but the wine's strong spine of stony acidity gives it terrific penetration and really frames and extends the fruit on the long finish. Still, this big, smooth wine is showing beautifully today. Winemaker Sieve notes that the south/southeast exposition of the vines gives this wine a crunchy fruit character along with considerable weight.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)

Bright yellow. Licorice, crushed stone, lime and wild herbs on the nose, lifted by hints of quinine and ginger. Tactile, savory and intense, conveying terrific crushed-rock mineral definition for the vintage. Wonderfully concentrated and long, without any impression of weightiness. This wine represents a blend of 45-year-old vines and vines planted in 2007. Production here was 35 hectoliters per hectare, according to winemaker Brian Sieve.

The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from Les Pougets and matures in just under 30% new oak. This has a vivacious and tensile bouquet with orange zest and Japanese yuzu aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite taut for a Corton-Charlemagne but it is graced with impressive balance. The spicy finish is welcome. This is a finally crafted Grand Cru.
