This initially struck me as weightier and less classic than the 2015, but the wine's strong spine of stony acidity gives it terrific penetration and really frames and extends the fruit on the long finish. Still, this big, smooth wine is showing beautifully today. Winemaker Sieve notes that the south/southeast exposition of the vines gives this wine a crunchy fruit character along with considerable weight. |

Vinous (91)The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has quite a lot of oak on the nose, although it seems in sync with the redcurrant and cranberry fruit underneath. It is fragrant and become increasingly floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of red fruit and impressive mineralité. This is one of the most terroir-driven Cortons of the vintage, presumably its limestone soils are expressed on the finish. Promising. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has a complex nose of dark berry fruit mixed with touches of meat juice and spicebox, slightly musky, with neatly integrated oak. The poised palate offers grainy tannins, crisp and crunchy red berry fruit laced with orange peel, and gentle grip toward a finely proportioned finish that lingers beautifully. Bon vin. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. |
