  • Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 1997 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

Full ruby-red color. Gamey aromas of currant, espresso and nutty oak. Deep, rich and very ripe, with concentrated, sappy flavors of currant, licorice and game. A tactile, full, traditional Brunello with good vinosity and big, mouthdusting tannins. I would have rated this higher but for its rather pronounced meaty character and slight finishing dryness.

  • Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96+)

The Altesino 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva holds tight to its unique character and power. The classic 2016 vintage produced generous wines that are layered and rich but also coiled tightly at their core. This wine exemplifies this point, adding lots of tart Sangiovese fruit and freshness along the way. It also shows an impressive richness of flavors with dried cherry, licorice, pressed violets, balsam herb and dusty limestone. The caveat with this wine, should you decide to drink it early, is that it needs extra time to open (and a double decanting would also help). This 10,000-bottle production opens beautifully in time.

  • Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a dark beauty, slowly unfurling with dried cherries, exotic sweet spice, fresh tobacco and hints of mint. It’s rich and dense in feel, yet lifted by cooling acidity, as ripe black fruits easily wash across the palate, leaving bitter-tea-like tannins that collect toward the close. The finish is tannic and drying, yet not severe, leaving nuances of plum and lavender to linger. The vintage has left its mark on the 2017 Riserva, yet cellaring will help relieve its youthful structure. That said, I don’t see it as a candidate for extended aging.

  • Antinori (Braccesca) Bramasole Cortona Syrah 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

A racy, flamboyant wine, the 2011 Syrah Bramasole hits the palate with superb depth and intensity, while retaining considerable nuance for such a big wine. Dark-fleshed stone fruit, smoke, violets, new leather and licorice flesh out in the glass, along with attractive floral notes from the inclusion of 3% Viognier in fermentation. This is a decidedly Tuscan Syrah built on broad shoulders and fruit intensity.
  • Antinori (Braccesca) Bramasole Cortona Syrah 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

I find it hard to get excited about the 2013 Syrah Bramasole. The dark, pruney, chocolatey flavors and overripe character aren't especially interesting.
  • Antinori (Braccesca) Bramasole Cortona Syrah 2018 (6x75cl)

This is cool-toned, pliant and pleasantly sweet, with a fresh display of inner violets, minerals and bright acids that keep the mouth watering. Nuanced tannins and sweet spice linger as this high-energy Cortona Syrah tapers off with blue and purple-toned florals. The 2018 Bramasole is stunning and so easy to like.

This is soft and deeply textural, guided by brisk acids and salty minerals which mix with its masses of ripe dark fruits to create a harmonious expression. • Antinori Badia A Passignano Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is remarkable wine in many ways. For starters, the 2013 is the first vintage of the Badia a Passignano done entirely in cask and in a more refined style than was the norm in the past, when this wine was rather bombastic. Outrageously beautiful, vivid and voluptuous, the wine is dark and enveloping, with tons of character and remarkable finesse.

    Vinous (93)

Rich dark fruits, spiced cookie, smoky plums and black cherries define the 2018 Syrah Bramasole.

  • Antinori (Braccesca) Bramasole Cortona Syrah 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

Crushed ashen stone, peppery black fruits, camphor and lifting mineral tones waft up from the 2019 Syrah Bramasole. This is soft and deeply textural, guided by brisk acids and salty minerals which mix with its masses of ripe dark fruits to create a harmonious expression. Aggressive tannins saturate toward the close. There’s so much potential here and with incredible length. A “wow” wine for sure; one that will provide a long and steady evolution in the cellar.

  • Antinori Badia A Passignano Chianti Classico Riserva 2009 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (92)

The estate's 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Badia a Passignano bursts from the glass with expressive dark cherries, plums, flowers and cloves. The Badia a Passignano is a bit brighter and more focused than the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva, largely because it is 100% Sangiovese. Hints of tobacco, leather and cedar add further nuances on the soft, resonant finish. Over the last few years, the Badia a Passignano has been one of the most improved wines in the Antinori range.

To be sure, this site will always produce ample, broad wines, but the 2013 is also incredibly elegant.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is a terrific example of how responsive Sangiovese can be to site. Here, the flavors are darker and richer, while at the same time the wine possesses a level of textural resonance and breadth that distinguishes it from the more linear wines Antinori makes at the Tignanello vineyard. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol fill out the wine's frame effortlessly. This is another stellar wine from Antinori.

The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is dark and sumptuous, with its soft contours very much in evidence. In 2017, the Badia a Passignano is not quite as potent as it can be, but in exchange it will drink well pretty much right out of the gate. Time in the glass brings out red tonalities of fruit and sweet floral notes, along with hints of cedar, spice and red cherry that linger.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
