The 2003 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca d’Morissio is a powerful, seamless wine endowed with masses of dark fruit. This is a rather opulent, almost port-like Barolo from Mascarello that captures all of the best qualities of the 2003 harvest while avoiding the hard tannins that plague so many wines. A blast of iron, tar and smoke informs the long, virile finish. This will be a fascinating Barolo to follow over the coming years and decades. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2033.Inc. VAT£496.00 -

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca d’Morissio is totally seamless and beautiful. It possesses gorgeous textural richness and finesse with virtually no perception of tannin. Rose petals, flowers, raspberries and mint come alive in the glass, but it is the wine’s subtle yet insistent chalky minerality that is the thread that holds the wine together. This is a hugely impressive Barolo with a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034.Inc. VAT£607.73 -

This red is still in its shell for now, only hinting at its full potential. Reserved aromas of flowers, strawberry and cherry are augmented by menthol, tobacco, spice and mineral flavors as this unfolds on the palate. The tannins keep a firm grip on the finish, but this shows elegance and delicacy overall. Just needs time. Best from 2016 through 2036. 300 cases made.Inc. VAT£421.46 -

The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is one of the defining wines of this iconic vintage. This important wine was not made in 2009 or 2011. There will be releases in 2012 and 2013. However, the Mascarello family is not yet sure about 2014. If they do release the wine in that vintage, bottle production will be very small. Generally speaking, 4,000 bottles is the normal production target. This wine should be released more or less as this report is published in late spring 2018. There is a lot to say here, starting with the bouquet that is precisely defined and layered. You get tones of forest fruit, crushed mineral, wild sage and balsam herb. There are renderings of iodine, anise seed and licorice as well. What stands out most is the wine's seamless integration. The tannins are firm and dry, with just enough latitude to offer future development. This wine ages in bottle for two and a half years before its commercial release. It should not be touched for at least 5 more years, or preferably more.Inc. VAT£660.26 -

The Giuseppe Mascarello 2012 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is only made in the best vintages. We did not see the wine in 2009 and 2011, but we did see it in 2010 and 2013. I have some reservations regarding this expression from the hot 2012 vintage. I tasted the wine at two separate moments, and although my first impression was one of enthusiasm, I was disappointed to see that it did not hold very long once the bottle was opened. This is a delicate and fragile wine that starts with wild berry and tobacco but ultimately reveals sun-drenched fruit, scorched earth and dried cherry skin. The quality of the fruit is very ripe, open and probably prone to some oncoming oxidation due to the hot and dry growing conditions. My suggestion is to catch this iconic wine on the near side instead of the far side.Inc. VAT£2,240.75 -

This wine has been resting quietly in bottle since 2018 while getting ready for its release, which should be within the next month or two. The 2013 Barolo Monprivato Riserva Cà d'Morissio benefits from a long and slow growing season, just what the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape likes best. This wine delivers rich volume and a fine texture, with a pretty point of fresh acidity that is neatly buried behind bright fruit tones of cassis, dried cherry and rose hip. Earthy tones are woven within, and the wine shows slightly spicy highlights of licorice and tar that point to some of the subtle bottle evolution already underway. Generally speaking, the fruit in 2013 doesn't have the same power that we saw in the 2016 Barolo Monprivato (also reviewed here), but it does offer similar depth and elegant complexity. This is a collectors' bottle for sure.Inc. VAT£1,175.04 -

Good bright, deep red. Crushed blackberry, cassis and violet on the nose, plus notes of game and bitter chocolate; like a blend of serious Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanee. Offers compelling purity, sweetness and depth of fruit, with a powerful acid structure giving the mid-palate a perfumed quality and carrying the juicy fruit through a resounding, rising finish. There's great back-end grip here without any impression of austerity, thanks to the ripeness of the year. This is incredibly primary for juice that's been in barrel for nearly two years, but keep in mind that it won't be bottled for another 18 months. Still, it's likely to be a knockout. (I also tasted a very pure and vibrant sample of Brunate, which was a sour cherry fruit bomb with a liqueur-like ripeness supported by powerful spine, but I was not able to try the barrel of Le Coste.)Inc. Our first flight showcases two fabulous 2008 Barolos, wines from a vintage that continues to impress. The Barolo Brunate (formerly Brunate-Le Coste) gets most of the attention at Rinaldi. I am curious to see how the Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is holding up. The answer is very well. Bright, linear and focused, in the style of the year, the Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is fabulous. The 2012 Barolo Tre Tine is lifted, precise and gracious, with beams of firm supporting tannin that give the wine its energy and sense of proportion. Tasted next to the Brunate, the Tre Tine is distinctly more aromatic, delicate and feminine in style, with plenty of bright red fruit and floral overtones. I also tasted the 2012 from a bottle opened two days prior, and the wine had retained pretty much all of its precision. Although the Brunate is the most coveted wine at Rinaldi, the Tre Tine has been impressive in its first three vintages. The 2012 is no exception. Delicately fragrant and incredibly refined, this stunning red boasts alluring scents of blue flower, rose, wild berry and a whiff of new leather. It's captivatingly ethereal and elegantly structured, offering crushed strawberry, red cherry, cinnamon and white pepper. It's also impeccably balanced thanks to firm polished tannins and bright acidity. While it's already extremely tempting, hold for even more complexity. Drink 2023–2043.Inc. VAT£365.06 -

The 2014 Barolo Tre Tine is nervous and tightly wound, with good precision and a bit more austerity than is the norm. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014, although I suspect the wine will always be a bit aggressive because of the effects of hail. There is good delineation to the bright red stone fruit, tobacco and floral notes. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 develops in coming years.Inc. VAT£2,787.84

It's captivatingly ethereal and elegantly structured, offering crushed strawberry, red cherry, cinnamon and white pepper. It's also impeccably balanced thanks to firm polished tannins and bright acidity. While it's already extremely tempting, hold for even more complexity. Drink 2023–2043.In Bond£301.00 -

It will be interesting to see how the 2014 develops in coming years. In Bond£2,286.00
