Achaval Ferrer
Within a short period of time, the meteoric rise of Achaval Ferrer is certainly testament to the quality of their vineyards in Mendoza. Established in 1999 by friends from Argentina and Italy, they are fortunate to have found backing by Stolichnaya group, which gives them free reign to continue on producing high quality Malbec and single-vineyard wines.

Wine Advocate (96)The 2009 Finca Mirador was sourced from vines planted in 1921 and yields of 0.9 tons per acre. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it sports a captivating nose of sandalwood, exotic spices, espresso, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. Layered on the palate with a velvety texture, it conceals enough structure to evolve for at least 3-4 years. This nicely proportioned effort will deliver prime drinking from 2015 to 2029. |

Vinous (91+)(14.8% alcohol; from heavier soils): Bright medium ruby. Pungent, medicinal aromas of blueberry, blackberry, espresso and mint complicated by mineral and leather nuances. Plush, rich and deep, communicating an almost chocolatey ripeness to its slightly medicinal flavors of dark berries and leather. The most massive of these single-vineyard wines and also the mostly obviously alcoholic in its slight warmth. Boasts excellent breadth and well-buffered tannins but can't quite match the Altamira or Bella Vista for class or inner-mouth energy. This large-scaled, slightly wild wine has plenty of tannins for cellaring. |

Vinous (94)The 2019 Malbec Finca Altamira hails from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley, and was aged for 13 months in 80% new French barrels. A rich, reddish-purple in the glass. The complex aromas feature plum with hints of country herbs, camphor and thyme accompanied by whiffs of violet and mint. The aging process adds notes of tobacco and cedar. In the mouth, it delivers a nuanced, high-pitched flavor supported by a juicy, relaxed and polished tannic structure. A characterful, energetic wine that ends with a compact but lingering fruity flourish. |
