The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny la Combe d'Orveaux offers pretty, well-defined scents of dark cherry, bergamot and bay leaf aromas, not intense but elegant or "transparent," as they say. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit. I like the balance and oak integration. Very poised and fresh toward the elegant but persistent finish. Excellent.

Medium red. Sweet red fruits complicated by menthol and licorice on the nose. Lush, broad and sweet in the middle palate, then a bit more taut on the back half, finishing with dusty tannins and lingering red fruits. With limited mineral and floral lift, though, this lacks a hidden dimension.

The 2016 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Le Grand Maupertui is showing very well from bottle, opening in the glass with intense aromas of wild blueberry, cassis, spicy soil tones, licorice and violet. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with excellent depth and dimension at the core, displaying more concentration and fine-grained structure than the 2017 rendition and concluding with a pure, mineral finish.

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru may well be the domaine’s best wine this vintage. It is endowed with more fruit intensity and presence on the nose, offering vigorous raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, superb mineralité and hints of orange blossom developing in the glass. The well-balanced palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and impressive substance and tension toward the finish. An excellent Clos de Vougeot from Anne and Julie Gros.

Palish red. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and soil are less precise than those of the Vosne-Romanee. Supple in texture but a bit autumnal after the last sample. Shows a bit of lift from rose petal but some edgy acidity gives the finish a spiky quality today and needs time to harmonize with the wine.

Grown in a single parcel that is 32 years old, this is a winsome Ech zeaux. It's an outpouring of pristine pure red fruits laced with minerality and sprinkled with sweet spices. Outgoing and welcoming, it reminded me of Anne's huge smile. (So often one can see the winemaker in her wine!) The gossamer structure definitely feels rather Vosne-like, even though this second smallest climat sits just about in the heart of Ech zeaux. 2023-36

Good medium red. More serious, tangy aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke. Moderately saturated bright red. Aromas of strawberry, raspberry and menthol show a slightly decadent quality but also terrific lift. Marvelously silky and seamless, with its subtly sweet red fruit flavors complicated by spices, juniper berry and Cuban cigar tobacco and accented by a peppery topnote. At once spherical and firm, this soil-driven beauty has reached its plateau of peak maturity but should hold there for a good while. The acidity is nicely integrated and the mounting dusty tannins show a light touch. Anne Gros told me she'd prefer a rounder style but this wine was among the very best 2001s I tasted in Burgundy this fall.

(-) Medium red. Complex nose melds sweet red fruits, minerals and cocoa. Silky and aromatic in the mouth, with expressive, highly nuanced flavors of red and darker berries, exotic spices, leather, game and flowers, plus an intriguing saline quality. This boasts early appeal owing to its sheer sweetness but also possesses a fairly solid tannic spine for aging.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2023 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru, from vines planted in 1904, has an inviting nose: raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, touches of cranberry coming through with time and a dash of Provençal herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry and gentle grip, well balanced with a harmonious, lightly spiced finish that lingers tenderly.

The 2021 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru is understated and well-defined on the nose: brambly red fruit and crushed stone, touches of pressed flower. Again, this has a transparence that I admire. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, elegant and poised, gently building towards a cohesive, harmonious finish. Nicely poised and whilst not built for long-term ageing, it will dish out mid-term pleasure.

A fresh mid ruby with glycerol legs. Very elegant with a welcome crispness too. Fluid in a very good way. Liquid raspberries and alpine strawberries which flow across the palate. A few refined tannins to finish. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Good medium red. More serious, tangy aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke. Wonderful sweetness on the palate; really stuffed with fruit and yet less forthcoming today-perhaps more dominated by its structure- than the Clos Vougeot. Finishes long and firm, with a suggestion of medicinal cherry.

    Vinous (95)

(like the Clos Vougeot, this was aged in 90% new oak) Medium red. Deep, sappy aromas of cherry, menthol, flowers and tobacco. Penetrating, aristocratic and gripping, with great nervosite Seems much more primary in the mouth than on the nose, with cool mineral and purple fruit flavors. Firmly structured, young and very long. This also needs a good six or seven years.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92)

(-) Medium red. Complex nose melds sweet red fruits, minerals and cocoa. Silky and aromatic in the mouth, with expressive, highly nuanced flavors of red and darker berries, exotic spices, leather, game and flowers, plus an intriguing saline quality. This boasts early appeal owing to its sheer sweetness but also possesses a fairly solid tannic spine for aging.
