(13.7% alcohol, after multiple tiny additions of sugar totaling just 0.2% to prolong the fermentation, according to Anne Gros; aged in 70% new oak): Medium red. Fresh, pure but reticent aromas of raspberry, spices and earth. Very ripe but initially reserved, hinting at wild raspberry, soil and dark chocolate. Aeration brought building inner-mouth perfume, revealing the wine's superb sappy depth and spicy lift. Not demonstrative today but one can sense the serious underlying structure of this wine, not to mention its rare combination of density and finesse of texture. Finishes with sexy sweetness, tangy tannins and terrific length.

The 2016 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Le Grand Maupertui is showing very well from bottle, opening in the glass with intense aromas of wild blueberry, cassis, spicy soil tones, licorice and violet. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with excellent depth and dimension at the core, displaying more concentration and fine-grained structure than the 2017 rendition and concluding with a pure, mineral finish.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru has an intense, quite penetrating bouquet with copious black cherry and cassis scents interwoven with rose petal and violet aromas. The palate is quite dense and multi-layered with dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf that builds towards quite a backward finish that will requite 8-10 years to reach its drinking window. A lot of wine in this Clos Vougeot.

Good bright medium red. Inviting aromas of raspberry, crushed stone and smoky minerality. Round, sweet, silky and fine-grained; showing less piercing fruit today than the village Vosne but significantly more texture and volume. Finishes broad and lightly saline, with substantial ripe, horizontal tannins buffered by the wine's mid-palate richness. It wouldn't be criminal to drink this wine now, said Anne Gros.

Grown in a single parcel that is 32 years old, this is a winsome Ech zeaux. It's an outpouring of pristine pure red fruits laced with minerality and sprinkled with sweet spices. Outgoing and welcoming, it reminded me of Anne's huge smile. (So often one can see the winemaker in her wine!) The gossamer structure definitely feels rather Vosne-like, even though this second smallest climat sits just about in the heart of Ech zeaux. 2023-36

Blackberries and black currants mesh with violets and sweet herbs on the nose. The palate turns a bit darker with fresh mushrooms and damp earth. There's even an exotic whiff of incense. There is terrific sap and energy here with lean, svelte tannins and racy acidity aplenty for longevity. This comes from 60- to 70-year-old vines in Les V roilles, positioned between DRC and Leroy. 2024-38

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru has a beautifully-defined bouquet, dark berries with lots of undergrowth, light shaved black truffle aromas. The mineralité shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, crisp and quite linear for a Richebourg. Though not persistent as recent vintages, it maintains superb focus with a residual white pepper tinged aftertaste. Excellent.

    Vinous (86-88)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux felt quite closed on the nose, maybe a little disjointed compared to the other crus from Anne Gros. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity, but it does not quite fan out or achieve a higher level toward the finish. So-so.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux comes from a single 0.39-hectare parcel. This has a lovely bouquet of pure dark cherry fruit, cassis and subtle violet aromas that pinpoint the commune. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and gentle grip. Silky-smooth with a persistent finish. Elegant and sensual.
