    Bosquet des Papes

Bosquet des Papes has been a family run estate in Chateauneuf for 5 generations; it still maintains a traditional feel even today. The superb vineyards are mainly in the north of the Appellation – in top lieu dits like Pignan, Gardioles, Gardine, and Mont-Redon. The Chante le Merle cuvee is the product of 80-90 year old vines on the famous galets roulets soils; the Tradition, 40-50 year old vines on more diverse terroir. Both are mainly Grenache with a proportion of Syrah and Mourvedre.

    Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2016 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

A terrific example of this bottling, the 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Tradition is a blend of 75% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and tiny amounts of Cinsault, Counoise and Vaccarèse. About 40% was destemmed in this textbook vintage, the fruit coming from 40 different parcels around the appellation. Floral and raspberry notes emerge on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied but silky textured, ending on subtle shadings of Provence herbs and licorice. It's a relative bargain that's easy to drink now, but it should easily go a decade or more in a cool cellar.

    Jeb Dunnuck (94-97)

Made from 100% Grenache that was partially destemmed, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape A La Gloire de Mon Grand-Père is straight up awesome looking barrel sample. Sporting a deep ruby color and perfumed notes of strawberries, incense, Asian spices and dried garrigue, this beauty is full-bodied, layered, and opulent on the palate, yet with no weight and a graceful, balanced style. It has fine tannins which are still mostly covered by loads of fruit at this stage. It’s going to be hard to resist on release, yet should have two decades of longevity.

    Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)

Almost all Grenache (there are splashes of Cinsault and Clairette), the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape A La Gloire De Mon Grand-Père was 50% destemmed and brought up in a mix of foudres and demi-muids. It has a riper, sexy bouquet of kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, toasted spices, dried flowers, and sweet Provençal garrigue to go with a full-bodied, beautifully textured, seamless style on the palate. It still has a classic feel, yet there’s certainly more fruit and opulence here compared to the more concentrated, masculine style of the Chante Le Merle cuvée. This beauty is going to drink nicely right out of the gate and cruise for 15-20 years as well.

The all whole-bunch 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes is 85% Grenache, with the balance a mix of Mourvèdre and Syrah. The vines are all 80 to 90 years old, selected from parcels in Brusquières, Gardiole, Mont-Redon and Pignan. Glorious raspberry and cherry fruit picks up hints of mint and some stemmy notes, but they're remarkably well-integrated and should be completely absorbed within a couple of years. Full-bodied, rich and creamy in texture, this tour de force remains lively, silky and long on the finish. I was blown away by the prodigious fruit in the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes. Moving to the old vine cuvée, which is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes reveals a deeper ruby/purple color as well as a richer, slightly more powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, jammy black cherries, roasted garrigue, black licorice, and assorted background notes of spicy meatiness. It’s full-bodied and has a beautiful mid-palate, building tannins, and a great finish. This is another classic yet ripe, pure, and beautifully balanced wine from this estate that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15+ years or more.

Brilliant ruby-red. Powerful, mineral-accented raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of incense, vanilla and pungent flowers. Supple and impressively concentrated, offering sweet red berry, cherry liqueur and lavender pastille flavors lifted by juicy acidity and a jolt of white pepper. Wine Advocate (97)

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape la Folie is a special cuvée that has only been made three times: in 2007, 2015 and 2016. As Nicolas Boiron points out, it's a modern style of Châteauneuf, completely destemmed and aged in demi-muids and barriques, with a fair proportion of those barrels being new. Mocha cedar notes mark the nose at this early age, while the flavors resemble caramelized cherries and baking spices. Full-bodied, rich, creamy and undeniably plush, it's still recognizable as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, showing velvety hints of chocolate on the long finish. The assemblage is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Folie might not match the magical 2016, but it’s no less a brilliant wine with a subtle modern style in its black raspberry, kirsch liqueur, cassis, peppery garrigue, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. Always the most modern style cuvée in the lineup (it sees a small amount of new oak), it nevertheless never loses its Southern Rhône soul and is full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, with ripe, seamless tannins and a great finish. This wine is roughly 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that was all destemmed. It should drink well with 2-3 years of bottle age and keep nicely for 15 years or more in cold cellars.

    Vinous (93-95)

Brilliant ruby-red. Powerful, mineral-accented raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of incense, vanilla and pungent flowers. Supple and impressively concentrated, offering sweet red berry, cherry liqueur and lavender pastille flavors lifted by juicy acidity and a jolt of white pepper. Plush yet lively; finishes on an emphatic floral note, showing excellent clarity and fine-grained tannins that build slowly.

Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Folie 2016 (6x75cl)
