Bosquet des Papes

Bosquet des Papes has been a family run estate in Chateauneuf for 5 generations; it still maintains a traditional feel even today. The superb vineyards are mainly in the north of the Appellation – in top lieu dits like Pignan, Gardioles, Gardine, and Mont-Redon. The Chante le Merle cuvee is the product of 80-90 year old vines on the famous galets roulets soils; the Tradition, 40-50 year old vines on more diverse terroir. Both are mainly Grenache with a proportion of Syrah and Mourvedre.

Leading off the barrel samples, the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape offers an impressively concentrated, rich, powerful style as well as classic aromatics of scorched earth, black cherries, blackberries, and pepper. It’s an old-school powerhouse done brilliantly.

Jeb Dunnuck (91-93)

Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Nicolas Boiron showed beautifully, with lots of classic black raspberry and jammy berry fruits intermixed with plenty of peppery garrigue, new leather, and dried bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. It’s certainly a classic style of wine, yet it has beautiful fruit, medium to full-bodied richness, notable purity, and a great finish. A no-brainer for the classic Châteauneuf du Pape lovers out there, it’s going to drink well on release and shine for 15 years or more.

Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape A la Gloire de Mon Grand Pere 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)

Almost all Grenache (there are splashes of Cinsault and Clairette), the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape A La Gloire De Mon Grand-Père was 50% destemmed and brought up in a mix of foudres and demi-muids. It has a riper, sexy bouquet of kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, toasted spices, dried flowers, and sweet Provençal garrigue to go with a full-bodied, beautifully textured, seamless style on the palate. It still has a classic feel, yet there’s certainly more fruit and opulence here compared to the more concentrated, masculine style of the Chante Le Merle cuvée. This beauty is going to drink nicely right out of the gate and cruise for 15-20 years as well.

Wine Advocate (97)

A remarkable effort, the blockbuster 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes comes close to the 2010 in terms of quality. Coming from a selection of the top plots and old vines of the estate, co-fermented, and with no destemming, it offers off-the-charts notes of cassis, chocolate-covered cherries, garrigue, licorice and toasted spice. Possessing massive richness and depth, with tons of glycerin, texture and length, it stays remarkably elegant, balanced and pure on the palate, with building tannin and yet no hard edges. This knockout Châteauneuf will have two decades of longevity and should not be missed!

Vivid ruby. Pungent red berry, cherry liqueur, incense and anise scents are sharpened by a suggestion of peppery spices and a zesty mineral quality. Delivers intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that show outstanding clarity and slowly gain sweetness in the glass while picking up a sexy floral pastille nuance. This very youthful, decidedly pure wine unwinds very nicely with air and finishes extremely long, offering gentle sweetness and slow-building, harmonious tannins.

Wine Advocate (97-99)

I was blown away by the prodigious fruit in the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes. Quantities are only maybe half of the 2016, so you can imagine how concentrated and rich this baby is. Waves of raspberry and cherry fruit are seductive on the nose, then crash over the palate with a tsunami of concentration and power. If time in the cellar can coax some additional elegance out of the wine, it could be a candidate for perfection.

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)

Moving to the old vine cuvée, which is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes reveals a deeper ruby/purple color as well as a richer, slightly more powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, jammy black cherries, roasted garrigue, black licorice, and assorted background notes of spicy meatiness. It’s full-bodied and has a beautiful mid-palate, building tannins, and a great finish. This is another classic yet ripe, pure, and beautifully balanced wine from this estate that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15+ years or more.

Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Folie 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape la Folie is a special cuvée that has only been made three times: in 2007, 2015 and 2016. As Nicolas Boiron points out, it's a modern style of Châteauneuf, completely destemmed and aged in demi-muids and barriques, with a fair proportion of those barrels being new. Mocha cedar notes mark the nose at this early age, while the flavors resemble caramelized cherries and baking spices. Full-bodied, rich, creamy and undeniably plush, it's still recognizable as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, showing velvety hints of chocolate on the long finish. The assemblage is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Folie might not match the magical 2016, but it’s no less a brilliant wine with a subtle modern style in its black raspberry, kirsch liqueur, cassis, peppery garrigue, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. Always the most modern style cuvée in the lineup (it sees a small amount of new oak), it nevertheless never loses its Southern Rhône soul and is full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, with ripe, seamless tannins and a great finish. This wine is roughly 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that was all destemmed. It should drink well with 2-3 years of bottle age and keep nicely for 15 years or more in cold cellars.
