Branaire-Ducru

In 1680 Branaire-Ducru was part of the massive Beychevelle estate. When the owner died in a world of debt the estate was broken up and sold in lots. Branaire-Ducru was one of them and traces its independence to this date. Since Patrick Maroteaux bought Branaire-Ducru in 1988, the wines have improved in quality year on year. Maroteaux was the first to use gravity to fill the tanks in the winery, assisted by Philippe Dhalluin who went on to work for Mouton Rothschild. These gradual small improvements have made a big difference in the glass. Now this 60ha, 4th Cru Classé is one of the better value quality wines to buy in Saint-Julien today.

Wine Enthusiast (95)

Here is a huge ripe and luxurious wine, with great power. The texture is solid, filled with firm tannins, the flavors are black and ripe. Along with the power, though, is much of the elegance and poise that characterizes great Saint-Julien.

The successful 2002 exhibits a beautiful, dense ruby/purple color, a lovely concoction of raspberries, cassis, flowers and licorice in the fragrant aromatics, medium to full body, surprising opulence for a 2002, and soft and supple tannin. A beauty, it is ideal for drinking now and over the next 15+ years.

Branaire-Ducru 2006 (12x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (90-93 )

(67% cabernet sauvignon, 27% merlot, 4% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc) Bright ruby with a blue rim. Pure, floral aromas of dark berries, bitter chocolate, licorice, violet and mint. Dense, sweet and fine-grained, with a firm spine of acidity and a peppery nuance framing and enlivening the dark berry and mineral flavors. Quite youthfully tight, sappy and classically dry wine, finishing juicy and bright but not hard, with firm, building tannins. Already hints at the complexity to come. This has an IPT of 74, not much below the 76 of 2005.

Branaire-Ducru 2008 (1x600cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (93)

Opaque purple-ruby. Very rich nose offers sweet blueberry syrup and blackberry jam aromas, with a topnote of nutmeg and crystallized ginger. Also quite spicy on the palate, where it boasts great purity to its blackberry and plum flavors. Quite concentrated and long, though it seems almost light thanks to wonderfully harmonious acids. Finishes with still youthful but very polished tannins and a late kick of cracked black pepper and smoked bacon. Owner Patrick Maroteaux feels this is one of the five best Branaires of the last 25 years and he won't get any argument from me.

This rich, full wine shows the chateau to be at the top of its form. It's finely balanced, pushing both its fruit and acidity, with the tannins taking the supporting role. With its power leashed, this shows the stylish side of Saint-Julien, although it will certainly age for many years.

Very attractive aromas of currants, tile and sandalwood with black and red currants. It’s full-bodied with a tight, dense center-palate that remains closed in and tight. Yet there is underlying seriousness and length to this. Perhaps the greatest Branaire-Ducru ever made. Try after 2026.

The 2020 Branaire-Ducru is utterly magnificent. A wine of extraordinary depth and dimension, the 2020 possesses tremendous intensity right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice, cloves and lavender build as into the explosive, palate-staining finish. I don't think I have ever tasted a Branaire quite like this.
