    Chacra

    About Chacra

Bodega Chacra is Piero Incisa della Rochetta's personal project in Patagonia. As a member of the great family responsible for the mythical Sassicaia, his vineyard management and winemaking skill come with unquestionable pedigree. Hailed by James Suckling as one of the great “eye-openers” in Patagonia, della Rochetta is crafting “unique Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs” currently receiving thunderous critical acclaim.

Despite the unrivalled familial pedigree of Piero Incisa, the estate certainly doesn’t rely on its famous association alone. Recently joining forces with Jean-Marc Roulot, the most esteemed producer in Meursault, the collaboration has given Chacra's wines “a new soulful energy” (JS). Now amongst the most “transparent to the unique soils and microclimates” ever, these cuvées have come to rival many of the world's great wines.

A brambly array of bright, ripe dark fruit with a lithe and juicy feel that carries a bold, deliciously fresh array of dark-cherry and blueberry flavors long on the finish. Zingy and energetic. 10 to 15 per cent stems in fermentation. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The tension and density are so in balance, showing flint and matchstick notes. Full-bodied, creamy and very salty with a long, focused finish. Love the tight, subdued character here. A thoughtful, serious wine that needs contemplation. Drinkable now, but better in 2022 and onwards.

This is probably the finest answer to Puligny or Meursault in Argentina and it will be hard to pass by. Beautiful brioche notes give a fine creaminess with mineral, fine reduction, beeswax and a hint of white sesame to the lemon curd. Extremely textured and tense on the palate with fresh, medium acidity and a long, long finish. This is all about texture and purity. Also intellectual. Drink or hold. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Bright light yellow. Lively aromas of nectarine and peach are complemented by a sexy leesy nuance. Highly concentrated, savory wine with terrific saline mineral intensity to its rather plush stone fruit and lemon flavors. Densely packed, deep and vibrant, this fully ripe Chardonnay finishes with excellent palate-coating length. (12.5% alcohol; star Meursault winemaker Jean-Marc Roulot consults on Chardonnay at Bodega Chacra)

I love the beautiful aromas of sliced apples, pears and pear blossom. Cookies. Honey. Straw. Full-bodied yet very sleek and polished. Extremely smooth and refined. Hints of cream and lightly toasted nuts and praline. Very, very long and persistent. Fantastic wine made with Burgundy’s famous winemaker, Roulot.

The 2020 Chardonnay Mainqué was made in partnership with the Burgundy winemaker Jean Marc Roulot with grapes from an old vineyard in Mainqué, Río Negro. Seventy-three percent of the wine was aged in mostly used French barrels, the rest in concrete tanks for 11 months. Yellow in the glass. The clear, expressive nose presents notes of acacia, hawthorn and honey with hints of pear and apple. Subtle aromas from the aging process enhance the complexity. Saline with expressive freshness, the flow is delicate while ginger notes develop at the back of the mouth. A rich, nuanced, vibrant wine.

The 2021 Mainqué Chardonnay is the second white here, produced by Jean-Marc Roulot from 40-year-old ungrafted vines in Mainqué in the Lunita property (where they regrafted the vines to Chardonnay), where they work with cover crops, no chemicals and bees. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, 70% in French oak barrels and 10% each in clay amphorae, concrete egg and stainless steel, and it matured for nine months, 70% in barrel and 10% each in concrete and stainless steel. It has the precision and purity of Roulot, which to a certain extent is the result of thorough work with the press. "He sent us the press program," Piero told me. "And we now have two presses. We are learning." When I thought about what was in common between the reds and the whites, I came up with three words: precision, purity and elegance. It has notes of white flowers and a touch of fennel and other aromatic herbs. It was harvested early in the morning and in the season, and the wine is light and refreshing, ethereal, weightless and with purity and precision. It's a delight! 24,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2021.

Such a flinty nose that delivers a full package of minerality. Quarry, chalk, gun powder and lime. The nose really speaks to you. Creamy and textured on the palate with bright but chiselled acidity and real tension. One of the best Mainque’s ever? Chacra’s answer to fine Chablis. Drink or hold. From biodynamically grown grapes.

(12.9% alcohol): Pale-medium red. Tangy, shy aromas of raspberry, strawberry, cherry, peppery spices, horseradish and underbrush. Juicy, delicate and nicely delineated but youthfully tight, with pepper and herb notes accenting tart red berry flavors. Relies more on its bright acidity than on its dusty tannins for structure. Subtle and understated pinot if a bit undernourished. Not at the same level as the riper, deeper 2011 bottling.

Extremely perfumed and beautiful with ripe strawberries and citrus fruit, as well as aromatic flowers. Full-bodied with plenty of fruit and creamy, chewy tannins that are polished and very impressive. Long and linear. One of the best of this bottling. Drink after 2023, but already a gorgeous bottle.

The élevage for the 2021 Cincuenta y Cinco was different from the past; they have now aged 40% in concrete tanks (it used to be 25%), 40% in French oak barrels and 20% in clay amphorae for nine months. They use cover crops in the vineyard, where they don't even use sulfur or copper. It fermented in a round and wide concrete vat with indigenous yeasts for 12 to 15 days with full clusters and an infusion with little extraction. It has moderate ripeness and 12% alcohol, with more tension than the others. This is basically the same wine as the Sin Azufre but with a little more oak, which is barely noticeable but with some spiciness and Burgundian character developing tantalizing notes of violet pastille with time in the glass. It has a bright ruby color and a complex and subtle nose full of elegance and nuance. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine tannins and supple flavors, primary, young and apparently weightless and ethereal but full of inner energy. It has bright flavors of fresh cherries and raspberries and a citrus twist of orange peel that adds freshness. Gobsmacking! 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021.

Deep, bright red-ruby, the darkest of this trio of pinot releases by far. Wild, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, meat, violet and leather. The palate similarly conveys a somewhat rustic game and leather quality, and does not appear to possess enough flesh and fruit to support its elevated acidity. Ultimately a bit hollow in the middle palate. Finishes with dusty, drying tannins and a slightly tart quality. Not quite squeaky-clean, with the fruit currently suppressed. (I tasted all of these wines twice, and each pair of bottles was similar.)
