Burghound (93)Once again there is a sufficient amount of reduction to warrant a thorough aeration. By contrast there is a lovely vibrancy and freshness in the mouth with plenty of sauvage character present on the velvety and caressing big-bodied and muscular flavors that coat the mouth thanks to the abundance of dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannins on the moderately austere, serious and hugely long finish. As good as this is though it's not clear at this very early juncture whether it will ultimately surpass the Bressandes. Still, both possess outstanding development potential and are of first-rate quality. |

Wine Advocate (96)The 2015 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is a magical wine in the making, opening in the glass with a deep and brooding bouquet of cherries, plum preserve, espresso roast, rich soil, dark chocolate and dried rose petals. On the palate, the wine is incredibly complete and multidimensional, with an ample chassis of fine-grained, chalky tannins, a bright line of acidity, and immense concentration and length. More deep and layered than the Corton Bressandes, this Clos du Roi is also finer-boned and more mineral, its aromas and flavors less wild and sauvage, and while the wine's considerable structure will demand a decade of bottle age, this will be a benchmark Corton in the fullness of time. |

Vinous (95)The 2018 Corton Clos-du-Roi Grand Cru was the standout when I assessed the 2018s out of barrel; now, in bottle, I have no reason to alter that view. Displaying spellbinding delineation and clarity on the nose, this articulates the terroir extremely well, offering precise red fruit mixed with crushed rock/flinty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, unerring purity and a silky texture that lingers long in the mouth. Feel that salinity tingling on the tongue after the wine has departed. Pure, unadulterated Pinoté! |

Vinous (93+)Medium red. Very ripe, fresh, nuanced nose melds red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and earth, plus a whiff of caramel. Rich, sappy and vibrant, with a firm mineral spine contributing to the impression of delicacy and inner-mouth energy. Dense but not at all weighty. Impeccably balanced wine, finishing with subtle persistence and a palate-saturating dusting of ripe, fine tannins. A rare Burgundy steal at this price. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (94)(80% vendange entier Bright, deep, saturated red. Sweet, nuanced aromas of redcurrant, cherry, chocolate and smoky minerality, lifted by a floral element. Sweet and creamy but juicy in the mouth; a rather muscular Corton, but with the breadth of the vintage in spades. Really spreads out to saturate the palate on the finish, with plenty of ripe tannins to see it through a decade or two of development. |

Vinous (94)Moderately saturated medium red. Initially smelled like a white wine, with its wild mint and citrus peel scents, then opened to reveal cherry, raspberry and red licorice. Densely packed and utterly seamless, with a restrained sweetness and excellent energy to the tactile, lightly saline middle palate. Conveys a strong impression of solidity without any excess weight. With its perfectly integrated acidity, this grand cru really stimulates the taste buds on the superb, rising finish. Should age a long time. |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2016 Corton Bressandes Grand Cru is also showing extremely well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, ripe plums, dark chocolate, dried flowers and spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a deep, layered core, succulent balancing acids and a long, intense and beautifully soil-driven finish. Cropped at 22 hectoliters per hectare, this is an exceptional Bressandes that will be well worth seeking out. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2017 Corton Bressandes Grand Cru is lovely, wafting from the glass with notes of dark fruits, nori, licorice, rich soil, blood orange, rose hip and dark chocolate. Long on complexity and character, this is a terrific Corton Bressandes. |

Vinous (90-92)(vinified with 30% whole clusters; this finished its malolactic fermentation in August): Bright, dark red. Aromas of cherry, flowers, spices and pepper are lifted by a pungent limestone topnote. Juicy, sappy and sweet; more evolved and showy today owing to the earlier malo. The building tannins are firm but elegant and not at all dry, with the finish delivering lovely length and grip. I like the influence of the stems here. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from mid-slope, east-facing vines on limestone-clay soils. This offers more clarity and delineation than the Les Vergelesses, with vivid red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite saline and a little spicier than the Vergelesses, with a longer tail on the finish. This is superb. Vinous (90-92)The 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru was more muted on the nose, dark berry fruit mingling with autumn leaves and earthy notes. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins on the entry. This has more substance than the preceding Savigny Les Lavières, and more grip, with subtle mushroom notes combining with red fruit on the finish. This should drink well over the next 10–12 years. |

The building tannins are firm but elegant and not at all dry, with the finish delivering lovely length and grip. I like the influence of the stems here. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is excellent, unfurling in the glass with notes of lime and lemon oil, crushed chalky, blanched almonds, dried white flowers and wet stones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with chewy extract, tangy acids and a long, chalky finish. It's a very promising rendition of a cuvée that flies somewhat under the radar. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru Blanc has a delightful nose of yellow flower and lemon peel that gently unfolds in the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, although I find it missing a little tension and edge toward the finish. Hopefully it will gain this during the remainder of its élevage. |

What you might call proper red Burgundy! |

Produced within the prestigious estate of Chandon de Briailles, the Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavieres 2005 exemplifies the exceptional Burgundy vintages. This superior drop is the fruition of age-old viticulture traditions, coupled with innovative biodynamic practices post-2005. Respecting the unique character of each climat, they harvested grapes from 1.8-hectare of chalky soil vineyards at Les Lavières, a premier cru in Savigny-les-Beaune. Treated in French oak for 18 months, this splendid Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend reveals a fine structure with elegant and pure red fruit hints. Its striking freshness and silky tannins make it a wine to age gracefully. Regarded as a shining example of a biodynamic producer, Chandon de Briailles ensures magnificent expressions of the Burgundian terroir in every creation, with the Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavieres 2005 being an extraordinary testament. Rich in heritage, this wine is an investment for the knowledgeable collector and a delight for the discerning palate. |

Vinous (92)The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru, already in bottle, has a vibrant, spicy, rose petal and violet bouquet that is even more intense than the Aux Fournaux. The chalk/limestone terroir really shows through here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It does not quite have the charm and crystalline quality of the Aux Fournaux, but is more masculine and structured, with a lovely marine element tincturing the dark berry fruit toward the chalky finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (91)The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru has retained the plumpness on the nose that I observed from barrel, offering lovely wild strawberry and raspberry aromas. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, crisp acidity and a slightly chalky finish. Maybe just missing a little persistence, yet this remains a fine Les Lavières. |
