Chasse Spleen

The name means to “Chase away the blues” and this engaging producer never fails to produce wine that does so. The history of the Chateau’s wine-production likely begins in the 1560s though the name possibly comes from a remark made by the poet Lord Byron applauding the wine’s restorative effect during a visit in 1821.

Chasse-Spleen 1996 (12x75cl)

Wine Spectator (90)

Chasse-Spleen did seriously well here. This impressive '96 is darkly colored, with mineral, berry and licorice aromas, a medium body, racy tannins and an interesting licorice, boysenberry and cherry aftertaste. Best after 2000. 25,000 cases made.

Chasse-Spleen 2003 (12x75cl)

Wine Enthusiast (91)

Always one of the star crus bourgeois, Chasse-Spleen has produced a 2003 that manages to combine the rich, ripe fruits of the year with the right tannins and sweetness, along with blackberry fruits. It has the elegance and delicacy of Moulis, as well as some good intensity of flavor. A wine that will certainly age for 10 years or more.

Chasse-Spleen 2011 (12x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (89)

Good deep red-ruby. Raspberry, licorice and an enticing floral quality on the nose. Lush, smooth and sweet, with lovely violet lift giving energy to the dark berry, sweet pipe tobacco and milk chocolate flavors. This broad, rather generous wine finishes with ripe tannins and very good length. (A second bottle was gamey and earthy; my projected range reflects the first sample I tried.)
