Chateau de la Nerthe is one of the oldest in Chateauneuf du Pape with records dating back to 1560. Purchased in 1986, a full renovation and replanting followed. Now one of the largest estates in the Southern Rhone, they organically farm all 13 approved grape varieties to create three reds and two whites.

    Wine Spectator (94)

Loaded with tropical and citrus flavors, this is a bit crisp, but shows some nice mineral character. Perhaps a bit tough on the finish and lacking fat, but more importantly, it's superintense and should be a great ager. Best from 2005 through 2010. 2,080 cases made. -PM

    Vinous (94)

Inky ruby. Exotic, opulent aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, licorice, incense and potpourri. Extremely rich but at the same time lithe and precise, offering sweet, deep raspberry, blueberry and candied floral flavors, plus strong mineral lift. Tannins gain strength on the finish, which leaves behind a wide swath of sweet dark fruits.

    Vinous (95)

Shimmering violet. Powerful, mineral- and spice-tinged boysenberry and cherry preserve scents are complemented by hints of vanilla and potpourri. Sappy and impressively concentrated, offering energetic red/blue fruit liqueur, spicecake, cola and candied lavender flavors sharpened by a jolt of smoky minerality. Lush yet lively as well, with a strikingly long, spice-driven finish that features chewy, steadily building tannins.
