    Chateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena is one of Napa Valley’s oldest estates, starting in 1882. The prohibition stalled work at this French style property and wasn’t restarted until 1972 when Jim Barret took over. The excellent Michael Grich was winemaker before starting his own estate. Now made by Jim’s son Bo, their Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay made them one of Nappa’s most respected. The estate also boasts a Jade Lake, a stunning wildlife sanctuary.

Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate 1991 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

What a thrill it is to drink Montelena’s 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that takes hold of all the sense and never lets up. Imposing and intense, the 1991 is simply riveting. The flavors are dark, intense and savory, but it is the wine’s silkiness that stands out above all else. Well-stored bottles will continue to drink beautifully for another decade-plus. 97

    2007

Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate 2007 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Bright ruby-red. Slightly jammy aromas of blackberry, cassis and cherry complemented by spice and cedar nuances. Wonderfully sweet and mouthfilling but not a bit weighty, with its dark berry, spice and tobacco flavors firmed by medicinal menthol and mint notes. This suave, fine-grained beauty can be enjoyed now owing to its superb balance but it also has the penetration and cut to go on for another 20 years. Winemaker Matt Crafton describes 2007 as a Goldilocks vintage, with long, slow ripening, no weather extremes and full flavor development. Finishes very long, with wonderfully suave tannins and no shortage of structure. (14.3% alcohol)
