    Vinous (93+)

(bottled in April of this year, a month or two later than the other 2014 white wines at this address): The nose offers perfumed scents of lavender and white pepper complemented by sweet oak. Then sappy, spicy and brisk on the palate, but with a silky texture to its intense lemon, mineral and spice flavors. At once serious and wonderfully fine-grained, like a young Chevalier-Montrachet should be. The palate-saturating finish features saline soil tones and excellent mineral lift. Incidentally, this wine is made at the Domaine de Montille cellar in Meursault.

    Vinous (88-90)

(80% of this wine is declassified Chalumeaux, according to Brian Sieve, who noted that winemaker Jacques Montagnon is aging one-third of this cuvée in 228-liter barrels because of the wine's reductive tendency): Bright yellow. Ripe, buttery aromas of yellow peach and musky white flowers. Leaner than the village Chassagne, but enlivened by sappy lemony acidity. A bit longer on the aftertaste. From a slightly lower crop level than the Chassagne, according to Sieve.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes 75% from Chalumaux that was declassified in the late Seventies (there is a great story about why that happened, but I’ll leave it for another time). It has a delightful bouquet of green apple, white flowers and orange zest that bursts from the glass. The palate is well balanced with a saline entry, good weight and a discreet touch of spice toward a finish of fine length. A quality village cru that will probably end up at the top of my banded score.

This exceptional vintage is produced by Domaine de Montille, a renowned wine estate noted for their sustainable viticulture practices and uncompromising quality. Harvested by hand, the Chardonnay grapes used exude an intimate connection to the terroir. The wine ages for 16 months in French oak, creating a striking balance of taut minerality, leaned fruit, and an oak-derived complexity. It delivers a lively citrus profile with refined hints of apple, white flowers, and a touch of vanilla on a buttery texture, with an impressively long, mineral finish. Whether experienced now, or allowed to develop gracefully over the next decade, the Domaine de Montille Bourgogne Blanc Clos du Chateau 2017 offers a touch of brilliance in every sip. Vinous (87)

Gold-tinged yellow. Rather exaggerated aromas of hazelnut and almond. Fat yellow fruit flavors are supported by decent acidity but could use more definition. Finishes a bit dry-edged, with hints of nutmeats and oatmeal. Not a great showing, and likely to evolve quickly. (Incidentally, I found the Bourgogne Blanc Le Clos du Château de Puligny-Montrachet a bit too tropical and liqueur-like, with its nutty oak element amplifying its hint of oxidation.)

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Village comes from two parcels next to the Puligny border. Vinified in 600-liter barrels, it has a well defined, pretty bouquet of Granny Smith apples, lime and touches of petrichor. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, good weight on the midpalate and satisfying salinity on the finish. Recommended.

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Village comes from two climats populated with 45-plus-year-old vines that are close to Puligny, which explains the green apple and wet limestone aromatics. The palate is crisp and taut, very linear and focused. A twist of sour lemon toward the malic finish extends the length. Good energy here.

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has a light apple blossom bouquet that opens teasingly over four or five minutes...but I still want more. The palate is nicely balanced with a dab of ginger on the entry, opening with aeration and has a fine saline finish. This should drink well for several years.
