Clos Fourtet

About Clos Fourtet

Previously known as Camfourtet, Clos Fourtet was used as a fort in Saint- Émilion during the middle ages. At one point in the late 18th century, it shared the same owner as Château Figeac. The estate was formally named Clos Fourtet in 1868 under the Rulleau family, who was also responsible for building the château. Up till  2001, Clos Fourtet came under various owners including the Ginestet and Lurton families, legendary names associated with top Bordeaux estates such as Château Margaux and Cheval Blanc respectively. The Cuvelier family acquired Clos Fourtet in 2001 and placed Matthieu Cuvelier in charge. The 20-odd hectare vineyard of Clos Fourtet is planted to approximately 83% Merlot with the rest made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Vines are regularly replanted to maintain an average vine age of 35 years. Practitioners of organic and biodynamic farming, Clos Fourtet continues to produce stellar wines of power and elegance.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Clos Fourtet is a little closed to begin, opening out to reveal notes of baked black cherries, blueberry preserves and dried mulberries plus hints of cast-iron pan, fertile loam and cigar box with a waft of sandalwood. Full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and compelling freshness supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long and mineral laced. Very impressive!

This is another brilliant offering from Philippe Cuvelier, who has totally revolutionized the quality of this famous estate. The 2011 Clos Fourtet exhibits a dense blue/purple color as well as beautiful notes of creme de cassis, blueberries and raspberries, a complete as well as layered mid-palate, sweet tannin, good acidity and a charming personality. Clos Fourtet 2012 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

Having just had the 2003 and 2005 from my cellar, I can attest to the magnificent turnaround in quality this famous estate on the eastern side of St.-Emilion has achieved. All of it is attributable to its dynamic proprietor, Philippe Cuvelier. The 2012 Clos Fourtet (usually 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) has beautiful blackberry and blueberry fruit and an inky purple color. With flawless integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning richness, this is impressive and certainly one of the vintage's top wines. It should evolve beautifully for 15-20 years, and be drinkable in 3-4. Yields were a modest 32 hectoliters per hectare with the alcohol at 14%.

Clos Fourtet 2014 (12x75cl)

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (97)

A stunning, breathtaking wine, the 2014 Clos Fourtet is without question one of the stars of the vintage. Deep yet also wonderfully nuanced, it exudes energy and transparency. Enticing scents of violet, lavender, mint and chalk add to the wine's chiseled personality. The 2014 has gained considerable depth, volume and intensity since I tasted it from barrel as a young wine, but without losing its intensely mineral, understated personality. Today, it is exceptionally beautiful in every way. The blend is 89 % Merlot, 7 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 % Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times.

Clos Fourtet 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (95-97)

Located on the upper limestone plateau and 90% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Clos Fourtet gives up a bright purple color to go with loads of black raspberry and chocolate-covered cherry fruits as well as plenty of tobacco, damp earth, and truffly aromas and flavors. It shows the vintage's purity, elegance, and sunny, sexy character to a T. It will be a brilliant Saint-Emilion that will be drinkable with just a handful of years in the cellar and evolve for 20-25 years or more.

Clos Fourtet 2020 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (97-99)

One of the biggest successes on the upper plateau is the 2020 Château Clos Fourtet, and it does everything right in the vintage. A magical, perfumed bouquet of red plums, black cherries, white truffle, and white flowers just screams Saint-Emilion, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, flawless overall balance, a dense mid-palate, and a liqueur of rocks-like minerality on the palate. Building incrementally with time in the glass, this is thrilling stuff that should offer some up-front appeal in its youth yet benefit from 7-8 years in the cellar and keep for 30 years or more. Bravo! The blend is 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc that’s still resting in 50% new French oak.
