Clos Saint Jean

Clos Saint Jean was founded at the turn of the 20th century by Edmund Tacussel but spent the majority of the next 100 years in relative obscurity. From 2003 however, their arrival on the world stage was dramatic and brilliant. Ever since then they have been in the top flight of Chateauneuf-du-Pape producers producing one glorious vintage after another. They make wines in a hedonistic, unapologetically classic Chateauneuf style and their devotion to tradition is what has earned them countless admirers around the world.

Moving to the reds and 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvèdre, the base 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a beauty and boasts appealing notes of spiced red and black fruits, cedar, and garrigue. Full-bodied, ripe and undeniably sexy, it’s going to benefit from a year or three in the cellar and drink nicely for over a decade.

Wine Advocate (98)

The 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus ex Machina is a stunner in the vintage. Like the Combe des Fous, it has incredible elegance, as well as the forward, sexy nature of the vintage. Kirsch liqueur, currants, toast, sandalwood, and graphite are just some of the nuances here. The wine hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel and beautifully polished tannin on the finish. Give it another year or two and drink it through 2026.

Jeb Dunnuck (98+)

Always the biggest, baddest effort in the lineup, the 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus Ex Machina is the normal split of 60% old vine Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre brought up in demi-muids. Deep, full-bodied, masculine, and concentrated, it has more structure than most in the vintage as well as awesome aromas and flavors of cured meats, black licorice, and chalky minerality, as well as loads of peppery dark fruits. Drink this gorgeous effort anytime over the coming 15-20 years.

A blend of 60% Grenache aged in concrete and 40% Mourvèdre aged in new barriques, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina is a modern-day monster. This is rich and powerfully concentrated, loaded with scents of vanilla and baking spices, yet it also possesses masses of red fruit (raspberries, cherries and plums), a wonderfully creamy and intense mid-palate and a long finish. It completely hides its no-doubt considerable alcohol.

Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Deus Ex Machina 2016 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (100)

More cured meats, spice, loamy soil notes, and an incredible core of kirsch and currant fruits emerge from the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus Ex Machina. Deep, incredibly concentrated, multi-dimensional and long, it reminds me of the 2007 at this same point in time. This cuvée is always a 60/40 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre, brought up in tank and new demi-muids, and in top vintages, needs 2-5 years of bottle age to really shine, yet I always also fine a certain accessibility given its balance and purity. It’s capable of lasting for two decades.

Wine Advocate (92)

This bottle of the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape la Combe des Fous seemed to be in a weird place. While it still has great color, the flavors have advanced into a savory combination of roasted meat and mushrooms. It's full-bodied and plush, with caramel overtones that linger on the finish. Contrasting this performance with the Deus Ex Machina tasted immediately afterward makes me wonder if this was a good bottle.

Wine Advocate (99)

Also up with the top wines of the vintage, the 2010 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Combe des Fous shows the darker fruit and minerality of the vintage with its creme de cassis, blackberry, ground pepper, licorice and ample crushed rock-like minerality. Gaining more than one expletive in the notes, this full-bodied 2010 has thrilling purity of fruit, massive underlying structure and a rich, layered and decadent feel on the finish. As with most 2010s, it needs another 3 to 4 years of bottle age and will easily have two decades of overall longevity.

The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape la Combe des Fous is another gorgeous wine from this estate that offers incredible richness while never seeming heavy, cumbersome or over-the-top. A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the rest Muscardin, Vaccarese and Cinsault, it exhibits thrilling cassis, black raspberry, chocolate, crushed flowers and exotic spice. Full-bodied, seamless and incredibly elegant, it has the polish and balance to drink nicely now, but will evolve for 15 years or more.

Wine Advocate (93)

A healthy 25% of this cuvée is Syrah aged in new oak, which impacts the aromas and flavors of the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous in a substantial way. Baking spices and vanilla are apparent, but there are plenty of bold red-fruit flavors to balance them out. The one wobble is that the alcohol (a whopping 16%) shows through a bit on the finish. I'd opt for drinking this plush, voluptuous wine over the near term.

Deep ruby-colored and offering a heavenly bouquet of black raspberries, toasted spiced, cured meats, licorice, and cured meats, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Combes des Fous is awesome on the palate, with a silky, seamless profile that just keeps on going. Possessing ultra-fine tannin, no hard edges, and a huge finish, it’s a phenomenal bottle of wine. The fact that it was bottled just one month ago makes this showing even more impressive.

Wine Advocate (97)

The pure Grenache 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum was matured in a combination of clay amphorae and new demi-muids. It's an enormous yet fruit-driven wine, endowed with masses of raspberries and stone fruit yet featuring complexity in the form of dried spices, like cinnamon, clove and allspice. Creamy and intense, it's a roller coaster ride of exuberance, yet it's ultimately elegant as it glides into a nearly never-ending finish. The only thing that kept me from going higher was the slight bit of warmth on the finish, which I think limits the wine's aging potential.

Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Combe Des Fous 2009 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92)

This bottle of the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape la Combe des Fous seemed to be in a weird place. While it still has great color, the flavors have advanced into a savory combination of roasted meat and mushrooms. It's full-bodied and plush, with caramel overtones that linger on the finish. Contrasting this performance with the Deus Ex Machina tasted immediately afterward makes me wonder if this was a good bottle.

Wine Advocate (100)

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum is the most classic in style, yet is still over-the-top and decadent in every way. Giving up heavenly aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, black raspberry, ground spice, sweet licorice and roasted herbs, it has a massive, voluptuous, layered and insanely pure feel on the palate. If you’re a Grenache lover, it doesn’t get any better.
