Comte de Vogue

One of Burgundy's most famous names, the current owner is the family's 20th generation to own the domaine. Their philosophy is to constantly adapt to the vineyard and vintage conditions. The high level of limestone in the soil helps them to produce wines with body and finesse.

Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 1995 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91-94)

Medium-to-dark ruby colored, the spectacularly aromatic Bonnes Mares explodes out of the glass with spiced apples, dark cherries and cola scents. Chewy, powerful, polished and intensely structured, this full-bodied wine is packed with wild berries, plums and red fruits. Drink 2003-2012+. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided.

Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2017 (3x75cl)

Burghound (91-94)

A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm but the 2017 version appears to be a bit less structured than it usually is.

Vinous (96-98)

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a limpid deep purple. It has a heavenly bouquet distantly related to the Les Amoureuses, offering precocious but detailed blueberry, black cherry, crushed iris petal and crushed limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy, marine-influenced opening, a tang of shucked oyster shells infusing the black and blueberry fruit, leading to a detailed, tensile, lightly spiced finish. A long tail of white pepper lingers on the aftertaste. This is absolutely divine.

(from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the far southern portion of the vineyard). A riper and more restrained nose requires some swirling to reveal its aromas of plum liqueur, blue berry, earth and a more restricted range of spice elements. The bigger and richer flavors possess an opulent richness and a velvety texture that coats the palate and enrobes the firmer tannic spine shaping the powerful, tautly muscular and strikingly persistent finale. This offers a completely different expression compared to the Amoureuses but one that is equally interesting. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. Very good deep color. Deeper, more vinous, musky aroma of sweet dark berries and roasted coffee. Dense, ripe and delineated, with a stony precision. Doesn't offer quite the thrust of the Musigny, but has terrific cut and is still holding much in reserve. The tannins are finer than those of the village wine.

The palate is beautifully balanced with saturated tannin and a fine thread of acidity. Full of energy that flows through the sorbet-fresh finish, and silky-smooth in texture. This oft-overlooked cuvée comes highly recommended. Superb.

Saturated ruby-black in hue, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village offers up aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, licorice, rose petal and expresso roast, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and dense, with surprising reserves of fine-grained extract, succulent acids and an expansive finish. It's unusually rich and concentrated in the context of the vintage.

Wine Advocate (97-99)

The extraordinary 2002 Musigny Vieilles Vignes will most likely not have as much cellaring potential as the great 1949, 1959, or 1990, yet qualitatively is in the same league as those jewels from the past. It sports a profound nose of red cherries, spices, candied raspberries, and hints of oak. This noble, concentrated, refined wine reveals loads of flowers intermingled with red as well as black fruits in its complex personality. Unlike the bold, chewy, hyper-concentrated 1990, this is a feminine wine, a work of art with exquisite tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.

Vinous (93-96)

Good deep red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, strawberry, minerals, crushed stone and flowers, complicated by subtle notes of lichee and mango. A stony, chalky wine with terrific sappy precision and energy. Here the slightly exotic candied quality simply adds another aromatic dimension in the mouth, rather than suggesting any overripe character. This very firmly structured and vibrant wine finishes with exhilarating palate-dusting lift and explosive perfume. This is close to 13% alcohol without chaptalization, according to Millet.

Wine Advocate (98)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Musigny Vielles Vignes Grand Cru from de Vogüé has slightly brighter and more vivacious fruit than J-F Mugnier, and in fact, the two wines seem to go in two different trajectories in the glass, this blossoming and the other becoming more occluded. De Vogüé's Musigny is unashamedly floral in style, very elegant and yet delineated. There is a noticeable estuary scents, mudflats and seaweed, that begin to permeate the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, wonderful acidity and succinctly integrated new oak that is barely tangible. It is intense but elegant, long and tender in the mouth. It is a fabulous Musigny, one of the best that the domaine has produced in recent years.

The 2013 Musigny Vieilles Vignes is more immediate on the nose than the Bonnes-Mares, probably the first time I have observed this since I began tasting them side by side at the domaine. Here we have a smorgasbord of brambly red berry fruit intermixed with damp moss, fennel and broom. The palate is controlled from start to finish: filigree tannins, supreme focus and harmony with a gradual build toward the raspberry and wild strawberry finish that is laden with minerals. There is a sense of natural balance here, a Musigny with character and enigma.

The tighter and much more mineral-driven big-bodied flavors also possess evident muscle on the powerful and dense yet beautifully refined finish that goes on and on. This is also a bit less structured though with that said, this is going to need at least 15 years to reach its apogee. In a word, terrific.

The 2018 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is even darker than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a spectacular bouquet of intense black fruit, blueberries and shucked oyster shells, the mineralité heightened over the Bonnes-Mares and lending a great deal of precision. The palate is medium-bodied with blueberry, boysenberry and black currant fruit, extraordinary tension, razor-sharp acidity and a dash of white pepper on the crystalline finish. One of the finest Musignys I have tasted from barrel at de Vogüé.

Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny 2017 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (89-91)

Saturated ruby-black in hue, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village offers up aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, licorice, rose petal and expresso roast, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and dense, with surprising reserves of fine-grained extract, succulent acids and an expansive finish. It's unusually rich and concentrated in the context of the vintage.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (95)

Full red-ruby. Dense, laid-back nose hints at cherry, raspberry, powdered stone, mint and flowers. Wonderfully sweet on entry, then supple and subtle in the middle, with excellent density. Finishes very long, with fairly strong but fine tannins and some noticeable oak.

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2013 Musigny Vieilles Vignes is more immediate on the nose than the Bonnes-Mares, probably the first time I have observed this since I began tasting them side by side at the domaine. Here we have a smorgasbord of brambly red berry fruit intermixed with damp moss, fennel and broom. The palate is controlled from start to finish: filigree tannins, supreme focus and harmony with a gradual build toward the raspberry and wild strawberry finish that is laden with minerals. There is a sense of natural balance here, a Musigny with character and enigma.

Burghound (93-96)

An openly exotic nose offers glimpses of black cherry liqueur, ginger, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and orange peel. The tighter and much more mineral-driven big-bodied flavors also possess evident muscle on the powerful and dense yet beautifully refined finish that goes on and on. This is also a bit less structured though with that said, this is going to need at least 15 years to reach its apogee. In a word, terrific.

Vinous (97-99)

The 2018 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is even darker than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a spectacular bouquet of intense black fruit, blueberries and shucked oyster shells, the mineralité heightened over the Bonnes-Mares and lending a great deal of precision. The palate is medium-bodied with blueberry, boysenberry and black currant fruit, extraordinary tension, razor-sharp acidity and a dash of white pepper on the crystalline finish. One of the finest Musignys I have tasted from barrel at de Vogüé.
