Conti Costanti
About Conti Costanti
The Costanti family has owned this 10 hectare estate for more than 200 years. The current proprietor, Andrea Costanti, has ushered in a new age of unparalleled excellence at the property through hard graft and savvy upgrades to the cellar and vineyard management. Now at the very zenith of Montalcino, Conti Costanti is consistently rivalling its most illustrious neighbour, Biondi Santi.
Located in the cooler North-Eastern area of Montalcino, Conti Costanti has historically found ripeness difficult to achieve at the lofty 380 and 450 meter altitude at which their vines sit. When Andrea originally began working in the vineyards in the early eighties, this was seemingly an inevitability with which the estate was forced to live. Today, however, with an increasing number of regions expressing concern regarding the advance of Global Warming, increased temperatures in the region are balanced by the cold currents that blow through the hillside vineyards of Conti Costanti at night. One man's loss is another's gain, and this tension between warm and cool is allowing the Constanti family to produce incredibly perfumed, ripe and concentrated fruit which becomes breathtaking wine.

Smooth, dense and juicy, with flavors similar to the aromas but complicated by notes of fresh herbs, sweet spices and hints of flint. Decanter (98)After sitting out the 2014 vintage, Andrea Costanti calls 2015 a beautiful year and one of the best in the history of Brunello. He deemed it exceptional enough to craft a Riserva (to be released in 2021) yet his classic Brunello hasn't suffered for it. In fact, it's one of the greatest successes of the vintage. Gorgeous, seductive aromas are already expressive but still youthful. Cherry and plum are enveloped by exotic spice and a faint smokiness. The palate is plush and velvety with layers of powdery tannins that build, and tangy acid that cleanses the palate. Hedonistic but brilliantly balanced, it is hard to resist now but the best is definitely yet to come. |

Vinous (94+)The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, licorice and spices all wrapped around a sensual, elegant frame of notable class. Considerable aeration is needed to bring out the wine's depth and textural richness. This is an excellent wine, but more often than not I am attracted more to the straight Brunello here, as is the case again in 2006. Costanti gave the 2006 Riserva 36 months in oak, 18 months in medium-sized barrels followed by 18 months in cask. |

Vinous (92)The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is very pretty, showing musky, bright cherry, dried roses and savory spice. There’s remarkable purity here, with soft textures giving way to tart wild berry fruit complemented by zesty acids. It’s dry and lightly structured throughout the finale with lasting inner florals and a twang of sour citrus. This is far from your typical Rosso. The Costanti Rosso is a barrel selection that matures for one year in a combination of 60% tonneaux and 40% new 35-40 hectoliter barrels. |

Vinous (94)The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Vermiglio is a bombshell beauty, with a bright bouquet of dried strawberries, crushed rose petals, shaved cedar, cinnamon spice and sweet smoke. It’s deeply textural, almost fleshy in feel, yet kept in line by vibrant acidity, as masses of black cherry and raspberry fruit envelope the palate. This totally harmonious Rosso finishes with a classic tug of fine tannins, along with nuances of sour citrus, inner earth and lavender tones. It embodies, without a doubt, the term “Baby Brunello.” The Vermiglio hasn’t been produced since 2013, it’s a barrel selection of Rosso that Costanti matures for two years, instead of one, in cask. Only 4,000 bottles were produced. |
