La Pousse d'Or

Domaine de la Pousse d’Or has an imposing property near Volnay, in the Cote de Beaune. They also have vines in Pommard and Santenay. Since its foundation in 1964 it has been a pioneering estate. In 1997 it was acquired by Patrick Landanger who invested heavily in this spirit, getting the best of his terroir.

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2008 (12x75cl)

Burghound (91-94)

A more reserved yet even more complex aromatic profile offers a broad spectrum of fruit types along with game, warm earth, underbrush, smoke and wet stone, all of which add depth to the intensely soil-driven big-bodied, powerful and serious flavors blessed with excellent amounts of dry extract that completely buffer the very firm tannic spine on the lingering finish. As good as the Bressandes is, and it is indeed very good, there simply appears to be a supplemental dimension present here.

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2009 Corton Clos du Roi reveals superb aromatic complexity and delineation, with expressive floral scents that are woven into the fruit. This is intense and powerful, but also marvelously elegant. It is a wine for those who can afford to be patient. The higher altitude of this site helped preserve a measure of freshness, which was quite welcome in 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2029-2049.

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (90-93)

Bright ruby-red. Wild aromas of blackberry, chocolate and meat are considerably less expressive today than those of the Bressandes. Broad and large-scaled but backward, showing darker fruit flavors than the Bressandes. Finishes with big, horizontal tannins and excellent length. This should equal the Bressandes but will need a good five or six years in the cellar.

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or Monopole 2011 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92)

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is quite a lot of reduction on the nose of the Volnay Clos de la Bousse d'Or, but underneath is some quite decent redcurrant and fresh strawberry fruit that gradually unfurls in the glass. There is still some oak here to be resolved, but there is sufficient substance here to suggest that patience is all that is needed. The palate is medium-bodied and fleshy on the opening. This is soft and caressing in the mouth with quite a sensual and well-balanced finish that neatly carries the oak. This is well crafted but will improve with another 18-24 months in bottle.

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrees 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées has an elegant bouquet with perfumed, violet-tinged black and red fruit, well defined with touches of brown spice and iris emerging with time. This shows a pleasing restraint. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit on the entry, well-judged acidity, then toughening up a little toward a structured and almost Pommard-like finish that suggests that it will need several years in bottle.

Pousse d'Or Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 2014 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny les Charmes 1er Cru has one of the most exotic bouquets from La Pousse d'Or: macerated red cherries, orange peel and dried fig, nicely defined and just a little heady! The palate is succulent on the entry with supple, fine tannin. Here, there is a mixture of red and black fruit, whereas other cuvées lean towards the latter. It feels more harmonious in the mouth, perhaps more approachable with a persuasive, silky texture on the finish. This is very well crafted.

Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes has one of the better aromatics out of the three Chambolle premier crus that I tasted from the domaine—this one is much more refined and elegant, showing more joie de vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannin, well-judged acidity and a tang of orange rind and spice that enliven the finish. This is worth seeking out.

Pousse d'Or Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny les Feusselottes 1er Cru, from vines planted between 1920 and 1966, has a stony, slightly austere bouquet that demands some rigorous aeration before it opens up and deigns the imbiber with more fruit. The palate is crisp on the entry with fine tannin, crisp black cherry and blackberry notes augmented by a vein of crème de cassis, gentle and focused towards the finish without that peacock's tail of a more benevolent vintage. Drink over the next decade, possibly more.

Pousse d'Or Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91)

The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing just a tiny reduction on the nose, but there is clearly plenty of black fruit tucked underneath, later touches of kirsch, violet and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and well-judged acidity. It tightens up towards the structured, more Clos Saint-Denis-inspired finish, yet the length and persistence in the mouth is impressive. I would just like more nervosité to come through and perhaps even a touch more charm. Otherwise this is a commendable Clos de la Roche that should offer a couple decades of drinking pleasure.

This is also sufficiently reduced that it's not possible to offer an assessment of the nose. The richer and more imposingly scaled flavors possess excellent mid-palate density along with plenty of extract that imparts a caressing mouth feel to the opulent finish that is firm but not rustic while delivering sneaky good length on the well-balanced finale. This should be quite good in time.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (91-93)

Bright dark ruby, deeper in color than the amphora version. Totally different on the nose, where one is immediately aware of a bitter chocolate note from the oak. Then sweeter and more pliant in the mouth, with flavors of black cherry, violet and licorice. More complex and long on the aftertaste, offering an intriguing suggestion of wildness. The tannins here are serious, even a bit youthfully aggressive, and yet this sample makes the amphora version seem a bit frozen in its youth.
