    Comtes Lafon

Domaine des Comtes Lafon began in 1869 with vines in some of the best plots in Mersualt, Volnay and Le Montrachet. This family estate has been run by Dominique Lafon since 1985. He ended share cropping, key to their surging quality, with some of the best white and great red wine. Their cellars are the deepest in Burgundy.

The 2020 Meursault Clos-de-la-Barre has a clean, quite precise bouquet that is a step up from the Village, traces of grilled almond and hazelnut. The palate is underpinned by a fine line of acidity, more mineralité and tension with a saline, slightly Puligny-like finish. One of those less-is-more Meursaults. Bottled under Diam 30. The 2017 Monthélie Les Duresses was in barrel until October and then racked into tank as Lafon felt it was ready. It has a delightful bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, plus a little sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, but delivers pretty, earthy fruit and a light-hearted finish full of joie-de-vivre.

The 2018 Monthélie Les Duresses has a tightly wound bouquet, the fruit a little darker than I find on the nascent 2019, yet still well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, quite compact and saline. A touch of black pepper enlivens the slightly broody finish. Cellar this for 2–3 years.

Exotic aromas of pineapple, orange zest, iodine and menthol. Then wonderfully fat and nectar-like, with rare depth of fruit for the vintage. Boasts great richness without any heaviness. Really expands in the mouth and goes on and on on the very long, dry finish. Among the strongest 2004 samples I tasted on my most recent trip.

The 2010 Montrachet Grand Cru is a spectacular wine that fulfills all its potential. The bouquet rivets you to the spot with yellow flowers, hints of honeysuckle and petrichor, with aeration becoming a little petrol-like. The palate is brimming over with nervous energy. There is incredible depth, real thrust to this Montrachet that just lacquers the senses, yet it is only just beginning to demonstrate what it can do. Wow. Bravo Mon. Lafon. Tasted at Noble Rot's Xmas dinner.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine des Comtes Lafon has a clean and fresh bouquet, perhaps just a bit too much lime for my liking, although there is mineralité tucked in just behind. The palate is fresh and saline on the entry with a superb line of acidity. There is weight and presence to this Montrachet, and it gains weight and delivers a knockout, extremely persistent finish tinged with lemon thyme and sherbet. Though a little disjointed at present, I suspect this will turn into a wonderful Montrachet with style and class. But be warned that it will require several years in bottle.

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru is a classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of lemon oil, citrus blossom, green apple, mandarin and beeswax, subtly framed by new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, beautifully complete and multidimensional, with a broad, satiny attack, a deep, layered mid-palate and a pure, penetrating finish. Youthfully reserved today, its almost understated elegance conceals impressive reserved of structure and extract.

The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is a little richer and more opulent than the Clos des Chênes, ravishing dark black cherries, cassis and light violet scents burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, the oak a little more pronounced at the moment, therefore I would afford this bold Volnay 4-6 years in bottle if you can wait. Bottled under Diam 30. (just 2-1/2 barrels produced, or 15 hectoliters per hectare): Bright dark red. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, violet and dark chocolate. Richer and rounder than the Monthélie-Les Duresses, with more power and framing acidity to its slightly medicinal black cherry fruit. At once thick and elegant, this highly concentrated, long wine finishes with very classy tannins.

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which was bottled earlier than the Champans, has an intense nose of black cherries, blueberry, seaweed and iodine. The palate continues that theme: saline on the entry, dense and grippy, and very nicely focused with a lively, lightly spiced finish. Real succulence here, and very good persistence; the elegance is only apparent after the wine is slipping down the throat.

It has a charming, well-defined and very pure bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with crushed stone. The palate is silky-smooth right from the start, very cohesive and displaying a fine bead of acidity; it actually reminds me of Michel Lafarge in style. This will be utterly seductive.

Good bright medium red. The most complex and complete of these 2011s on the nose, offering scents of black cherry, menthol, wild herbs and sexy underbrush; sappy and ripe but with noteworthy medicinal reserve. Silky on entry, then thick, bright and highly concentrated, with the violet and licorice lift and firm spine of acidity of a top Cote de Nuits wine. Lovely focus and dark fruit intensity here. Finishes bright and long, with serious but fine-grained tannins. This should age beautifully.

Medium red. Wonderfully deep aromas of kirsch, blackberry, dark chocolate, licorice and minerals are lifted by a floral quality. Concentrated, saline and suave, delivering a terrific core of dark cherry, menthol and spices. A strong spine of refined tannins makes its presence felt late, allowing this lively wine to stretch out impressively on the spicy aftertaste. A classic vintage for this bottling.

Tasted blind, the 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu offers up a deep bouquet of red-black cherries, spices, potpourri, espresso roast and subtle grilled meat. Full-bodied, ample and sappy on the palate, it's rich but vibrant, with fine-grained structuring tannins that are beginning to assert themselves on the finish. Having drunk several bottles of this wine since release, the extent to which it's shutting down is clearly apparent, and at this stage, patience will be required.

The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle.

The 2019 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru, matured in a little more new oak than the Clos des Chênes (around one-third, according to Lafon), offers a quintessential Santenots nose of almost brazen blueberry and cassis aromas mixed with raspberry and violets. The palate is rounded on the entry and exerts a gentle grip. Opulent but controlled, though this year I find more nuance and sensuality on the Champans, which would be my pick of Lafon’s reds.

It has a very pretty bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry scents, just a touch of undergrowth developing with time. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin and fine acidity. (Lafon bought seven hectares of east-facing vines on clay-rich soil in Viré in 2009, including some that date back to the 1930s; the youngest vines here are at least 30 years of age): Bright lemon-yellow. Intriguing aromas of pear, white peach, flowers, minerals, menthol and white pepper. Pliant and thick but very juicy and fresh; lovely lemony cut (4.4 acidity) gives a light touch to the fruit. Shows strong spine and structure without especially high acidity. Lovely fine-grained wine with class. This vineyard needed a lot of work, noted Gon. And we need to pick early to capture the floral aromas of Viré.

The 2016 Viré-Clessé wafts from the glass with notes of musky peach and dried white flowers, framed by sublet reduction. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, tense and racy, with good depth at the core and an attractive sense of completeness. It will need some time in the cellar to unwind after bottling, but it's an elegant, vibrant interpretation of the appellation that ranks as one of Lafon's best cuvées this year.

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)

The 2018 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has the most intense bouquet of Dominique Lafon’s Volnays this year, intense black cherry scents intermingling with boysenberry and light cassis aromas, all delivered with the utmost detail. The palate offers black cherry and raspberry fruit infused with violets, very fine tannins and gentle grip. The silky-smooth finish fans out gloriously. Stunning.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru, matured in a little more new oak than the Clos des Chênes (around one-third, according to Lafon), offers a quintessential Santenots nose of almost brazen blueberry and cassis aromas mixed with raspberry and violets. The palate is rounded on the entry and exerts a gentle grip. Opulent but controlled, though this year I find more nuance and sensuality on the Champans, which would be my pick of Lafon’s reds.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru is very well defined on the nose with blackberry, boysenberry, crushed violets and light incense aromas, opulent yet controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with some oak to be subsumed on the entry, modest depth, sleek and sensual with a spicer finish than the Champans. Likewise, it will require 4-6 years in bottle before it is at full flight. Bottled under Diam 30. Closure: Diam 30

The 2017 Volnay Village includes some declassified Santenots and Champans fruit. It has a very pretty bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry scents, just a touch of undergrowth developing with time. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin and fine acidity. Elegant and suave, with a fleshy, persistent finish that is perhaps not quite as compelling as the 2018, but has wonderful sheer drinkability.

The 2021 Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine Clos du Four was one of the last cuvées bottled just before harvest. It has a focused and quite stony bouquet with green apple and light peach skin notes. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, harmonious for sure, though just missing a little race and nerve on the finish. Still, it should give a decade of drinking pleasure.

The 2018 Saint-Véran is a blend of vineyards that expanded with the acquisition of additional vines in 2016. It has a crisp, stony, surprisingly reserved bouquet with touches of gravel and flint. The very well-balanced palate offers a slightly oily/resinous texture, good definition and a long finish. Superb.
