    Comtes Lafon

Domaine des Comtes Lafon began in 1869 with vines in some of the best plots in Mersualt, Volnay and Le Montrachet. This family estate has been run by Dominique Lafon since 1985. He ended share cropping, key to their surging quality, with some of the best white and great red wine. Their cellars are the deepest in Burgundy.

Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

From barrel, I preferred Lafon's 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes to his Perrières, and that preference manifested itself a year and a half later under blind conditions. Wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp peach, yellow orchard fruit, nutmeg and honey, it's a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine with terrific depth and concentration but rendered in a satiny, elegant style. Pure, precise and beautifully delineated, it was bottled under Diam 30.

Unreal. This gorgeous, refined, seductive, full-bodied white Burgundy is packed with sensational, smooth texture. Soft as silk and loaded to the rafters with deliciously ripe fruit, surrounded by the sort of vanilla-infused, toasty, smoky oak accents that taste sweet. The balance is astounding. Perfumed aromas of hazelnut, lime and spice. Rich but racy and stylish; youthful and minerally. Rather elegantly styled wine, quite precise for the vintage. Very long on the finish. Lafon now uses just 50% new oak for his Genevrieres; as recently as 1992, this was made in all new barrels.

Distinctly tactile, even a bit phenolic, with penetrating acidity giving the citrus and stone flavors terrific cut. Slightly fuller yellow than the 2014. Very ripe yellow peach, orange blossom, ginger and pineapple dominate the nose, which comes across as a bit less salty and dry than the '14. Then wonderfully silky in the mouth and thicker than the '14; also quite dry, with its fatness and touch of sweetness perfectly leavened by--and also nicely buffering--a thread of lemony acidity. This is lower in acidity than the '14 but it also has a lower pH. Can't quite match the '14 in inner-mouth perfume, complexity or lift but aeration brought outstanding depth and flavor complexity, and the dry, rich, classic finish boasts palate-staining citrussy length. Give this at least another couple years in the cellar to harmonize and gain in complexity. (just 18 hectoliters per hectare produced; 4.3 g/l acidity; 3.16 pH)

The 2018 Meursault Les Porusots 1er Cru is maybe the dark horse of Dominique Lafon’s wines this vintage. Exceptional clarity and delineation on the nose, the crushed rock and white flower scents wafting from the glass. The palate is well defined and sports a very subtle reduction. Powerful and intense with plenty of spice, ginger and white pepper enhancing the finish. Superb.

Comtes Lafon Montrachet Grand Cru 1993 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 1993 Montrachet Grand Cru has a deep straw color with green tints. The bouquet is very attractive with engaging scents of orange blossom, quince and yellow flowers, fully mature but as fresh as a daisy. The palate is likewise mature with a fine bead of acidity, a touch of bitter lemon and orange pith, providing both the body and density you expect from such a Grand Cru. Unlike the 1989 tasted the previous day, this maintains its freshness in the glass, even if it did not manifest into something mightily profound (apart from a hint of menthol on the nose). It has an elegance and poise that I admire and it should give another 10 to 15 years of drinking fulfillment. Tasted at Carré des Feuillants restaurant in Paris.

    Vinous (92)

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru was the real upset at the annual Burgfest tasting: without doubt, it was the weakest of five Montrachets tasted blind, the consensus across all tasters. It has a fresh nose of orchard fruit and apple blossom, well defined but clearly missing some complexity. The palate is slightly honeyed in texture, and quite dense and harmonious, although not the most tensile or delineated of the five Montrachets tasted blind. Quite limey and lemony on the finish, with good length and persistence, but I just wonder if it might have been better picked a day earlier. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru comprises seven barrels this year. It has a stunning, penetrating bouquet that rivets you to the spot with astonishing mineral tension and scents of wet granite, citrus lemon and grilled walnut. The beautifully balanced palate offers hints of white chocolate and almond and amazing delineation and mineralité, not to mention stunning persistence on the finish. This is a wine that makes you go "wow," or rather "WOW" it deserves capital letters.

(just 2-1/2 barrels produced, or 15 hectoliters per hectare): Bright dark red. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, violet and dark chocolate. Richer and rounder than the Monthélie-Les Duresses, with more power and framing acidity to its slightly medicinal black cherry fruit. At once thick and elegant, this highly concentrated, long wine finishes with very classy tannins.

The 2017 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has an open-knit bouquet with just a soupçon of oak to be subsumed and comes across a little gawky. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. A bit oaky, perhaps, but charming and certainly pure. This Clos des Chênes does improve with aeration and achieves a satisfying sense of elegance, femininity and poise. Closure is Diam 30 Organic. The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which was bottled earlier than the Champans, has an intense nose of black cherries, blueberry, seaweed and iodine. Real succulence here, and very good persistence; the elegance is only apparent after the wine is slipping down the throat.

(three-quarters of the barrels had finished their malo): Good bright red-ruby. High-pitched aromas of licorice, bitter chocolate, violet and spices. Intense dark fruit flavors show a sappy freshness and great purity. This, too, is like a tightly coiled spring today yet comes across as utterly seamless. Finishes with noble tannins and superb persistence, with subtle hints of leather and soil. Outstanding energy and texture here.

    Wine Advocate (93+)

Tasted blind, the 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu offers up a deep bouquet of red-black cherries, spices, potpourri, espresso roast and subtle grilled meat. Full-bodied, ample and sappy on the palate, it's rich but vibrant, with fine-grained structuring tannins that are beginning to assert themselves on the finish. Having drunk several bottles of this wine since release, the extent to which it's shutting down is clearly apparent, and at this stage, patience will be required.

The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle.

The 2018 Mâcon-Lilly-Lamartine Clos du Four was bottled a little later than the other cuvées. It has a crisp, ripe bouquet with waxy aromas infusing the citrus fruit. The well-balanced palate features orange peel and marmalade notes on the entry. Slightly viscous in style, with a persistent finish. Offers moderate depth of texture but harmonious acidity gives the dry lemon, lime, spice and herb flavors more structure and grip than the Mâcon-Prissé.

    Vinous (97-99)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which was bottled earlier than the Champans, has an intense nose of black cherries, blueberry, seaweed and iodine. The palate continues that theme: saline on the entry, dense and grippy, and very nicely focused with a lively, lightly spiced finish.

I love the richness here, although I have a preference for some of the more austere examples this vintage.

The 2020 Mâcon-Lilly-Lamartine Clos du Four was bottled just before the harvest. Lovely tangerine, citrus peel and pressed yellow flower scents on the nose, the palate opens nicely with impressive concentration, fine acidity and veins of stem ginger towards the persistent, Muscat-tinged finish. Excellent. Closure: Diam.

(two-thirds done in foudres and one-third in demi-muids): Bright yellow. Deeper aromas of white peach, citrus fruit, menthol, flowers and medicinal herbs. Offers moderate depth of texture but harmonious acidity gives the dry lemon, lime, spice and herb flavors more structure and grip than the Mâcon-Prissé. And longer on the aftertaste, displaying an herbal complexity. This wine has a very low pH of 3.02, and just over 4.5 grams per liter acidity, according to winemaker Caroline Gon.

The 2020 Mâcon-Lilly-Lamartine was the last fruit to be picked in early September according to Dominique Lafon. It has a fresh, quite tensile bouquet with lemon curd and citrus peel, nicely defined and quite vigorous. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and is lightly spiced with a tangy and quite persistent finish. Excellent. Closure: Diam.
