    Comte Liger-Belair

Although the Domaine is relatively recent, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an engineer and oenologist, is renewing a two hundred year old family tradition. The vines are biodynamicaly cultivated and a horse ploughs part of the vineyard.  Owning excellent vineyards, he produces wines that are light, aromatic and elegant.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2005 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Liger-Belair's 2005 La Romanée is powerful and intense, but also elegant at the same time. Deep, rich and beautifully layered, the 2005 is going to need another decade or so to fully blossom. The flavors are dark and resonant, with plenty of red cherry, plum, spice and floral notes buffered by a real sense of vertical energy. If opened within the next few years, the 2005 needs a good bit of air for some of the reductive notes to blow off.

    Vinous (95)

Christmas cake, blood orange, mint, white pepper, dried flowers and tobacco are some of the many nuances that grace the 2006 La Romanée. Noble, understated and classy to the core, the 2006 can be enjoyed today, but it remains tightly wound, energetic and could certainly use another few years in bottle. A compelling interplay of exotic spices and bright, saline-inflected notes grace the finish. This is a superb wine for the vintage.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2009 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2009 La Romanée Grand Cru is going from strength to strength. It has a clear dark garnet colour. The nose is exquisite, perhaps having dispensed with just some of its nascent richness since I last tasted it in 2011, armed with bewitching wild strawberry, raspberry coulis scents that crescendo. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, beautifully balanced with that tincture of dried blood extant. There is real finesse and poise embroidered in this La Romanée that knows that sometimes less is more. Tasted June 2015.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (96-98)

The 2014 La Romanée is a wine of almost raw intensity that is going to need a good 15+ years in bottle before it is at the very early part of its maturity. A huge core of primary fruit announces the 2014, a wine that is likely to thrill those lucky enough to own it for several decades. The 2014 is super-impressive, even at this early stage.

    Vinous (96-98)

The 2018 La Romanée Grand Cru has a very detailed, complex bouquet of copious black cherry, blueberry and raspberry preserve aromas that burst from the glass, seamlessly integrated with the new oak. This is a multidimensional bouquet (as usual). The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannins rendering this a very pliant La Romanée. Extremely focused with a silky texture and a vibrant, sorbet-fresh, persistent finish that lingers in the mouth. This is another profound La Romanée that will give decades of drinking pleasure for those who can afford that pleasure.

    Comte Liger-Belair Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cras 2015 (1x75cl)

    Vinous ()

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Cras 1er Cru is heavily reduced and displays a touch of brettanomyces that obscures any fruit expression. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, low in acidity, and quite animally and bretty, with a smudged finish. This wine performed much better in barrel, and given the showing of the domaine's other 2015s, I suspect this was just a misbehaving bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

    Vinous (88-89)

The 2010 Vosne-Romanée is quite fleshy and attractive in this vintage. Today it is the freshness of the fruit that emerges most clearly . Pretty floral and spiced notes add complexity on the soft, caressing finish. The Vosne villages is a blend of fruit from an assortment of parcels, roughly 80% on the bottom of the slope and 20% closer to the top of the hill.

(20% of this fruit comes from the top of the slope, which Liger-Belair says brings limestone freshness): Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, roast coffee and smoke on the nose. Dense and round, offering a velvety texture and good stuffing for village wine. Very ripe but nicely leavened by smoky minerality. In a softer style, finishing with ripe tannins. This is almost ready to be racked; indeed, Liger-Belair planned to bottle it before Christmas.

Good medium red. Sexy aromas of strawberry, smoke, tobacco and earth, plus a whiff of stone. Broad, lush and dry, with strong smoky, saline soil tones and a fine dusting of tannins. I'd like to have seen a bit more verve, though. (My sample of the Vosne-Romanee La Colombiere showed firm minerality but came across as rather dry; as it had been pulled from barrel prior to the racking ten days before my visit, I'll wait to taste this in finished form.)
