    Joseph Roty

An augmentation of Domaine Joseph and Philipe Roty, they are not swayed by current trends. They do not sell their wine until it is bottled so they are always a vintage behind the market. Joseph had a cult following amongst Burgundy fans and he has passed his style of rich powerful wines onto his son.

Joseph et Philippe Roty Cote-de-Nuits Villages 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

The 2017 Côtes de Nuits Villages has an elegant, refined bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Very natural and poised. I prefer this to the 2018.

Joseph et Philippe Roty Cote-de-Nuits Villages 2019 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Côte de Nuits-Villages was showing a bit of reduction on the nose. Meanwhile, the medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins, quite fresh and well balanced. Lightly spiced with white pepper and clove toward the finish, showing very good persistence in the mouth. This is an excellent Côte de Nuits-Villages.

    Wine Advocate (88)

The 2016 Bourgogne Rouge has a well-defined bouquet with a lovely floral touch of wilted rose petals that develops with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, quite pure in the mouth with a confit-like, gourmand finish, almost savory in style. What an interesting red Burgundy Roty has made this year.

    2007

Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvee de Tres VV 2007 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (92-95)

Bright, medium ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, crushed stone, menthol and violet. Superconcentrated, thick and sweet without any impression of undue weight. The intense black fruit and spice flavors are lifted by a captivating violet perfume. Finishes with explosive length and aromatic intensity, with the tannins covered by black fruits and spices. A great bottle in the making.

    2014

Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvee de Tres VV 2014 (6x150cl)

    Vinous (94+)

Full red-ruby. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and violet are complicated by a distinct element of torrefaction. Densely packed and hugely concentrated, conveying outstanding energy and saline minerality to its remarkably sappy black cherry, dark berry, earth and floral flavors. A caramel note is probably due to the oaks (Roty uses Billon and Rousseau barrels here). Finishes extremely long, with saline and licorice notes. There's nothing hard about these tannins but this wine will nonetheless require a long time in the cellar to approach its peak.

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes is fabulous, blossoming in the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berry fruit, cassis, coniferous forest floor, incense, rose petal and wood smoke. On the palate, the wine is multidimensional, expansive and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and depth and wonderful sappy energy, its ripe tannins cloaked in layer after layer of fruit. A beautiful Charmes-Chambertin, from some of the oldest vines in Burgundy.

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes has turned out even better than I anticipated, unfurling in the glass with a magical bouquet of cassis, plums and blackberries mingled with dark chocolate, spices, sweet soil tones, licorice and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's extraordinarily sumptuous and concentrated, framed by velvety tannins that caress the palate, and underpinned by lively acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. Pierre-Jean Roty compares it to the 2012 and 2009 renditions, which readers who follow this domaine will know is high praise indeed.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru comes from 139-year-old vines. It has a slightly earthy bouquet of black fruit infused with sous-bois and black truffle. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, very focused and intense. Pain d’épice and sage notes develop toward the structured, grippy finish. Good density and assertiveness here. 2013

    Joseph Roty Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is located in the lieu-dit of Mazis-Bas, between the vines of Bernard Dugat (Dugat-Py) and Domaine Maume. Matured in 90% new oak it has a fine clarity on the nose, the oak a little prominent, but that will meld together with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit mixed with blueberry, vanilla and a slither of marmalade. This is quite opulent but it remains nicely controlled with a long finish that is in the same style as Bernard Dugat’s Mazis. This is a knockout wine from Roty, a vin de garde that demands considerable cellaring.

The 2016 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a surprisingly understated bouquet, mainly black fruit here, sous-bois, pencil box and suggestions of black truffle that mutate into curry leaf aromas with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, quite masculine in style, perhaps beginning to close down already. This is a rather stocky Mazis-Chambertin that will require several years in bottle. Tasted at the Domaine.
