Domaine Leflaive

About Domaine Leflaive

The single most famous and enormously respected estate in Puligny-Montrachet, there have been members of the Leflaive clan dabbling in vinous affairs in the area since 1717 – the true founder of the current domaine as we know it, however, was Joseph Leflaive (1970-1953). The great man’s sons did an admirable job of expanding their vineyard holdings, as well as building the foundations of the fearsome reputation this Burgundian legend enjoys to this day.

It was under the visionary and transformative stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, taking the reins in 1990, that this mythical domaine became a leader of Burgundy’s now-ubiquitous biodynamic movement, with the entire estate converting to fully biodynamic as early as 1997! The tragic and untimely death of Anne-Claude in 2015 saw general management pass to Eric Remy, who is doing an admirable job of honouring the legacy of the great woman.

Viniculture

Domaine Leflaive is one of the largest holders of Grands and 1er Crus in the appellation, with 22 hectares in total of which no fewer than 5 are Grands Crus. One would be hard pressed to find any domaine with finer plots at their disposal, and it is most fortunate that the Leflaive family are true masters at expressing every ounce of sublime minerality, personality and vitality from these exceptional terroirs.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2016 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Bienvenues Batard Montrachet Grand Cru was diminished from 22 to seven barrels this vintage. The bouquet demanded some coaxing from the glass, a little introverted following the Pucelles and Folatières. With time there are fleeting glimpses of wild mint and iodine. The palate is very balanced and harmonious, a pretty and feminine Bienvenues with nicely pitched acidity and a touch of orange peel and white peach toward the saline finish. I suspect it will drink earlier than Leflaive’s other grand crus.

Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (89)

Leflaive's 2015 Bourgogne Blanc is excellent and one of the finest generic bottlings to be found in the Côte de Beaune this year, offering up a note of fresh lemon, nutmeg and chamomile that is already quite expressive. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, sappy and ample, with impressive dimension and concentration for its level and a long, controlled finish. The balance here is excellent, and this outpaces plenty of villages level white Burgundies in this vintage.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2004 (1x75cl)

Burghound (95)

I held my breath when this was opened given the number of premoxed 2004s I've encountered from Leflaive but happily my concern was unwarranted as the highly complex and elegant nose of citrus, wet stone and white floral aromas was not only quite fresh but even relatively youthful. Confirming the impression conveyed by the nose was the excellent vibrancy of the beautifully well-detailed and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exude an almost agressive minerality onto the penetratingly persistent and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is strikingly good and if perhaps not one of the all-time great Leflaive vintages for their Chevalier, this more than holds its own. Note that for my taste this is still on the way up and while it would be no crime to open a magnum now, it should reward a few more years of cellarling and then drink for another 10 to 15 years after that.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2015 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

The 2015 Chevalier-Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive is stunning from bottle, wafting from the glass with a lovely nose of lemon pith, wet stones, spring flowers and toasted nuts. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with extraordinary intensity and mid-palate depth, a long, lingering finish and an effortless sense of cohesion and completeness. But what's especially impressive about this Chevalier is its grace and textural elegance in this vintage: while its concentration and amplitude certainly reflect the year, nothing is out of place. A step up over even the superb Bâtard-Montrachet and one of the high points of the 2015 vintage in white Burgundy.

This wine hums with energy, with the tight, floral perfume of chardonnay grown in Puligny, a focus on lime and orange blossoms, an astonishing integration of oak and mineral tension with the fruit. It feels buoyant, a rich beauty that keeps improving over the course of several days. Along with the freshness of the fruit, there's a sense of cool limestone radiating the warmth of the sun. Wine & Spirit Magazine (96)

Domaine Leflaive includes 7.56 acres of Les Pucelles in three blocks, with many vines dating back to the 1950s and '60s. Those vines, saved from botrytis by September's north wind, captured the sunshine at the end of a long, damp season and transformed it into bold, spicy energy in the wine. The mineral flavors seem to reach back to the deep roots of the vines, sustained with the freshness of an orchard of heirloom apples. A fine vintage of Les Pucelles, this will age with grace for a decade or more.

Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 2008 (6x75cl)

Wine & Spirit Magazine (96)

Domaine Leflaive includes 7.56 acres of Les Pucelles in three blocks, with many vines dating back to the 1950s and '60s. Those vines, saved from botrytis by September's north wind, captured the sunshine at the end of a long, damp season and transformed it into bold, spicy energy in the wine. The mineral flavors seem to reach back to the deep roots of the vines, sustained with the freshness of an orchard of heirloom apples. A fine vintage of Les Pucelles, this will age with grace for a decade or more.
