2000 |
Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2000 (1x75cl) Vinous (95)A big, voluptuous Burgundy, the 2000 Bâtard-Montrachet captures all of the personality of this site in its large-scaled frame and pure density. All of that energy is focused inward, though, as the Bâtard is not at all showy, but rather a wine of structure. The 2000 still has a lot to say.

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2008 (1x75cl) Wine Spectator (95)Broad-shouldered and somewhat monolithic, this white plays its peach, citrus and apple flavors off spice and toast notes. The vibrant structure keeps this well-defined, as the citrus and spice themes echo on the finish. There's a brilliance to this wine, but it needs time. Best from 2014 through 2028. 65 cases imported. -BS

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2011 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (95)Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Bâtard-Montrachet 2011 from Anne-Claude Leflaive is slightly deeper in color than its peers. The nose is a little austere at first, but it unfolds nicely with impressive mineral (slate and flint) scents, well defined and poised. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. There is a bright citric heart to this Bâtard-Montrachet with fleeting touches of nectarine and citrus lemon joining the edgy mineral finish. This is a classy Grand Cru – regal but not imposing.

2013 |
Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2013 (3x75cl) Burghound (93-96)Here the nose is restrained to the point of being all but mute and only aggressive swirling coaxes the grudging aromas of pear, white peach, apricot, acacia blossom and discreet menthol nuances. As is usually the case there is more size, weight and muscle to the medium weight plus flavors that possess a hint of bitter lemon on the massively long finish. What I find interesting about the 2013 Bâtard is not only that it is more elegant then usual but also that it manages to deliver so much volume and power without any appreciable weight. In a word, brilliant.

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2014 (3x75cl) Wine Spectator (97)This intense white exhibits lemon, apple and honeydew melon flavors over a backbone of crackling acidity. Linear and persistent, this has an extra dimension, resonating on the long aftertaste of spice and mineral. Best from 2020 through 2032.

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl) Vinous (95-97)The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a touch more pungency compared to the Bienvenue, but perhaps not quite the same alluring charm, at least at this primordial stage. The palate is where it’s at: supremely well balanced, exuding a sense of coiled-up energy countered by a dense, persistent finish. A bit of a beast, but time will tame it.

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (1x75cl) Vinous (96)The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru shows a little more clarity, a touch more crystalline on the nose compared to the Bienvenue, scents of Granny Smith apples, petrichor and gunflint. It is controlled and penetrating. The palate is extremely well balanced with a fine silver bead of acidity that cuts through the concentrated malic fruit, a dash of pepper towards the finish that fans out gloriously, sour lemon and grapefruit lingering on the aftertaste. Wonderful. Closure: Diam 30

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 1997 (3x75cl) Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)Lemon, nuts, flowers and spicy oak on the nose. Sweet, broad and very rich, but strong chewy extract gives it shape and focus. Flavors are quite refined for the vintage. The longest yet of these '97s, and spicy on the aftertaste.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2002 (6x75cl) Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)The most interesting of the wines in our first flight was the 2002 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet, which remained bright, layered and beautifully focused throughout the course of the evening. The Leflaive was even better when I came back to it at the end of the evening. Although still young, it embodied all of the qualities Burgundy lovers seek in age worthy whites. I loved it.

2009 |
Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2009 (3x75cl) Wine & Spirit Magazine (95)Tucked into the lower, northern corner of Bâtard, Bienvenues holds some of Domaine Leflaive?s oldest vines, 2.84 acres planted in 1958 and ?59. It was in an effort to sustain those vines that Anne-Claude Leflaive and Pierre Morey turned to biodynamics in the early 1990s, their success leading them to convert the entire domaine in 1997. The root systems of those ancient vines focus this wine more on its soil character than its grand cru siblings, with their sunnier dispositions. This leads you on with floral scents of honeycomb and vanilla, then sucks you down through layer upon layer of earth, brightness and darkness in flashes of delicacy and brooding power. While the Bâtard is blunt in its richness, this is energized in its terroir expression, as if to share the insistence of Madame Leflaive herself that these 50-year-old vines will persevere.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2014 Bienvenue Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has a come-hither bouquet that is very immediate: passion fruit, apricot blossom, cold stone and even a faint touch of strawberry winegums. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, good weight in the mouth with a touch of citrus lemon and lime, but perhaps just needing more complexity and terroir expression to come through on the finish. This is one of the best 2014 Bienvenues that I have come across -- an absolute delight.

2015 |
Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl) Wine Advocate (94+)The 2015 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is showing very well, opening in the glass with a reticent but detailed bouquet of fresh pear, white peach, tangerine oil, spring flowers, pastry cream and a delicate framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and effortlessly complete, with succulent acids, elegantly glossy textural impact and understated persistence on the finish. This cuvée is beautifully balanced and full of energy, but it has definitely closed down after bottling and will demand five years in the cellar at the very minimum before it begins to expatiate. Matured in 20% new oak and bottled under Diam 30.

2017 |
Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93-95+)Like the Pucelles, the 2017 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is quite tensile and reserved, unfurling in the glass with aromas of green orchard fruit, iodine, orange rind and creamy new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and fleshy, but taut—even firm—at the core, with good concentration, tangy acid and a bright, chalky finish. Like all these releases, I'm looking forward to seeing it from bottle.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl) Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2018 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a terse, stoic, delineated bouquet with scents of wet limestone and sea spray, just a slight menthol note developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. A very pretty, elegant Bienvenue that reveals hints of blood orange and sour lemon on the precise, persistent finish. This is a gorgeous Bienvenue.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (1x75cl) Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is cut from a similar cloth to the Les Pucelles on the nose: reserved, mineral-driven with hints of orange blossom emerging with time, later more Granny Smith apples. The palate is strict and precise, demonstrating impressive weight, especially towards the back end. Maybe not quite as complex as the best of Leflaive’s Premier Cru, though it is extremely pesistent with a long ginger-tinged aftertaste. Closure: Diam 30

Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc 2014 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)The 2014 Bourgogne Blanc has developed nicely during the remainder of its élevage since I tasted it from stainless steel tank, offering apple blossom, flint and smoky scents that possess much more character. The palate is fresh on the entry with citrus peel and fresh Granny Smith, well judged acidity and a bright and lively finish. This is precisely what you want from a Bourgogne Blanc. Tasted December 2016.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2007 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)The 2007 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru opens in the glass with scents of lemon oil, clear honey, confit citrus, warm bread, almond paste and a very discrete touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and multidimensional, with unusual volume and breadth for the vintage, striking concentration and an incisive spine of acidity, concluding with a long, vibrant and chalky finish. While this 2007 is still a few years from true maturity, it clearly numbers among the wines of the vintage.
