Domaine Leflaive

About Domaine Leflaive

The single most famous and enormously respected estate in Puligny-Montrachet, there have been members of the Leflaive clan dabbling in vinous affairs in the area since 1717 – the true founder of the current domaine as we know it, however, was Joseph Leflaive (1970-1953). The great man’s sons did an admirable job of expanding their vineyard holdings, as well as building the foundations of the fearsome reputation this Burgundian legend enjoys to this day.

It was under the visionary and transformative stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, taking the reins in 1990, that this mythical domaine became a leader of Burgundy’s now-ubiquitous biodynamic movement, with the entire estate converting to fully biodynamic as early as 1997! The tragic and untimely death of Anne-Claude in 2015 saw general management pass to Eric Remy, who is doing an admirable job of honouring the legacy of the great woman.

Viniculture

Domaine Leflaive is one of the largest holders of Grands and 1er Crus in the appellation, with 22 hectares in total of which no fewer than 5 are Grands Crus. One would be hard pressed to find any domaine with finer plots at their disposal, and it is most fortunate that the Leflaive family are true masters at expressing every ounce of sublime minerality, personality and vitality from these exceptional terroirs.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2016 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Bienvenues Batard Montrachet Grand Cru was diminished from 22 to seven barrels this vintage. The bouquet demanded some coaxing from the glass, a little introverted following the Pucelles and Folatières. With time there are fleeting glimpses of wild mint and iodine. The palate is very balanced and harmonious, a pretty and feminine Bienvenues with nicely pitched acidity and a touch of orange peel and white peach toward the saline finish. I suspect it will drink earlier than Leflaive’s other grand crus.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2010 (6x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (97)

(bottled two weeks before my tasting): Bright pale yellow. Very pure, chalky aromas of lemon, lime, white flowers and iodine. Boasts outstanding tension and building intensity to its powerful lemon peel, pineapple and crushed stone flavors. Rare precision and inner-mouth perfume here. Saturates every square millimeter of the palate yet finishes with an impression of weightlessness. A wine of great finesse, this should go on for two decades or more. "The Batard is for the body while this is for the spirit," notes winemaker Eric Remy. One of my favorite wines of the vintage.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2017 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95-97)

The 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru delivers a vibrant but reserved bouquet of lemon zest, white flowers and crushed chalk that is still some distance from displaying all its breadth of expression. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and tensile, with a tight-knit core, searingly intense chalky extract and an electric sense of energy, concluding with a long finish. This is the most linear Chevaliers I tasted in the 2017 vintage, which was typically somewhat more open at the same stage in Anne-Claude's day, so it will be interesting to see how much plenitude it displays in bottle.

Vinous (87-89)

The 2018 Mâcon-Verzé comes from nine different vineyards over 13 hectares and is matured in stainless steel, concrete and a small amount of used oak. This was scheduled to be bottled toward the end of 2019. It has pretty Granny Smith apple and wet limestone aromas that are well defined. The palate is crisp and fresh, with a strong citric element and a touch of sour lemon toward the powerful finish.

Powerful, intense white Burgundy, with both breadth and depth. It shows a honeyed richness and weight, but also citronella and mineral locked up tight. Balanced, it expands on the finish with a long, nutty aftertaste. Best from 2008 through 2020. 430 cases imported. -BS

A strikingly elegant nose presents a broad range of yellow and white orchard fruits with ample honeysuckle, spice, lilac and citrus nuances. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer and wonderfully seductive before concluding in a palate coating, saline and linear finish that possesses superb depth and length. Like the Combettes this is clearly built-to-age and while it will certainly be capable of rewarding longer-term cellaring it should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years.
