2012 |
Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2012 (3x75cl) Vinous (93-95)Bright medium yellow. Sexy aromas of peach, nectarine and brown spices, plus hints of wild cherry and fraise des bois. Quite full, rich and powerful, with a distinctly tactile quality to the saline iodine and mineral flavors. This ripe, brooding wine finishes with inexorable persistence. This has 13.45% alcohol and a post-malo pH of 3.1, according to Eric Remy.

2013 |
Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2013 (3x75cl) Burghound (93-96)Here the nose is restrained to the point of being all but mute and only aggressive swirling coaxes the grudging aromas of pear, white peach, apricot, acacia blossom and discreet menthol nuances. As is usually the case there is more size, weight and muscle to the medium weight plus flavors that possess a hint of bitter lemon on the massively long finish. What I find interesting about the 2013 Bâtard is not only that it is more elegant then usual but also that it manages to deliver so much volume and power without any appreciable weight. In a word, brilliant.

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)5-Star Wine
Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet also takes time to emerge, then shows a little more power than the Bienvenues. The oak is a fraction more present but still superbly integrated. The taffeta texture could not possibly have more tensile strength, with an exemplary purity of fruit. To have so much power (not in an alcoholic sense) and yet so much grape. Little light fresh apple notes to finish. Tasted: May 2022

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2012 (3x75cl) Tim Atkin (97)A class act in every way, this benefits from the lower alchols of the vintage, as it did in 2007. It's a powerful wine, but it's harmonious at the same time. Smoky and richly textured, with attractive cinnamon oak, sappy acidity and a nuanced minerally finish.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2014 Bienvenue Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has a come-hither bouquet that is very immediate: passion fruit, apricot blossom, cold stone and even a faint touch of strawberry winegums. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, good weight in the mouth with a touch of citrus lemon and lime, but perhaps just needing more complexity and terroir expression to come through on the finish. This is one of the best 2014 Bienvenues that I have come across -- an absolute delight.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl) Wine Advocate (94+)The 2015 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is showing very well, opening in the glass with a reticent but detailed bouquet of fresh pear, white peach, tangerine oil, spring flowers, pastry cream and a delicate framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and effortlessly complete, with succulent acids, elegantly glossy textural impact and understated persistence on the finish. This cuvée is beautifully balanced and full of energy, but it has definitely closed down after bottling and will demand five years in the cellar at the very minimum before it begins to expatiate. Matured in 20% new oak and bottled under Diam 30.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl) Vinous (95-97)The 2018 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a terse, stoic, delineated bouquet with scents of wet limestone and sea spray, just a slight menthol note developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. A very pretty, elegant Bienvenue that reveals hints of blood orange and sour lemon on the precise, persistent finish. This is a gorgeous Bienvenue.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (1x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is cut from a similar cloth to the Les Pucelles on the nose: reserved, mineral-driven with hints of orange blossom emerging with time, later more Granny Smith apples. The palate is strict and precise, demonstrating impressive weight, especially towards the back end. Maybe not quite as complex as the best of Leflaive’s Premier Cru, though it is extremely pesistent with a long ginger-tinged aftertaste. Closure: Diam 30

2002 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2002 (2x150cl) Wine Advocate (96)This is a Chevalier-Montrachet that really delivers. The 2000 Chevalier Montrachet has a sensational walnut and smoke-tinged nose that is brilliantly focused and vibrant. This just shimmers with tension and develops hints of cockleshell with time. The palate follows through in style: taut and precise and barely showing its age, deep with great intensity and subtle notes of vanilla pod and coconut toward the finish, though they never obstruct the mineral core of this fantastic Chevalier-Montrachet. Drink now without guilt, cellar for another decade likewise.

2004 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2004 (1x75cl) Burghound (95)I held my breath when this was opened given the number of premoxed 2004s I've encountered from Leflaive but happily my concern was unwarranted as the highly complex and elegant nose of citrus, wet stone and white floral aromas was not only quite fresh but even relatively youthful. Confirming the impression conveyed by the nose was the excellent vibrancy of the beautifully well-detailed and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exude an almost agressive minerality onto the penetratingly persistent and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is strikingly good and if perhaps not one of the all-time great Leflaive vintages for their Chevalier, this more than holds its own. Note that for my taste this is still on the way up and while it would be no crime to open a magnum now, it should reward a few more years of cellarling and then drink for another 10 to 15 years after that.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2005 (2x150cl)

2005 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2005 (2x150cl) Wine & Spirit Magazine (98)This is a great vintage from Domaine Leflaive, which owns 4.92 acres in Chevalier, including a significant portion of vines dating to the 1950s. This 2005 is marked by the concentration of a smaller-than-average harvest (cool weather during flowering caused poor or uneven fruit set). The season was dry, the grapes harvested on the 20th and 21st of September, fruit days on the biodynamic calendar, following several days of north winds and sunshine that peaked the fruit ripeness. The beneficent conditions and the care with which estate manager Pierre Morey and Anne-Claude Leflaive farm their vines resulted in this brilliant Chevalier. It shows an aristocratic finesse from the moment the bottle is opened. The wine's power and dynamic intensity make it hard to resist, as if it went beyond perfect balance and form to sustain the energy of the fruit in the glass. The taste is little more than a caress that lasts for minutes, bringing idealized images of Burgundy to mind: the sun on a hillside of yellow herbs growing between the vines, the roots working their way through minerals in the soil, a cool limestone cellar where wine rests in oak. The elegance that comes from Chevalier's high point on the hill separates it from Domaine Leflaive's more broad-shouldered Bâtard, the distinction amplified in this vintage. Both are wines to enjoy for decades to come.

2013 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2013 (3x75cl) Burghound (94-97)Like the Puligny villages the expressive nose plays right on the edge of exoticism with its dried yellow orchard fruit elements that add breadth if not necessarily elegance to the citrus, floral, spice and discreet herbal tea nuances. There is absolutely stunning intensity to the ultra-precise and stony flavors that are akin to rolling small rocks around in the mouth, all wrapped in a saline and kaleidoscopically complex finish that reminds me a great deal of a grand cru Chablis with its compact and linear finish. This is breathtakingly good though note well that it's going to require a long snooze in a cool cellar as this is nowhere near ready and I very much doubt that it will be young.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2014 (1x150cl) Decanter (98)My (SB) wine of the vintage. It has a huge, intense nose of lime, pears and apricot with aromatic tension and complexity. A fine, assertive and extremely youthful attack: concentrated yet racy and very mineral from start to finish. A racehorse of a wine with amazing length and detail, and that classic, stony minerality.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (98)The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru needed a little encouragement from the glass. Eventually it reveals captivating scents of honeysuckle, petrichor and pressed yellow flowers, an underlying spiciness that comes through with aeration. The palate has a beguiling symmetry from the start: a killer line of acidity counterbalancing the intensity of this Chevalier, gentle grip towards the spicy and "flowing" finish. Strikingly elegant, cool and restrained aromas are comprised by notes of citrus confit, mineral reduction, anise, exotic tea and the classic acacia blossom nuances. The almost painfully intense medium-bodied flavors are at once succulent yet chiseled while the practically pungent minerality adds a sense of lift to the hugely long finish that is youthfully austere and Zen-like in its harmony. This is quite simply majestic in its class and grace and is a wine that should age effortlessly for years.

Leflaive Macon-Verze 2018 (6x150cl) Vinous (89)The 2018 Mâcon-Verzé is bright and nicely focused. Light tropical overtones add an exotic flair to the candied citrus, apricot and mineral-driven flavors. The Mâcon-Verzé is initially rather taut, but it relaxes with time in the glass and gains notable volume as well to play off veins of underlying salinity.
