2008 |
Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2008 (1x75cl) Wine Spectator (95)Broad-shouldered and somewhat monolithic, this white plays its peach, citrus and apple flavors off spice and toast notes. The vibrant structure keeps this well-defined, as the citrus and spice themes echo on the finish. There's a brilliance to this wine, but it needs time. Best from 2014 through 2028. 65 cases imported. -BS

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2011 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (95)Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Bâtard-Montrachet 2011 from Anne-Claude Leflaive is slightly deeper in color than its peers. The nose is a little austere at first, but it unfolds nicely with impressive mineral (slate and flint) scents, well defined and poised. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. There is a bright citric heart to this Bâtard-Montrachet with fleeting touches of nectarine and citrus lemon joining the edgy mineral finish. This is a classy Grand Cru – regal but not imposing.

2013 |
Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2013 (3x75cl) Burghound (93-96)Here the nose is restrained to the point of being all but mute and only aggressive swirling coaxes the grudging aromas of pear, white peach, apricot, acacia blossom and discreet menthol nuances. As is usually the case there is more size, weight and muscle to the medium weight plus flavors that possess a hint of bitter lemon on the massively long finish. What I find interesting about the 2013 Bâtard is not only that it is more elegant then usual but also that it manages to deliver so much volume and power without any appreciable weight. In a word, brilliant.

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2014 (3x75cl) Wine Spectator (97)This intense white exhibits lemon, apple and honeydew melon flavors over a backbone of crackling acidity. Linear and persistent, this has an extra dimension, resonating on the long aftertaste of spice and mineral. Best from 2020 through 2032.

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2015 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)The Leflaive 2015 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a superb achievement in the 2015 vintage, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of white peach, fresh bread, pear, preserved citrus, beeswax and crisp yellow orchard fruit. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and authoritative, distinguished by its sense of completeness and control, with terrific depth and amplitude and a long, reserved finish. The Bâtard is one of the high-points of the Leflaive range this year, fully realizing the potential of the vintage.

Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (1x75cl) Vinous (96)The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru shows a little more clarity, a touch more crystalline on the nose compared to the Bienvenue, scents of Granny Smith apples, petrichor and gunflint. It is controlled and penetrating. The palate is extremely well balanced with a fine silver bead of acidity that cuts through the concentrated malic fruit, a dash of pepper towards the finish that fans out gloriously, sour lemon and grapefruit lingering on the aftertaste. Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 1997 (3x75cl) Vinous (92+)Reticent spicy/floral/herbal nose offers an enticing hint of lime blossom. Dense, minerally and solidly structured, if a bit linear today. Not a particularly powerful style but perhaps better balanced and fleshier than the '98. Expands slowly on the very long aftertaste.

Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93-95+)Like the Pucelles, the 2017 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is quite tensile and reserved, unfurling in the glass with aromas of green orchard fruit, iodine, orange rind and creamy new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and fleshy, but taut—even firm—at the core, with good concentration, tangy acid and a bright, chalky finish. Like all these releases, I'm looking forward to seeing it from bottle.

Maybe not quite as complex as the best of Leflaive’s Premier Cru, though it is extremely pesistent with a long ginger-tinged aftertaste. Closure: Diam 30

Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc 2014 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)The 2014 Bourgogne Blanc has developed nicely during the remainder of its élevage since I tasted it from stainless steel tank, offering apple blossom, flint and smoky scents that possess much more character. The palate is fresh on the entry with citrus peel and fresh Granny Smith, well judged acidity and a bright and lively finish. This is precisely what you want from a Bourgogne Blanc. 2002 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2002 (2x150cl) Wine Advocate (96)This is a Chevalier-Montrachet that really delivers. The 2000 Chevalier Montrachet has a sensational walnut and smoke-tinged nose that is brilliantly focused and vibrant. This just shimmers with tension and develops hints of cockleshell with time. The palate follows through in style: taut and precise and barely showing its age, deep with great intensity and subtle notes of vanilla pod and coconut toward the finish, though they never obstruct the mineral core of this fantastic Chevalier-Montrachet. Drink now without guilt, cellar for another decade likewise.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2005 (2x150cl)
In Bond: £6,473.00
|
2005 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2005 (2x150cl) Wine & Spirit Magazine (98)This is a great vintage from Domaine Leflaive, which owns 4.92 acres in Chevalier, including a significant portion of vines dating to the 1950s. This 2005 is marked by the concentration of a smaller-than-average harvest (cool weather during flowering caused poor or uneven fruit set). The season was dry, the grapes harvested on the 20th and 21st of September, fruit days on the biodynamic calendar, following several days of north winds and sunshine that peaked the fruit ripeness. The beneficent conditions and the care with which estate manager Pierre Morey and Anne-Claude Leflaive farm their vines resulted in this brilliant Chevalier. It shows an aristocratic finesse from the moment the bottle is opened. The wine's power and dynamic intensity make it hard to resist, as if it went beyond perfect balance and form to sustain the energy of the fruit in the glass. The taste is little more than a caress that lasts for minutes, bringing idealized images of Burgundy to mind: the sun on a hillside of yellow herbs growing between the vines, the roots working their way through minerals in the soil, a cool limestone cellar where wine rests in oak. The elegance that comes from Chevalier's high point on the hill separates it from Domaine Leflaive's more broad-shouldered Bâtard, the distinction amplified in this vintage. Both are wines to enjoy for decades to come.

2007 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2007 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)The 2007 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru opens in the glass with scents of lemon oil, clear honey, confit citrus, warm bread, almond paste and a very discrete touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and multidimensional, with unusual volume and breadth for the vintage, striking concentration and an incisive spine of acidity, concluding with a long, vibrant and chalky finish. While this 2007 is still a few years from true maturity, it clearly numbers among the wines of the vintage.

2008 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2008 (3x150cl) Wine & Spirit Magazine (98)Commanding beauty is rarely as subtle as this Chevalier-Montrachet, the curves of its flavor bringing the kind of emotional reaction that few wines have the power to achieve. The details of the flavor roll around in the mouth for minutes, bringing memories of moments in time?a summer sun shower, a long chord at the end of a piano concerto, Margot Fonteyn in La Bayadère. Over the top? Perhaps, but those are the bits and pieces of my notes that bring the wine back more clearly for me than the rest. It's hard to imagine a more perfect outcome for chardonnay planted on the austere limestone soils of the Montrachet hill?though this was not a perfect vintage. Perhaps its weaknesses may show with time. If so, that would be a long time, as four days of air only improve on its freshness and layered complexity. There is no better example of the brilliant farming at Domaine Leflaive. Not to be missed.

2009 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2009 (3x75cl) Wine & Spirit Magazine (98)Domaine Leflaive farms three adjacent parcels in Chevalier, totaling 4.92 acres of vines; the plantings range from the mid-1950s to 1980. It?s a significant holding at the top of the Montrachet hill, as much for its size as for the wines Leflaive?s team consistently produces from the site. This vintage is more concentrated, or perhaps more saturated with ripe flavors than usual, the heat of August powering the vines to an early harvest. Still, from the moment it?s first poured, that extract has a sunny purity, an umami fragrance of the earth and a lemon blossom honey scent that feigns sweetness later revealed as savory richness in a finish that raises this wine into another realm. Chevalier?s aristocratic soil comes into vivid focus over the course of several days through a scrim of silk. Prepare for your knees to melt and your heart to race as the wine reboots the balance of your senses. Or just enjoy it for what it is: A gracious grand cru, perfectly formed, with the detail of a pointillist painting that will come into focus over the next ten to fifteen years.

2017 |
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2017 (3x75cl) Vinous (97)The 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a clean, precise bouquet, fresh, taut and understated compared to its peers, perhaps the most elegant of an octet of Chevaliers tasted blind. The well-balanced palate delivers real power, offering flavors of candied orange peel and spices and a fine saline undercurrent. Harmonious, elegant yet intense, this should age with style and panache. It vies with Olivier Leflaive's own Chevalier for supremacy, and juxtaposing them blind, it has its nose in front. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl) Vinous (96-98)The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has an intense bouquet of lemon thyme, crushed limestone, and traces of orange pith and citrus peel that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is underpinned with a fine, almost razor-sharp bead of acidity. There is a wonderful crescendo of flavor here, leading to a multifaceted, lemongrass-tinged finish that lingers with a saline aftertaste. This is sheer class, a tremendous Chevalier-Montrachet.

Leflaive et Associes Bourgogne Blanc 2017 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (88-90)Aromas of waxy citrus rind, green apples and light reduction introduce the 2017 Bourgogne Blanc, a medium to full-bodied wine and elegantly glossy attack, a succulent core of fruit, and excellent cut and intensity for its level, concluding with a long finish.
