Domaine Leflaive

About Domaine Leflaive

The single most famous and enormously respected estate in Puligny-Montrachet, there have been members of the Leflaive clan dabbling in vinous affairs in the area since 1717 – the true founder of the current domaine as we know it, however, was Joseph Leflaive (1970-1953). The great man’s sons did an admirable job of expanding their vineyard holdings, as well as building the foundations of the fearsome reputation this Burgundian legend enjoys to this day.

It was under the visionary and transformative stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, taking the reins in 1990, that this mythical domaine became a leader of Burgundy’s now-ubiquitous biodynamic movement, with the entire estate converting to fully biodynamic as early as 1997! The tragic and untimely death of Anne-Claude in 2015 saw general management pass to Eric Remy, who is doing an admirable job of honouring the legacy of the great woman.

Viniculture

Domaine Leflaive is one of the largest holders of Grands and 1er Crus in the appellation, with 22 hectares in total of which no fewer than 5 are Grands Crus. One would be hard pressed to find any domaine with finer plots at their disposal, and it is most fortunate that the Leflaive family are true masters at expressing every ounce of sublime minerality, personality and vitality from these exceptional terroirs.

Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

Burghound (93-95)

Here the equally expressive nose is quite similar to that of the Pucelles save for the fact that it's ever-so-slightly riper and perhaps a bit more complex as well. Otherwise there is more volume to the sleek and tautly muscular medium weight flavors that possess a highly attractive underlying tension that adds a real sense of vibrancy on the slightly more powerful and more persistent finale where the supporting acidity is perfectly well-integrated. This impeccably well-balanced beauty should age effortlessly for years to come.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (92-95 )

Slightly fuller yellow color. Very ripe aromas of peach, apricot, butter and clove. Fat, sweet and ripe, with a concentrated flavor of peach supported by subtle underlying minerality. A big, young wine that's hiding more than it's showing today. Very full but not at all heavy. This really coats the palate and builds impressively on the back.

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with a reticent bouquet of lemon rind, citrus, hazelnut cream, white flowers and mandarin oil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, both denser and blockier than the Bienvenues-Bâtard, with exceptional concentration, tangy acids and a long finish. Today, the wine is only partially formed, but it's immensely promising. Pierre Vincent told me that it attained 12.8% natural alcohol, but despite that rather modest degree for a grand cru white Burgundy, it displays plenty of power and substance.

Wine Advocate (95-97)

The 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru delivers a vibrant but reserved bouquet of lemon zest, white flowers and crushed chalk that is still some distance from displaying all its breadth of expression. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and tensile, with a tight-knit core, searingly intense chalky extract and an electric sense of energy, concluding with a long finish. This is the most linear Chevaliers I tasted in the 2017 vintage, which was typically somewhat more open at the same stage in Anne-Claude's day, so it will be interesting to see how much plenitude it displays in bottle.
