Decanter has drawn a direct parallel between the quality of Don Melchor and the best Cabernet Sauvignon terroirs of the world, asserting that Don Melchor “stands next to the best wines in the world based on Cabernet Sauvignon, including those of Bordeaux and the Napa Valley” (Decanter).
The Don Melchor vineyard sits 650 metres above sea level on an ancient alluvial terrace left by retreating Andean glaciers. It is planted 90% with Cabernet Sauvignon (30+ years vines), which find an ideal terroir between the rocky soils and cooling breezes blowing down from the Andes.
We were thrilled for the Don Melchor team when we learned that James Suckling had scored the 2018 wine a perfect 100 points (for the first time), after the 99 points received by the 2017 vintage.
