    Etienne Sauzet

    About Etienne Sauzet

After inheriting some vines, Etienne Sauzet founded his eponymous domaine in the early part of the 20th century and established his domaine as one of the top producers of Puligny within a remarkably short span of time by Burgundian standards. With now son-in-law Benoît Riffault in charge of the winemaking, the wines continue to be some of the most sought-after whites from Puligny, thanks to their perfect concentration and energy.

Certified as biodynamic since 2013, the domaine’s winemaking style is to ferment in cask, giving the wines 12-month maturation on their lees, before transferring into stainless steel tanks where they remain on lees for a further 6 months prior to bottling. The domaine has followed this approach for many years, one which is increasingly popular as it allows both the richness of fruit to be enhanced and preserves the classic Puligny elegance and purity.

“The generic and village wines are elegant and stylish, while the 1er and Grands Crus are splendidly concentrated and opulent, yet beautifully proportioned and never overbearing. They are some of the most sought-after wines from Puligny and are models of intensity and balance.” – Jasper Morris MW

(25% new oak): Pale yellow color. Deeper and riper on the nose than the Bienvenues, offering scents of peach, spices, flint and menthol. Also fatter and sweeter than the Bienvenues, but at the same time saline and savory. This very rich wine is surprisingly harmonious today but has the reserves to age for a long time. With its almost tannic finish, this impressive Batard shut down in the glass.

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru hails from a small parcel just below the Marquis de Laguiche's Montrachet holdings, and it's also performing beautifully. Offering up a lovely bouquet of pear, orange oil, white flowers and clear honey that's framed by a deft touch of oak, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with a deep and layered core, lively acids and a long, expansive finish.

Glowing primrose. Immediately a nose of majesty, more demonstrative than the Bienvenues, a substantial block of pure deep white fruit, significantly more weight and power in a chiselled white block. It really depends on what you want between these two. Time is needed to be sure that the power of the Bâtard will deliver a wine to equal the grace of the Bienvenues.

Fresh colour, lemon and lime, not massive at all in bouquet but I am learning not to expect that chez Sauzet. A broad beamed intensity on the palate, this almost seems uncouth after the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it still has its finesse. A light oatmeal touch from young (but not new) wood, and a great deal in reserve. A fine and impressive wine, though unlike in most cellars in 2022, I am leaning towards the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet today. But this will definitely work! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

Fine pale primrose colour, a nose of both depth and elegance. A suggestion of power in restraint. The palate delivers that burst of energy in harmony with the quintessential grace of Bienvenues. The fruit is on the fresher side yet with a texture that denotes ripeness. It is very persistent, and shows its complexity through the nuances, the wavelets of fresh but ripe yellow fruit which reappear at the finish. From the domaine’s oldest vines, this is really lovely.

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Enseigneres, which sees 15% new oak, has an appealing bouquet with touches of walnut and hazelnut lending a Meursault-like character. The well-balanced palate features clementine and light mango notes. Quite linear and strict, demonstrating fine precision toward the finish. This will be a "correct" Chassagne-Montrachet.

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Enseigneres has a fresh, well defined bouquet with gentle orange blossom and light passion fruit aromas, a little mintiness in the background. The palate is nicely balanced with good concentration from the opening, moderate acidity, harmonious with a fresh, orange rind and quince-tinged finish. A very capable Chassagne to enjoy over the next decade.

Pale green-tinged yellow. Lively aromas of lime, minerals and powdered stone. Among the most classic and least exotic of these 2008s but already quite showy, with lime and stone flavors given cut by bright acidity. Finishes long, bright and energetic. This is built to age.

The 2012 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from grapes stationed at the top of the slope. It has an open, airy bouquet that reveals hints of mint and licorice as it opens up, becoming more exotic with each swirl. The palate is well-balanced, vibrant and complex, certainly evoking a more ostentatious take on the climat with an animated, spicy, mint-tinged finish that fans across the mouth and lingers long after the wine has departed. This tenacious Chevalier-Montrachet brims over with personality and substance, daring to outclass old “Monty”. And you know what? I think it does.

Pale, bright yellow. Aromas of citrus fruits and rose petal. At once fine-grained and urgent, with harmonious citrussy acidity giving lift to the lemon-lime and floral flavors. Superb mineral energy partly makes up for the wine's lowish acidity (3.7 g/l). Really saturates the mouth and echoes on the finish, without leaving any impression of weight and echoes. Boudot believes that this wine will be good at every stage of its evolution.

The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from bought-in grapes sourced from the upper sector. It has a fragrant, floral bouquet with dandelion scents filtering through the citrus fruit, although I actually prefer the gung-ho aromatics of the Bâtard by comparison. The palate is very well balanced with a slightly honeyed texture on the entry. There is a lovely spicy undertow here, and an intense lemongrass-infused finish that lingers 45-plus seconds in the mouth. Very fine. Four barrels produced.

Bright, light yellow. Discreet nose offers scents of flowers and iodiney minerality; not at all exotic for Montrachet from a warm, sunny year. Then superripe and rich on the palate, conveying an almost oily concentration to its flavors of ripe apricot and mandarin orange enlivened by brisk citrus notes. With two grams per liter residual sugar, this wonderfully smooth, seamless wine comes across as deceptively easygoing. There's nothing austere about this beauty, which finishes with slowly mounting length.

This is sufficiently reduced that the nose is tough to properly assess. The broader-shouldered flavors possess an almost painful intensity with plenty of muscle and mouth coating sap that manages to adequately buffer the slightly warm and youthfully awkward finish. I suspect that this will ultimately come together with 5-ish or so years of bottle age but it's not clear that it will ultimately surpass either the Bâtard or the Chevalier.

Don't Miss! This is also aromatically restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the aromas of layered and cool spicy essence of pear, apple, white peach and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate density to the borderline massive flavors that also possess a highly seductive texture while displaying stunningly good length on the balanced and mouth coating finish. As is often the case with this wine, it will need time to develop better depth, but the track record is so good that it is all but guaranteed to do so.

Mid lemon yellow. This has the weight which should have. The nose does indeed speak of Montrachet with a measured opulence. The weight on the palate transcends those which have gone before, there is a grip from the barrel and a little toast (a new Chassin barrel and one year old François Frères). Very long and relatively fine finish. Extremely good. Tasted: October 2021

There is even better volume as well as size, weight and density to the muscular and super-compact big-bodied flavors that display huge length on the borderline tannic finish. A pure clear lemon colour. The extra weight of Montrachet is indeed apparent on the nose. Ripe pears. Perhaps this is a little less in the Sauzet style, not being from their own fruit, but it is impressive. The weight on the palate is profound, with certainly ripe fruit but also a point of minerality right in the middle, and good acidity. Almost a wine to eat rather than drink. It does indeed have the requisite very long finish. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: October 2023.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (96-98)

The 2023 Montrachet Grand Cru showed a little more cloudiness in the glass due to the lees (of course, they will disappear once racked). Perhaps the nose is a little primal as a result—it's not as complete as the Bâtard or the Bienvenues. The palate is more indicative of where this Monty will be heading. It has intense, immense weight with an almost pixelated mineral-driven finish. This is going to be a great Montrachet, but it might take longer to reveal its true identity. Only six barrels were produced this year.

Very pale color. Slightly deeper-pitched than the Puligny villages, offering scents of peach and almond flower. Suave and fine-grained; a step up in concentration from the village wine, with more material and mineral presence to buffer its acidity. Finishes classically dry and persistent. This premier cru is firmly built but should nonetheless be accessible fairly early for its freshness and juicy minerality.

Like the aromatics, the palate is beautifully defined and reminds me of Domaine Leflaive in style. The spiciness hits the back palate, hints of lemongrass linger in the mouth after this Les Combettes has departed. Classy but compact at the moment, so do not begrudge cellaring this for 3-5 years.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)

Mid lemon yellow. This has the weight which should have. The nose does indeed speak of Montrachet with a measured opulence. The weight on the palate transcends those which have gone before, there is a grip from the barrel and a little toast (a new Chassin barrel and one year old François Frères). Very long and relatively fine finish. Extremely good. Tasted: October 2021

Don't Miss! A wonderfully spicy nose combines notes of exotic tea and wood with a plethora of floral elements and white peach scents. There is even better volume as well as size, weight and density to the muscular and super-compact big-bodied flavors that display huge length on the borderline tannic finish. While most competent examples of Montrachet clearly need extended cellaring but this is very definitely a 'buy and forget you own it' wine that should be stunningly good in time.

Six barrels made, from small millerand grapes every year. A lime touch to the mid lemon colour. There is class and elegance here, stylish with some dancing minerals. A little touch of wood behind with some cinnamon, but not interfering. The fruit refines further with some fresh granny smith apple notes, and stretches out to an excellent finish. Distinguished and lively, balanced all the way through. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2022

Subtle aromas of white peach, apple, spices and leesy hazelnut. Silkier and more elegant than the Hameau de Blagny, offering a lighter touch and more nervosité. A floral element adds lift. Finishes smooth and long, with subtle fruit intensity and very good cut.

A surprising degree of green to the colour. A light but fine bouquet, all quite discreet, then rather more fruit intensity on the palate, quite linear but not without a little flesh on the bones. Apples washed with lime. Fine and elegant finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

Vestiges of post-bottling sulfur don't completely mask the otherwise elegant citrus, white pear and acacia blossom aromas. The detailed, intense and concentrated medium weight plus flavors possess excellent drive on the refined, pure and strikingly long finish. As is often the case, this classy effort takes best in show for the Sauzet 1ers in 2016.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet, less expressive than the other cuvées, but a few swirls reveal intense mineral-driven malic fruit.
