Frank Cornelissen
About Frank Cornelissen
Frank Cornelissen is a Belgian-born winemaker who has become a leading player on the Etna wine scene. The unique terroir of the Mountain, the name given to the volcano by the local population, has been studied and shaped by the experimental genius of Cornelissen. Since 2001, his unique and expressive wines have become treasured items for wine lovers all over the world. His approach to vine cultivation is based on the idea that man lacks an understanding of the complexity of the universe and is unable to interpret nature and its internal balances. Any treatment or intervention is therefore seen as a violent and desperate attempt to impose his own understanding on the higher forces of nature, which is why Frank has chosen to avoid "any chemical, traditional, organic or biodynamic treatment".
Many of Cornelissens’s vineyards have extremely old, ungrafted Nerello Mascalese vines, they are scattered like little gems along the entire northern slope of Etna, between 650 and 980 metres above sea level.

Vinous (95)The entrancing 2019 Munjebel Rosso FM (Feudo di Mezzo Sottana) blossoms in the glass, with a dusty mix of sweet minty herbs and bright cherry complemented by a hint of cinnamon sugar. Its textures are like pure silk slowly draped across the palate, creamy, smooth, yet lifted and refined, delivering ripe red and hints of blue fruit under an air of lavender and violets. A pleasant inner sweet lingers on, along with a coating of fine tannins, as residual acids and hints of sour citrus maintain a lovely balance. The word “radiant” comes to mind and stays with me throughout the entire experience. Bravo. The Munjebel FM is a 100% Nerello Mascalese produced from the lower elevations of the Feudo di Mezzo cru. This is pure class. |
