Vinous (95)It’s hard to put down a glass of the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. This youthfully restrained yet remarkably pretty wine trades power for undeniable elegance and refinement. It’s dark and moody at times, bright and focused on radiant fruits at others. Layer after layer of crushed black cherry, woodland herbs, autumnal spice, mint leaf, cedar box and earth resonate in the glass. Its silky textures coat all that they touch in a mix of dark red berries and salty minerals, turning dry and structured toward the close under an air of inner florals and earth tones. It will be some time before the 2015 is ready, but I hope to be able to revisit this when it is. Tasted twice with consistent results. |

James Suckling (99)The complexity and beauty of this wine is something else on the nose, offering perfume, cedar, dried flower, black cherry, blueberry and crushed stone. Orange peel, too. Full-bodied with incredible layers of ultra-fine tannins that give this wine horizontal depth that almost seems endless. Extremely long and lightly chewy at the end. This is one for the cellar. Try after 2026. |

Vinous (93)The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Ginestreto takes things to a more classic place with dried strawberries, dusty florals, cloves and nuances of worn leather. It washes across the palate with a textural wave of ripe red and black fruits, supported by brisk acidity, as a salty core of minerals and fine tannins slowly saturates. The 2019 finishes structured and long, reminding me more of Brunello than Rosso, while leaving hints of licorice and minty herbs to linger on. The Ginestreto impresses once again with its amazing combination of fruit, acid and structure that promises many years of positive evolution. |
