FUTO
About FUTO
Established by brothers Tom and Kyle Futo, originally of Kansas, FUTO Estate was one of the very rare new producers to physically open a winery in Oakville - virtually every parcel of land capable of cultivating grapes has been planted here, so winemakers must buy existing vineyards at eye-watering premiums. This land is expensive for a reason, however, and the numerous micro-terroirs found within the FUTO vineyards constitute what former general manager Joshua Lowell called "the tenderloin region of Cabernet Sauvignon" - i.e. the sweetest spot in all the region.
Despite being a relatively young estate (founded in 2002), the brothers were keen that FUTO not simply be labelled as "one to watch". Instead, they invested considerable time and money ensuring that every vintage has been truly excellent. Naturally, techniques and methods can be improved at even the most historic estates of the Old World but make no mistake - FUTO wines are the real deal, not trail runs for bigger and better things to come.
As the immediate neighbour of Harlan Estate, FUTO often draws comparisons between itself and the producer considered by many to be Napa's unofficial "First Growth" - quite the competition! It is no small compliment, then, when critics universally agree that FUTO's range more than holds its own against the legendary Harlan but can be secured at a substantial discount.

James Suckling (99)This is luxurious red for the vintage with velvety tannins that give it superb depth and richness. Lots of tile, dry earth, clay and chocolate. Full-bodied, but almost weightless in the sensibility of the wine. It goes on for minutes. Lovely dried oranges and savory, fruity and forest-floor character at the end. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc, 4% petit verdot and 2% merlot. Unfined and unfiltered. Drink in 2025. |
