2013 |
Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2013 (1x75cl) Vinous (94+)Bright medium red. Knockout high-pitched aromas of red berries, peony and orange peel. Boasts compelling subtle density and sharp definition to its taut flavors of blackberry, violet, licorice, spices and minerals. In its juicy sappiness, this is like chewing on a ripe cherry. A classic Bonnes-Mares, offering superb volume without any undue weight. And an outstanding example of what phenolically ripe fruit could make in this cool vintage.

Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 (1x75cl)
In Bond: £2,424.00
|
2019 |
Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 (1x75cl) Vinous (96-98)The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru includes around three-quarters whole bunch fruit and is matured in one-third new oak. Despite the small reduction on the nose, there is clearly impressive intensity in this Grand Cru, but it is more backward and more broody than the 2018 tasted from barrel 12 months earlier. With time, there are traces of iodine and Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins that frame the pure blackberry and bilberry fruit, awash with superb salinity that gets the saliva flowing. Certainly a more intellectual Bonnes-Mares, it gains depth and density toward a finish that feels exceptionally long on the aftertaste. God created wine so that Christophe Roumier could make fermented grape juice like this.

Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)
|
2020 |
Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl) Vinous (96-98)The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru contains around 65% whole bunch. This has wonderful precision on the nose, very perfumed and floral at first though with time those scents of crushed limestone and oyster shell start percolating through. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, pitch-perfect acidity, bursting of energy and tension with a judicious touch of spice on the finish. This is hauntingly beautiful.

Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1985 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (85)The Villages Chambolle-Musigny has good length, a supple, charming ripeness and berry fruitiness, and should age well until 1991-1992.

1995 |
Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses 1995 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (93-95)I am hardly alone in believing that the Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses deserves to be upgraded to a Grand Cru. Roumier's 1995 offering is a persuasive example of this vineyard's potential. Dark ruby-colored, it explodes from the glass with powerful scents of dark berries. A spectacular wine, it is packed with blueberry flavor. Long and intensely elegant, this full-bodied gem should be cellared for 5-8 years and consumed over the following 10-15 years - a true vin de garde. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided.

2008 |
Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 2008 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)Dark cherry and its pits and tart skin; black raspberry with its seeds; cumin and mace seem to be electrically charged in the Roumier 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras, with musky floral, savory red meat juice, and crushed stone dimensions on a firm palate adding riveting complexity. There is a certain textural austerity and restraint of sheer ripeness here, but what a concentrated ball of energy we have, making for a finish of spine- as well as tongue-tingling length! Look for at least 12-15 years of stimulation from this.

2017 |
Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 2017 (1x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of morello cherry, wild strawberry and just a touch of graphite. This is strict and backward, yet very focused, and the oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, displaying fine tannins, superb mineralité and beautifully integrated oak, and delivering good body and persistence on the finish. An excellent Chambolle-Musigny with real pedigree. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

2019 |
Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 2019 (3x75cl) Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru was showing a little more reduction than the Les Combottes, though not much, allowing black fruit laced with crushed stone and iris flower to emerge with aeration. The palate is beautifully defined with succulent, vibrant red and black fruit, hints of blood orange and a subtle irony tincture toward the graceful finish. An outstanding Les Cras. Just superb.

2005 |
Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 2005 (12x75cl) Vinous (90)Good medium red. Dark raspberry, coffee and spicy oak on the nose; this wine's flamboyant ripeness almost came as a shock following the more reticent 2006s. Big, round, plush and ripe, with spicy dark raspberry and chocolate flavors and considerable density for village wine. Quite smooth and harmonious at the moment: Roumier volunteered that this is not as closed yet as he expected it would be.

2009 |
Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 2009 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Combottes presents an intriguing and inviting melange of dark red cherries, mint, licorice and spices. There is wonderful depth to the fruit as the wine continues to open up in the glass. This is a decidedly dark, powerful style of Chambolle, but it works, and quite beautifully, too. It will be interesting to see the direction the Combottes takes over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

2011 |
Georges Roumier Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussiere 2011 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (85)Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Morey Saint Denis Clos de la Bussière from Christophe Roumier has a rather dense bouquet with blackcurrant pastilles, dried herbs, sous-bois and stemmy scents that become more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a stern entry. There is a tinny tincture in the mouth, the finish missing the complexity of a premier cru, the aftertaste spicy with a dash of black pepper. I have to be honest, this did not put in a good performance and I was not the only taster to criticize this wine before its identity was revealed.

2014 |
Georges Roumier Musigny Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (95)The 2014 Musigny Grand Cru taken from the full barrel, not the feuillette, which is how much Christophe Roumier has this year. It has a crisp, mineral bouquet with black fruit, and there is a touch of graphite developing with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, with the oak showing a bit more here than the Amoureuses; it is quite powerful and dense on the finish, with a touch of white pepper and dried blood on the aftertaste. Of course, it is a very fine Musigny, although I suspect that the Bonnes-Mares and the Les Amoureuses 2014 may ultimately bestow more pleasure. But hey, are you really going to turn it down if someone offers you a glass?
