    Georges Roumier

Domaine Roumier began as a wedding gift in 1924 when a local girl from Chambolle-Musigny married Georges Roumier. The present day sees Christophe Roumier at the helm achieving considerable regard and esteem for this top-tier domaine. Sparing use of new oak and a deft hand for green harvesting and pruning has led to expressive, nuanced wines which are rightly prized by collectors the world over.

    1993

    Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 1993 (1x75cl)

    Vintage Tastings (96)

was a gorgeous example of 1993 but also actually rich in fruit, even more so than the bottle I had four days prior at CRU with Allen at a Roumier dinner (who's in charge of scheduling??? Oops, that's me). The nose was full of rich, red, vitaminy fruit; make that a symphony of red, purple and black fruits. Vibrant, fresh and long, its nose was incredible and had secondary earth aromas. The palate was so 1993 with its wave of t 'n a, cedar, leather and earth. It was still a baby, but what a baby, oh, baby...I better stop

    Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2002 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2002 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a wine that I have met for five years. Examining my previous note, this seems to have meliorated in recent years, displaying outstanding transparency on the nose, more mineralité than the 2002 Les Cras poured alongside (also blind). Perhaps there is a little more black fruit here than I was expecting. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful structure: filigree tannin, pitch-perfect acidity and superb tension from start to finish. There is a hint of balsamic towards the finish that I remarked upon a few years ago, but overall this is a wonderful Bonnes-Mares that unfurls with each passing moment in the glass. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in Hong Kong.

    Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2005 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96-97)

Roumier vinifies separately and later assembles the fruits of white chalk and red (iron-rich) parcels that inform his 2005 Bonnes Mares. At the time of my visit he had retained one pure barrel of each component as an investigation into terroir and the results were as fascinating as the blended wine is fascinatingly and profoundly beautiful. The ferrous lot (55% of the final assemblage) displays ripe blackberry and raspberry berries, along with (red soil-born) pungent smokiness, Chartreuse-like herbal and floral essences. A liqueur-like presentation of black fruits temporarily overshadows the mysterious (white rock-born) meld of chalky minerality and beef marrow that wells up gradually on a creamy palate with tannins of utmost refinement. The tension and energy are riveting – lending the wine a dynamic, fleet-of-foot impression for all of its manifestly huge extract – with incisive brightness of palate-staining fruit and vibrant minerality leading to a finish of sensational clarity and length. Even here, by the way, Roumier employs only around 40% new wood.

    Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2008 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2008 Bonnes Mares is a huge, intense wine endowed with tons of fruit, but wrapped around a powerful, focused frame. The tannins are big, but also beautifully integrated. This towering Burgundy will require an extraordinary amount of patience before revealing its true pedigree, but it is clearly magnificent.

    Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2010 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95-97)

The 2010 Bonnes-Mares is explosive and totally exciting. A big, broad-shouldered frame supports a core of black fruit, mint, flowers and licorice in this powerful, massively structured wine. Here, too, it is the wine's energy and focus that truly stand out most. The finish turns weightless and totally sublime. As usual, I tasted the Bonnes-Mares from its two main components, and then in the blend, and it was the blend that was most convincing of the three wines. The 2010 Bonnes-Mares is a wine built for a long rest in the cellar before it begins to approach the early part of what promises to be a long drinking window.

More youthful colour than many – mid garnet. Intriguing complexity with some violet notes. Really gorgeous breadth and balance with fruit and freshness. Still obviously gaining in interest and very long. Really smooth and with wonderful depth and persistence. The best 2011 so far in this tasting of top wines from that vintage. The sort of wine every burgundy drinker wants to find. Went on for a good minute…

    Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was showing quite a lot of reduction on the nose when I visited (Christophe Roumier was taken aback, as it had been racked three weeks earlier). Fortunately, the palate shows great potential; it’s as beautifully balanced as ever, with a fine bead of acidity. This is more understated and less outgoing than other vintages encountered from barrel, and not quite as persistent on the finish, but with a fine dash of black pepper on the aftertaste. There is something very assured about this Bonnes-Mares, though this year, it is Les Amoureuses that sends tingles down the spine.

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a level up in terms of intensity, offering layers of black cherry and blueberry fruit; this could only come from this particular vineyard. Wonderful precision and quite floral. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grip, succulent tannins and a very saline finish. A very intense Bonnes-Mares, almost overwhelming toward the finish at this premature juncture, though the persistence has to be felt to be believed.

    Vinous (96-98)

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru includes around three-quarters whole bunch fruit and is matured in one-third new oak. Despite the small reduction on the nose, there is clearly impressive intensity in this Grand Cru, but it is more backward and more broody than the 2018 tasted from barrel 12 months earlier. With time, there are traces of iodine and Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins that frame the pure blackberry and bilberry fruit, awash with superb salinity that gets the saliva flowing. Certainly a more intellectual Bonnes-Mares, it gains depth and density toward a finish that feels exceptionally long on the aftertaste. God created wine so that Christophe Roumier could make fermented grape juice like this.

The 1989 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with lovely floral/incense and iris aromas that combine beautifully with the black cherry and boysenberry scents, a little iodine emerging later. The palate is very well balanced with good depth, again quite floral in style with supple tannin. Maybe it lacks the elegance of the 2002 Les Amoureuses but it feels velvety smooth and offers just perfect salinity on the finish that makes you coming back for another sip. For me, this outflanks the 1989 Bonnes-Mares. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Roumier dinner in Hong Kong.

The 1994 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is an odd wine in what I feel was not Christophe's finest year. It has a strange exotic nose whilst the palate is rustic and meaty, fully matured with an uncharacteristically coarse finish that does not really translate the quality of the vineyard. Obviously I have no idea if heaven exists, but if it does, I am pretty sure the wine being served is Amoureuses, and it might very well be Christophe Roumier's stratospheric 2012. The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses has an exquisitely defined bouquet, a touch of shucked oyster shell infusing the red cherry and blackberry fruit, as well as hints of cassis developing in the glass. The palate is crisp and taut, with fine acidity and crisp tannin; it is linear and so energetic on the finish, this has to be one of the best wines of the vintage. It is a wine that can barely contain its talent and it is sure to give so much pleasure over the next 20-30 years. This is simply awesome.

The palate bowls you over, subtle at first à la Mugnier and then there is a wave of blackberry, bilberry and pomegranate fruit infused with wondrous mineralité and a killer, precise finish that is nigh perfection. Dark cherry and its pits and tart skin; black raspberry with its seeds; cumin and mace seem to be electrically charged in the Roumier 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras, with musky floral, savory red meat juice, and crushed stone dimensions on a firm palate adding riveting complexity. There is a certain textural austerity and restraint of sheer ripeness here, but what a concentrated ball of energy we have, making for a finish of spine- as well as tongue-tingling length! Look for at least 12-15 years of stimulation from this.

The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière is tightly-wound on the nose with blackberry, raspberry, hints of singed leather and spice. I appreciate the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, chalky in texture with a grip and certainly impressive focus on the finish. This is an excellent Morey-Saint-Denis. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Georges Roumier Musigny Grand Cru 2008 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2008 Musigny Grand Cru, which was vinified with 100% stems, has a bright, clear ruby core with thin bricking on the rim. The refined, characterful nose displays superb definition, offering cranberry and raspberry fruit, crushed rose petal and a leafy component that becomes more pronounced with aeration. You could argue that the stem addition juts out a little, perhaps exaggerated by its juxtaposition against the 2007 Musigny, although I can abide that facet. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit on the entry, plenty of sous-bois and saline characteristics and plenty of depth. It does not possess the opulence of the 2007; it is more a Musigny that wears its heart on its sleeve. I concur with Tanzer’s observation that the stems have not fully assimilated into this wine, and after a decade, I suspect they never will. Yet this is still a thoroughly enjoyable if not fault-free wine. Tasted in November 2018 at the Roumier Musigny dinner at Épure in Hong Kong.

was a gorgeous example of 1993 but also actually rich in fruit, even more so than the bottle I had four days prior at CRU with Allen at a Roumier dinner (who's in charge of scheduling??? Oops, that's me). The nose was full of rich, red, vitaminy fruit; make that a symphony of red, purple and black fruits. Vibrant, fresh and long, its nose was incredible and had secondary earth aromas. The palate was so 1993 with its wave of t 'n a, cedar, leather and earth. It was still a baby, but what a baby, oh, baby...I better stop

The palate is very well balanced with good depth, again quite floral in style with supple tannin. Maybe it lacks the elegance of the 2002 Les Amoureuses but it feels velvety smooth and offers just perfect salinity on the finish that makes you coming back for another sip. There is a certain textural austerity and restraint of sheer ripeness here, but what a concentrated ball of energy we have, making for a finish of spine- as well as tongue-tingling length! Georges Roumier Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussiere 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)
