Grand Puy Lacoste

Château Grand-Puy Lacoste is owned by Francoise-Xavier Borie and it’s blessed with stunning grounds. This is one of the most loved and sought after Pauillac estates, because it combines great terroir with affordable wines. This wine consistently outperforms its 5eme Grand Cru Classé classification and it was one of the first Bordeaux Chateau to sell well in Asia. The 55 hectare vineyard of Grand Puy Lacoste is planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc was not always planted at the estate. In fact, for much of their history, only two grape varieties were planted, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vineyard is basically in one large block on the hill of Pauillac. It is a classic style, tannic and concentrated. Not as weighty as some but it has great flavour and purity.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. I raved about the 2006 Château Grand Puy-Lacoste when I tasted it from barrel ten years ago. It has evolved a really quite beautiful, very classic Pauillac bouquet with vivacious blackberry, raspberry and wild mint aromas that deftly absorb the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, perhaps a more forward GPL than other vintages, but there is genuine fineness to the tannin and that backward finish has great precision. There is the substance to suggest that it will be a long-term Left Bank and you could probably broach it after another 3-4 years. Tasted January 2016.

Individual judge’s scores: SB 18.5 AG 18.5 SS 19 Like Haut-Batailley, this excellent property is owned by the Borie family and managed by François-Xavier Borie. Its 55 hectares are planted with vines with an average age of over 40 years, ensuring moderate yields and good concentration of fruit. This has long been a favourite of many claret lovers, since it offers classic Pauillac typicity – vigorous, muscular and long lived, with considerable elegance – at a fair price. It is hard to think of any disappointing vintages, and this consistency also wins it admirers. SB Seductive, oaky black cherry and cassis nose. Rich, sumptuous and concentrated without being too extracted. Robust and spicy, already showing considerable nuance and complexity. It’s forward and fleshy, but doesn’t lack grip and structure. Harmonious, with well-judged tannins. AG Ripe black cassis and hedgerow fruit on the nose. Powerful and enticing. Seamless on the palate with rich, lush fruit backed by ripe but firm tannins and excellent balancing acidity. Lovely structure and a real sense of potential for the future. Fresh and elegant. SS Very fine, fragrant black berry fruit, showing great purity and elegance in the Pauillac range. Wild violets and beautiful texture. A beautiful wine, totally harmonious, and with all the elegance you need for a long future.

Full-bodied, rich, deep, plush and polished, the wine feels good on your palate and tastes even better with a fresh, fruit-filled finish of blackberry and another big splash of juicy cassis. These guys often over-deliver in challenging years, and have done so yet again. As you would expect in a vintage that has produced such an excellent Lacoste Borie, this GPL is exceptional, a real success that's juicy and carefully extracted. It has weight and impact, with a Pauillac tannic hold and presence. It's one of my wines of the vintage, and a must buy. The balanced, sculpted, juicy black fruits fully deliver personality and signature style. Harvested 15-29 September, yielding 45hl/ha. 80% new oak.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2019 Grand Puy Lacoste is deep purple in colour. Initially the bouquet is tight and so I left my sample for 15-20 minutes to open. It rewards patience with a beguiling mélange of pure blackberry, raspberry, crushed violet and pencil shavings, very focused and mineral-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins. Compared to the robust, tannic GPL's of old, this is much more lithe and approachable, yet it still bears the DNA of this Pauillac estate. It might not possess the flair of other 2019 Left Banks, but that it is not what I seek from this estate. Classy and full of breeding - quintessential Pauillac.

This is a beautifully fresh wine with lovely, juicy black cassis flavours. The day-night temperature changes of up to 20 degrees centigrade made a huge difference to the quality of the tannins, and GPL has some of the steepest slopes and best draining soils in Pauillac to cope with the wet early season (although this also meant some blockage of young vines during the drought). Overall they have produced a plush, easy drinking wine that offers great pleasure. 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with a yield of 50hl/ha.

Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2013 (6x75cl)

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (90-92+)

The 2013 Grand Puy Lacoste is terrific. Graphite, smoke, tobacco and licorice burst onto the palate, followed by layers of dark, inviting fruit. Supremely classy from start to finish, the 2013 impresses for its energy, balance and pure, mineral-driven cut. The 2013 is by no means a huge wine, but it is super-polished to the core. Tasted twice.

Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2014 (12x75cl)

Jeff Leve (93-95)

Spill a bottle of cassis in your grandfather’s cigar box and you will replicate the fragrance of this wine. Full-bodied, rich, deep, plush and polished, the wine feels good on your palate and tastes even better with a fresh, fruit-filled finish of blackberry and another big splash of juicy cassis. With 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot in the blend, the wine reached 13.5% alcohol and represents 60% of the harvest. 93-95 Pts

Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2015 (12x75cl)

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (92-95)

A rich, super-finessed wine, the 2015 Grand-Puy-Lacoste brings together the ripeness of the vintage and classic elegance of Pauillac in stunning style. Today, the 2015 is gloriously ripe and intense, with fabulous follow-through and remarkable balance. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, exotic, spice and blood orange hit the flamboyant finish. This is one of the wines of the vintage. Don't miss it. Tasted four times.

Ripe, but sleek and very focused, featuring racy iron and savory notes coursing alongside the core of black currant and black cherry fruit. The fresh finish keeps everything in lockstep. Well-built.

This captures the style of the vintage to a T, with vividly ripe cassis and plum fruit, carried by solidly built but fine-grained structure. Lots of graphite and tobacco accents hang in the background for now. A firmly grounded wine.

Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2019 (3x150cl)

Lacoste Borie 2016 (12x75cl)

Decanter (90)

This is a beautifully fresh wine with lovely, juicy black cassis flavours. The day-night temperature changes of up to 20 degrees centigrade made a huge difference to the quality of the tannins, and GPL has some of the steepest slopes and best draining soils in Pauillac to cope with the wet early season (although this also meant some blockage of young vines during the drought). Overall they have produced a plush, easy drinking wine that offers great pleasure. 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with a yield of 50hl/ha.
