Grand Puy Lacoste
Château Grand-Puy Lacoste is owned by Francoise-Xavier Borie and it’s blessed with stunning grounds. This is one of the most loved and sought after Pauillac estates, because it combines great terroir with affordable wines. This wine consistently outperforms its 5eme Grand Cru Classé classification and it was one of the first Bordeaux Chateau to sell well in Asia. The 55 hectare vineyard of Grand Puy Lacoste is planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc was not always planted at the estate. In fact, for much of their history, only two grape varieties were planted, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vineyard is basically in one large block on the hill of Pauillac. It is a classic style, tannic and concentrated. Not as weighty as some but it has great flavour and purity.

This is a beautifully fresh wine with lovely, juicy black cassis flavours. The day-night temperature changes of up to 20 degrees centigrade made a huge difference to the quality of the tannins, and GPL has some of the steepest slopes and best draining soils in Pauillac to cope with the wet early season (although this also meant some blockage of young vines during the drought). Overall they have produced a plush, easy drinking wine that offers great pleasure. 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with a yield of 50hl/ha.Inc. VAT£225.12 -

This is bright, with extremely well-placed, juicy blue fruits with coffee touches, and a gorgeous sense of energy. It's a definite buy in this vintage, and should be great value. Technical director Christel Spinner has done a great job of delivering a focussed, finessed wine. I wouldn't wait too long to enjoy this, as it already has lots to enjoy. Vinous - Antonio Galloni (89-92)
The 2018 Lacoste-Borie is plump, silky and absolutely delicious. Bright red cherry, plum and mocha add lovely shades of nuance throughout. I would prefer to drink this succulent, mid-weight Pauillac over the next handful of years, while it retains its youthful juiciness. The 2019 Lacoste-Borie was impressive as a barrel sample sent to my home last spring. Now in bottle, it has a vivacious, quite floral, almost Margaux-like bouquet that bursts from the glass, featuring raspberry, rooibos and black currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with good concentration, a little spicier than I remember and a little softer in the finish, yet with good length and admirable harmony.
