Giuseppe Rinaldi
About Guiseppe Rinaldi
Guiseppe Rinaldi is a revered producer of Barolo in a traditional style. The wines does not pander to fashion and the late Giusepper himself once said he doesn’t want his wines to please easily. Using organic farming and intense study the winery - now run by Giuseppe's daughters Marta and Carlotaa - produces wine that is well perfumed, powerfully structured and slow to mature.

Wine Advocate (95+)First introduced in 2019, we now have our second edition of this exciting wine from Giuseppe Rinaldi. The 2020 Barolo Bussia is a wine of strength and power. The Rinaldi family has 1.3 hectares in Bussia, of which 3,000 square meters are Dolcetto and the rest are Nebbiolo. Carlotta Rinaldi tells me that this new project came with a steep learning curve because clay and marl soils have a harder time drying out and getting the tractor through can be a challenge. They had leased the property in 2019 and were able to buy it in 2022. Waves of new plantings over very deep terrain came in the 1940s, the 1960s and the 1980s. That thicker soil profile contributes to the dense constitution of this Barolo. There are vines at the top of the hill with full southwest exposures and there are vines at a lower elevation. This wine represents a selection of the top part, to achieve this medium-plus texture, the bold tannic profile and these age-worthy qualities. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)Good bright, deep red. Crushed blackberry, cassis and violet on the nose, plus notes of game and bitter chocolate; like a blend of serious Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanee. Offers compelling purity, sweetness and depth of fruit, with a powerful acid structure giving the mid-palate a perfumed quality and carrying the juicy fruit through a resounding, rising finish. There's great back-end grip here without any impression of austerity, thanks to the ripeness of the year. This is incredibly primary for juice that's been in barrel for nearly two years, but keep in mind that it won't be bottled for another 18 months. Still, it's likely to be a knockout. (I also tasted a very pure and vibrant sample of Brunate, which was a sour cherry fruit bomb with a liqueur-like ripeness supported by powerful spine, but I was not able to try the barrel of Le Coste.) |

Vinous (95)The 2009 Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo/Ravera emerges from the glass with sweet red berries, leather, licorice, menthol and sweet spices, all supported by fine, silky tannins. It's captivatingly ethereal and elegantly structured, offering crushed strawberry, red cherry, cinnamon and white pepper. It's also impeccably balanced thanks to firm polished tannins and bright acidity. While it's already extremely tempting, hold for even more complexity. Drink 2023–2043. |

Vinous (93)The 2014 Barolo Tre Tine is nervous and tightly wound, with good precision and a bit more austerity than is the norm. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014, although I suspect the wine will always be a bit aggressive because of the effects of hail. Wine Advocate (95)This wine celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2016. Representing its 99th birthday, the 2015 Barolo Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from Ravera (60%), Le Coste (20%) and Cannubi San Lorenzo (20%). These sites encountered some challenges with hail in the 2014 vintage that resulted in a 30% loss of fruit. The Rinaldi family saw hail in the Brunate and Cerequio area in 2016. But the 2015 vintage saw smooth sailing and what winemaker Marta Rinaldi calls a return to normalcy. She says fermentations proceeded beautifully and without any holdups. This Barolo opens to a medium-dark garnet color with bright fruit tones followed by licorice, tar and delicate balsam herb. The wine offers a degree of softness that comes through in the quality of the tannins and the texture of the mouthfeel. |

Vinous (95)The 2019 Barolo Tre Tine is elegant and gracious to the core. Lifted, sensual aromatics make a strong first impression. In most vintages the Tre Tine has been a bit more tannic, but the 2019 has a level of refinement that I have not seen in the past. Rose petal, kirsch, lavender, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and orange peel lend striking inner sweetness and perfume. The 2019 is classic in feel, but not at all forbidding or austere. I loved it. |

Wine Advocate (95)This is a celebrated blend of mostly Ravera with 30% to 35% Cannubi San Lorenzo and 5% Le Coste. The Giuseppe Rinaldi 2020 Barolo Tre Tine is still tight and narrow at this young stage, but it will surely flesh out with more time in bottle. There are delicate fragrances of tart berry fruit, cassis and blue flower over a streamlined and very silky mouthfeel. The Ravera vineyard near the winery measures three hectares across two distinct parcels. The first piece that faces Le Coste was planted in the 1980s, and the second parcel that looks toward Novello was planted in the 1990s. |

Vinous (93+)(an 80/20 blend): Light-medium red. Exotic, slightly decadent, old-style aromas of roasted strawberry, truffley underbrush, tar and brown spices. Suave on entry, then creamy in the middle, with red cherry and strawberry flavors complicated by slightly funky but fascinating porcini and earth tones. Marta describes the Brunate-La Coste as more austere, blacker wine but this 2009 is atypically gentle in the early going, even if there's plenty of ripe tannins to support a leisurely evolution in bottle. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (99)A wine of mind-blowing complexity, Rinaldi’s 2010 Barolo Brunate is everything Barolo can be—powerful, refined, seductive, intensely aromatic, structured and so incredibly beautiful that words seem inadequate. It opens with soaring notes of rose petal, iron, coffee, mint, white pepper, melted road tar, spice and orange peel. Youthfully tannic and structured, the 2010 has softened a bit since its very early days, but it remains quite young. The obvious question is: Is it ready? Yes and no. Readers who have a bottle or two may want to wait another five years or so. Those fortunate enough to own a little more may want to dip into their stash. One thing is certain: Beppe Rinaldi’s 2010 Barolo is an absolute masterpiece, a testament to a brilliant career. |
