Sweet scents of pear, apple and peach. A very lively Bourgogne Blanc with enticing cut and surprising energy to its fruit-driven flavors. Shows the acidity of a cooler terroir if not quite the mineral tension of the superb 2014 version. These vines are all in Meursault, mostly on the Volnay side on deep, clay-based soils. (Roulot rented his old Les Boucheres vines on SO4 roostock to Dominique Lafon when he signed a fermage agreement for this parcel with the same new American owners who also purchased the Clos de la Baronne and other holdings that made up the ex-Domaine Rene Manuel): Musky lemon oil and zest complicated by hazelnut; this could only be Meursault. Fat, sweet and oily, with excellent density and grip preventing the flavors of lemon, lime and flowers from coming across as heavy. The lemon oil character energizes this wine from start to gripping finish. Suave and long, with noteworthy verve for this site, which has a tendency to ripen its fruit very quickly.

Bright light yellow. Strong oak in evidence in the form of high-toned curry spice. Musky and sweet; the richest to this point of these 2013s, but with healthy balancing acidity. The oak adds an element of texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine's stone fruit flavors. Finishes chewy yet light on its feet. Roulot did a bit of lees stirring in 2013 at the end of the fermentations but not afterwards.

The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières looks set to rank as one of Jean-Marc Roulot's all-time greats, and while it is still youthful, its incredible potential is already clear to see. A classic bouquet of citrus zest, white flowers, chalky soil tones and blanched almond introduce a searingly intense wine that marries striking cut and vertical tension with wonderful glossy amplitude and dimension, its tongue-tingling minerality persisting through the long, penetrating finish. The 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is firmly shut down, offering up only a reticent bouquet of iodine, toasted nuts and citrus oil. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and bright but decidedly taut, playing its cards very close to its vest. From barrel, this was the most intense and concentrated wine in Roulot's cellar, with immense potential, but given how closed the wine is today, there is really no point pulling corks for a good five years.

The 2014 Meursault Village is mainly fruit from Clos de la Baronne supplemented by three smaller parcels that represent around 20% of the final blend. It has a brisk, stony, slightly reserved bouquet with touches of Granny Smith, granite and limestone. The palate is fresh and lively on the entry with a keen thread of acidity, and a slight bitter edge that appears on the mid-palate but coalescing nicely towards the tender finish. You will find few Meursault Village as good as this (apart from down the road at Coche perhaps).

The palate is well balanced with green apple and freshly sliced pear, showing fine transparency and tension on the elegant finish. This is as good a Bourgogne Blanc as you will find.

One to look for.

Jean-Marc Roulot’s 2016 Bourgogne Blanc is absolutely delicious. Fresh and vibrant, with lovely complexity in its peer group, the Bourgogne Blanc pairs beautifully with the early courses on this menu. I save a bit for later for the cheese, as I especially adore white Burgundy with cheese. Even after several hours, the 2016 is gorgeous.

As the best examples of Perrieres always do, this just oozes class, minerality, sophistication and refinement. Powerful and explosive aromas burst from the glass yet there is nothing heavy or forced and the flavors display awesome intensity as this just etches itself into the palate and stains it as well. The length was so good that I could taste this the next morning and the complexity is literally stunning. Another genuinely great Roulot Perrieres.

Bright, bright yellow. Subtle aromas of orange oil, honey and vanillin oak. At once sweet, silky and energetic, with intense yellow fruit, saline and honey flavors supported by a strong mineral underpinning. Finishes with palate-saturating minerality and terrific length. Roulot told me that he used a new Damy barrel with a different toast and that it resulted in a rounder wine.

A benchmark example of Roulot's singular style.
