About Château Haut-Bages Libéral
Drawing its name from the Liberal family, well-known negociants in Bordeaux and owners of other properties on the Left Bank who purchased the estate in the 18th century, Château Haut-Bages-Libéral is located on the hills of Bages, a tiny area between Pauillac and Saint Julien which makes up the second part of its name. From the 1960s onwards, it was managed by the Cruse family who also owned Château Pontet-Canet, and for a few years, wines of Château Haut-Bages-Libéral were actually made at Château Pontet-Canet. Château Haut-Bages-Libéral was then sold to the Taillan group in 1983, which owned several properties including Château Ferrière and Château de Camensac and has remained under the same ownership till today.
The vines of Château Haut-Bages-Libéral span over 30 hectares, half of which is located in Bages with other parcels located near highly regarded estates like Château Latour and Château Pichon Baron. Certified organic since the 2019 vintage, the wines of Château Haut-Bages-Libéral continue to improve, delivering excellent value.

It has an elegant bouquet of refined black cherry and crushed strawberry aromas; the oak here is very well knitted. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannin, layers of black fruit laced with tar and tobacco, and firm but not overbearing grip on the finish. Good aging potential here. Excellent. A rush of dark red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, blood orange, incense, licorice and mocha saturates the palate. Saline notes extend the mid-palate and finish effortlessly. This is one of the most exuberant, ample wines I have tasted from Claire Villars-Lurton. I would give the 2022 a number of years in bottle to shed some baby fat. Today, it tastes almost like a barrel sample! The purity and primary intensity of the fruit is remarkable. The Haut-Bages Libéral was raised in a combination of 40% new oak, 40% once-used barrels and 20% a mix of concrete and amphora. This is one of the under-the-radar gems of 2022. |

In many vintages, Haut-Bages Libéral is a bit more pliant and inviting, but the 2023 is a wine that is going to need time to come around. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of black fruit, leather, lavender, licorice, incense and gravel. The 2023 was aged for 16 months in 40% new barrels, 40% once-filled barrels and 20% in a mix of amphora and concrete ovals. I can't wait to see how this ages. |
