Henri Boillot
The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.
The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.
Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

Vinous (94-96)I tasted the 2012 Bâtard-Montrachet from two different barrels, Seguin Moreau and François Frères, which is the standard cooper here. The Seguin Moreau barrels brings out the more floral, perfumed side of the wine, while the François Frères gives more volume and texture. In both barrels, what emerges is a gorgeous, beautifully layered wine that is perhaps not quite as opulent today as the Bienvenues, but striking all the same. What stands out most is the wine's length and persistence. |

Vinous (95)Compared to the premier crus at this address, this wine offers another dimension on the nose, with aromas of pear, white flowers, almond and hazelnut complemented by deeper-pitched soil tones and a hint of dried fruits. Hugely rich but surprisingly energetic on the palate, conveying seamless flavors of yellow and dried fruits and salty minerality. Totally saturates the mouth and mounts on the back end without leaving any impression of heaviness. Boillot told me that the 2017 version of this wine is a bit higher in acidity but this bottle boasts excellent verve. |

Wine Advocate (95+)The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, honeycomb, white flowers, orange oil and wheat toast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and muscular, with lively acids and an impressively structured, introverted profile for the vintage, concluding with a long, saline finish. |

Decanter (96)From a 0.32ha parcel that straddles the line between Puligny and Chassagne, beginning at the bottom of the slope and running up to the top, to give a complete slice of the vineyard. Despite the heat in 2019, the Boillot Bâtard retains a citrus note on the nose and a bright, ripe apple fruit character without heaviness. On the palate, there is depth of flavour and a richness of texture that is rewarding and perfectly balanced. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)Mid lemon yellow. There is a slight reduction to the nose. All the weight appears on the palate with a gorgeously sensual deep white fruit, not heavy at all. White pepper. There is no sign of the reduction on the palate. An exceptional example with more tension at the back, great potential for the long term. Guillaume Boillot has dialled down to 50% new wood here and that is plenty. Tasted: 10/1/2021 |

Burghound (95)Here too the nose is quite restrained with its admirably pure aromas of red cherry, dark currant, spice and earth along with notes of violet and lavender. I very much like the sense of underlying tension to the succulent, indeed even juicy, medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the tautly muscular and firm finish that flashes just a hint of youthful austerity. This isn't quite as complex as the Chambertin but it's close and it may well close the gap over time as this is also very clearly structured for mid to even longer-term keeping. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is beautiful, mingling notions of red plums and raspberries with hints of rose petals, orange rind and warm spices, framed by a deft application of new oak. Vinous (91-94)The 2021 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is another attractive wine in this range from Boillot. This is a decidedly small-scaled Bonnes Mares. - Antonio Galloni |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)Two suppliers covering both terroirs. Ultra-intense imperial purple. There is a seductive first wave of the bouquet which I find each year here and love every time. Super ripe in 2020 with a little touch of minerals graphite behind. This dances on the palate, not as heavy as the start would suggest, slightly drier tannins, but the balance still works. Tasted: 10/1/2021 |

Vinous (93-96)(a single new 228-liter barrel): Bright pale yellow. Knockout nose combines white peach, nectarine, crushed rock and white pepper, with spicy oak in a complementary role. Penetrating, savory flavors of lemon, lime, peach and crushed stone convey an impression of power without weight. Really terrific fruit and mineral intensity here. The slightly phenolic finish features superb building length. An outstanding expression of terroir. |

Vinous (93-96)Bright light-medium yellow. Very sexy, quintessential Chevalier nose of citrus fruits and white peach, crushed rock and ginger, plus an element of smoky oak. A wonderfully glyceral wine with a powerful salty impression of extract and strong supporting acidity. Finishes chewy and very long, but without any excess weight. Juicy lemony cut gives this wine a distinctly crystalline quality. A classic Chevalier-Montrachet in the making. This and the Bâtard are in 100% new oak, while the Pucelles, Clos de la Mouchère and Combettes are around 50%, but Boillot notes that the larger (350-liter) format of his barrels is very important. |

Burghound (97)(Don't Miss!) A discreet but not invisible touch of wood sets off the notably more floral-suffused aromas of citrus confit, exotic tea, anise and white peach. The gorgeously textured large-scaled flavors possess outstanding cut and minerality that contrasts with the exceptionally dry, austere and massively long finish. This strikingly pure effort is packed with potential but note well that it's not likely to be a wine that permits early accessibility. In sum, this is a classic Chevalier in the making, but patience will absolutely be required. |

Vinous (93-96)(the crop level here was in the healthy 30-to-35-hectoliters-per-hectare range; entirely destemmed, as with the Chambertin, as Boillot was concerned that the stems were a bit green): Healthy dark red. Reticent, slightly medicinal aromas of cherry, flowers, spices and stone. Compellingly silky, fine-grained wine with terrific punch and lift; more explosive on the palate in the early going than the Clos Vougeot and classier too. Finishes refined and very long, with rather delicate tannins and terrific subtle flavor intensity and lift. This wine aged in 100% new oak but is not marked by the wood. It should enjoy a long life in bottle but there's nothing hard about it today. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is a pretty and beguiling wine. All of the nuance and character of Bèze is present, but with less volume than in most vintages. Hints of Griotte cherry, crushed rose petals, spice and blood orange extend the finish nicely. - Antonio Galloni |
