Henri Boillot
The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.
The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.
Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

Wine Advocate (95+)The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, honeycomb, white flowers, orange oil and wheat toast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and muscular, with lively acids and an impressively structured, introverted profile for the vintage, concluding with a long, saline finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: December 2023. |

Burghound (95)Here too the nose is quite restrained with its admirably pure aromas of red cherry, dark currant, spice and earth along with notes of violet and lavender. I very much like the sense of underlying tension to the succulent, indeed even juicy, medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the tautly muscular and firm finish that flashes just a hint of youthful austerity. This isn't quite as complex as the Chambertin but it's close and it may well close the gap over time as this is also very clearly structured for mid to even longer-term keeping. |

Wine Advocate (95+)Another of the highlights of the range is the 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a striking wine that soars from the glass with notes of raspberries, red berries, rose petals, sweet spices, violets and forest floor. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with striking cut and definition, concluding with a long, mineral finish. This is an exquisitely refined Bonnes-Mares that is worth a special effort to seek out. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is beautiful, mingling notions of red plums and raspberries with hints of rose petals, orange rind and warm spices, framed by a deft application of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, bright and concentrated, it has lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, elegantly chalky finish. Fine-boned and vibrant, this has turned out very well indeed. |

Vinous (91-94)The 2021 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is another attractive wine in this range from Boillot. Medium in body and nicely lifted, the Bonnes Mares has plenty of energy, if not quite the depth or textural resonance of the very best years. This is a decidedly small-scaled Bonnes Mares. - Antonio Galloni |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)A crimson ruby. A little wilder than the Chambertin duo, a little plummier, softly ripe raspberries, a range of interesting complex aromatics. Builds fascinatingly on the palate, possibly a higher pH but thoroughly rewarding, with a complex texture as well, multi-layered, and very long. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Oct 2024. |

Vinous (95+)Bright, dark red. Deep, brooding, very closed nose of black fruits, licorice, violet, spices and pepper. Layered, dense and concentrated, with classic cool-year inner-mouth tension and energy. The black fruit flavors are given a distinctly taut quality by strong framing acidity. Best today on the rising, penetrating, extremely long finish, which saturates the palate with remarkably sweet, harmonious, fine-grained tannins and leaves the salivary glands quivering. Great savory density and verve here without any undue impression of weight. The crop level was just 25 hectoliters per hectare, according to Sebastien Boillot. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)More purple and less ruby compared to Beze. A greater depth of fruit, more layers to it. I loved the vigour of the Clos de Bèze but this has more of a natural majesty. Profound, with a silky texture on top of a hard rock Chambertin. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted Oct 2024. |

Vinous (93-96)(the crop level here was in the healthy 30-to-35-hectoliters-per-hectare range; entirely destemmed, as with the Chambertin, as Boillot was concerned that the stems were a bit green): Healthy dark red. Reticent, slightly medicinal aromas of cherry, flowers, spices and stone. Compellingly silky, fine-grained wine with terrific punch and lift; more explosive on the palate in the early going than the Clos Vougeot and classier too. Finishes refined and very long, with rather delicate tannins and terrific subtle flavor intensity and lift. This wine aged in 100% new oak but is not marked by the wood. It should enjoy a long life in bottle but there's nothing hard about it today. |
