Henri Gouges
About Domaine Henri Gouges
Domaine Henri Gouges’ wines are always built to last and are a cornerstone for any serious cellar. Production is small and, no matter what the vintage, demand is always high. The Gouges family established the current domaine in Nuits-St-Georges in 1919 and they still have a few bottles from their first vintages in the 1920s. Now joined by the next generation, Gregory Gouges, the historical house style is slowly changing and we found it more focused on the fruit rather than on the oak allowing the vineyards to show their distinct personalities.

Vinous (87)The 1996 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a broody and herbaceous nose, and a little green around the edges, becoming pastille-like with aeration. The palate is fresh with pointed, sharp acidity, gentle in terms of grip but this fades alarmingly on the finish. This suggests it is running out of puff so drink up! Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte. |

There is a trademark leafiness that develops towards the firm, structured finish with traces of black tea on the aftertaste. Give this another two or three years in bottle. Wine Advocate (93+)The 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets Saint Georges is—like the Vaucrains—already beginning to shut down, gradually unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, currant leaf, rich spice and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine's fine-grained tannins take center stage for the moment, but its depth, concentration and energy are all very promising: the only missing ingredient is time. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Bottled yesterday! A vibrant fresh mid purple. Lots of energy too on the nose. Perhaps seems a little richer after yesterday’s bottling, which may have slightly muddied the waters - but this is clearly a good wine with plenty of dark red fruit and a good thread of acidity. The tannins are gentle. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: November 2022 |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru had been racked the previous week, but it was essentially the final wine I tasted as it was just about to be bottled. It has a stricter and more backward bouquet than the Chênes Carteaux: blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the 20% new oak neatly folded in. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, leaning more towards black fruit laced with tar and tobacco. Quite Morey-like towards the finish with impressive persistence. Give this two or three years in bottle to shave the edges. Very fine. |

Wine Advocate (93+)The 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers stands in contrast to the suave and elegant 2017 rendition. Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)Deep red-ruby. Deep but reticent aromas of noteworthy complexity: dark berries, minerals, roast meat and truffle. Big, broad, sweet and filled in; a seamless wine of grand cru volume. One senses the wine's minerality in its structure more than its flavors. Finishes very long and suave, with strong tannins perfectly buffered by middle-palate richness. This will be bottled in March with about 12.9% alcohol. |

Vinous (94+)Jonnson mentions he has a few reds that aren’t on the list, including the 2001 Gouges Les Saint-Georges. That’s another obvious Yes! I absolutely adore the Gouges wines, especially with some bottle age. Two thousand one is a vintage of reticent, tightly wound Burgundies that have been slow to mature. Frankly, I thought the 2001 Les Saint-Georges would be a bit more forward. Instead, it is bright, aromatically intense, and super-structured, with even more youthful intensity in its red-toned fruit than I expect. Readers who own it should be positively thrilled. What a wine! |
