Hubert Lignier
About Hubert Lignier
Domaine Hubert Lignier is a historic Morey-Saint-Denis estate. The domaine was founded in 1880 when Jacques Lignier purchased plots of vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the 1960s the domaine was expanded to 8ha. Today the domaine is managed by the father and son partnership of Hubert and Laurent Lignier, who make 24 different wines at all levels of classification. Wine-making here is described by William Kelley (Wine Advocate) as “classical”.
It is fair to say that Domaine Hubert Lignier flies just a little below the radar screen of many more casual Burgundy fans. But to those in the know, their flagship Clos-de-La-Roche Grand Cru is one of Morey-Saint-Denis’s hidden gems. And their other Grand and Premier Cru expressions are surprisingly (for Burgundy) affordable wines.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87)Bottled three weeks ago. 13.25% alcohol. Bright mid-purple. Good energy on the nose, more discretion than some, though with a plump sucrosity on the palate. Sending different signals between the discretion and the eventual sucrosity, but these should harmonise.! Excellent length. Tasted: November 2021 |

Wine Advocate (91-93+)Aromas of cherries, sweet wild berries, peonies, blood orange and sweet soil tones introduce the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes, a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine with a textural attack that segues into a layered, vibrant mid-palate and finish. From a small parcel near Bonnes-Mares, this is routinely one of Lignier's finest premier cru bottlings, and the 2018 is no exception. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru has a lovely menthol-tinged bouquet, redcurrant and cranberry, light tertiary notes developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, white pepper and cumin. Lovely balance here, the new oak is well integrated. Just a pity, only two barrels were produced. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)The holding is in the angle at the northern end of the vineyard, where Laurent has had a nice little wall in dry stone built. Dark black colour with light purple rim. As ever, this is much more Morey than Chambolle. Rich deep dark fruit with its typical savoury edge, dark raspberry notes, a little plum, flavours which reach far to the back of the palate. Succulent and savoury together and very persistent. 13.25% alcohol. Tasted: November 2021 |

Vinous (88-90)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chabiots 1er Cru comes from vines planted in 1997. It has a well-defined bouquet of brambly red fruit laced with lavender and rose petal aromas. The palate is well balanced and, being completely de-stemmed, shows an engaging fruité on the candied finish. Probably more for short-term enjoyment than Lignier’s other Premier Crus. |

Burghound (89-92)Reserved aromas of various dark berries, spice and a plethora of floral elements can be found on the ripe but airy nose. The wonderfully refined medium-bodied flavors possess very good concentration as well as good length on the youthfully austere and slightly lean but not angular finish. My projected range offers the benefit of the doubt that this will flesh out with time in bottle. (89-92)/2032+ |

Wine Advocate (89-91)The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières includes a small proportion of whole bunch fruit. It has a harmonious bouquet with red cherries and pomegranate aromas. I appreciate the definition and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and crunchy red berry fruit, very natural in style, pure and tensile with a dash of spice on the finish. This should give ten years of pleasure, possibly more. |

Vinous (87-89)(from purchased fruit from the lieux-dits Les Drazey and Les Gamaires; Lignier does the vineyard work): Bright medium red. Urgent aromas of cranberry and fresh strawberry accented by crushed stone. Juicy, spicy and pure, conveying a touch of rocky minerality and good minty lift to its red berry flavors. Finishes with a firm spine of tannins. I might have identified this very firm village wine blind as a 2014. |

Very fine. |

Wine Advocate (93)The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was raised entirely in new oak. It is aromatically not a million miles away from the Aux Combotte 11 tightly wound and a little timid on the nose at first and demands coaxing. It reluctantly reveals quite intense wet limestone scents that dominate over the red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine grip on the entry with the oak lending it a smooth veneer. Harmonious and focused, it glides to quite a sinewy finish that needs a couple of years to fully integrate the wood. Very fine. Drink 2016-2028. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2013 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from the Mazoyères sector, has a very well-defined and quite intense bouquet with live-wire red cherry and strawberry preserve underpinned by zingy citrus fruits. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and plenty of sorbet-fresh red fruit that build toward a composed but energetic finish. No, not quite as thrilling as the 2012 tasted alongside, but surely one of the finest examples of this vineyard. |

Wine Advocate (97-99)The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is matured in 30% new oak with up to 30% whole cluster fruit, two-thirds from Montluisants and one-third Fremiers. It has an intoxicating bouquet that is extraordinarily complex: shimmering red berry fruit, blood orange, incense and a touch of crushed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, wonderful depth and harmony, laser-like focus toward the finish that lingers in the mouth. Stunning mineralité here—the tongue feels as if it licked limestone 30 second after the wine has disappeared. If there is a better Clos de la Roche then I have not tasted it (yet). |
