Hubert Lignier
About Hubert Lignier
Domaine Hubert Lignier is a historic Morey-Saint-Denis estate. The domaine was founded in 1880 when Jacques Lignier purchased plots of vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the 1960s the domaine was expanded to 8ha. Today the domaine is managed by the father and son partnership of Hubert and Laurent Lignier, who make 24 different wines at all levels of classification. Wine-making here is described by William Kelley (Wine Advocate) as “classical”.
It is fair to say that Domaine Hubert Lignier flies just a little below the radar screen of many more casual Burgundy fans. But to those in the know, their flagship Clos-de-La-Roche Grand Cru is one of Morey-Saint-Denis’s hidden gems. And their other Grand and Premier Cru expressions are surprisingly (for Burgundy) affordable wines.

(100% destemmed; La Riotte is adjacent to Les Blanchards but these vines are on more of a slope, and the mostly clay soil also features some rocky calcaire): Healthy medium red. More complex on the nose than the Blanchards, with raspberry and musky coffee aromas complemented by sexy soil tones and a floral element. Less fat and dense than the Blanchards, but its sappy raspberry fruit shows lovely mineral tension. Finishes precise, cool and long.Inc. VAT£725.52 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru has a tender bouquet with red berry fruit, crushed limestone and rose petal aromas, more Chambolle-like than Morey. The palate is quite rich and generous, nicely structured, sweet towards the finish that manages to disguise the 14.7° alcohol. If you desire one of Domaine Hubert Lignier’s more heady 2019s then this is the place to come.Inc. VAT£908.00 -

The 2008 Morey St.-Denis Les Chaffots is a sexy, powerful wine. This is a beautifully intense Morey layered with exquisite fruit. The tension between the fruit and the tannins keeps things interesting as the wine turns a bit dark on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.Inc. VAT£204.53 -
Vinous (92+)
Healthy medium red. Reduced aromas of raspberry, smoke, brown spices and dried flowers. Rich, dense and harmonious, showing a lovely sugar/acid balance and noteworthy mineral-driven energy. Finishes firm, chewy and long, with a complicating saline quality. This is 13.2% alcohol without chaptalization, according to Laurent Lignier.Inc. VAT£158.52 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has (another) very well defined bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and sous-bois aromas, a little stemminess in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, impressive depth, but what underpins this premier cru is the freshness and tension on the finish. It should age with style. Superb.Inc. VAT£789.12 -

Vinous (89)
Medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, cranberry, blood orange and mint turned slightly high-toned and exotic with air. Juicy and a bit herbal in the mouth, with flavors of cranberry and pomegranate supported by pronounced saline minerality. Delivers a strong overall impression of small wild red fruits. Two thousand thirteen was a bit like 2008 but with less sun and more rain at the end, noted Laurent Lignier.Inc. VAT£90.53 -
Vinous (88-90)
(about 25% of the fruit was lost to frost): Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Quite open and aromatic on the nose, offering scents of black cherry and flowers. Nicely concentrated, sappy wine with a subtle sweetness to its flavors of cherry and black raspberry. This fruit was entirely destemmed but the wine finishes linear and firmly tannic, with good saline persistence.Inc. VAT£92.65 -
