    Hudelot Baillet

    Domaine Hudelot Baillet

Based in Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Hudelot-Baillet was founded in 1981 by Joël Hudelot after inheriting some vines from his parents Paul Hudelot and Chantal Baillet. Joël retired in 2004 and left the Domaine in the hands of his son-in-law, Dominique Leguen, who had been working at the estate since 1998 and has done an amazing job crafting wines that offer astounding quality to price ratios. Only reviewed by the Wine Advocate from the 2012 vintage onwards, Domaine Hudelot-Baillet is a lovely hidden gem that was uncovered by Neal Martin (Vinous) entirely by chance, as he relates:

“I chanced upon the wine at “The Sampler” in London when the name was little known. I was instantly taken with the wines and had been meaning to visit the winery since that time.”

    Neal Martin (Vinous)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has a precocious bouquet with layers of opulent blackberry, cassis and redcurrant fruit, crushed violets bursting from the glass. This does not hold back. The palate is sweet and velvety smooth on the entry, fine tannins that frame the intense black cherry and cassis fruit with a judicious touch of spice towards the finish. Afford this 5-7 years in the cellar to tame its precocity.

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, from vines planted in 1930/1931, comprises of two barrels this year. The nose was closed when we met, broody blackcurrant and blueberry scents, a bit reduced. The palate is more expressive with fine tannins, shimmering black fruit, orange zest and Asian spices. This builds in the mouth and fans out, whereas other Bonnes-Mares have come across as relatively skinny. This could turn out to be one of the best from this Grand Cru.

The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics.

    Burghound (92-94)

(from a .123 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated mostly in terres blanches; about 600 bottles are produced each year). A discreet application of oak frames the overtly spice aromas of poached plum, dark cherry and violet. The rich, solidly concentrated and weighty larger-bodied flavors are at once supple yet powerful with a taut muscularity, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent and complex finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. In the context of the 2023 vintage, this is a big wine and one that will need at least moderate patience.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes has a delightful, crisp, delineated, beautifully poised bouquet with fine mineralité and tension. This is a top notch nose. The palate is seamless on the entry, silky smooth and utterly seductive, the acidity well judged. There remains some new oak to be absorbed, but there is plenty of fruit to absorb that with 4-5 years in bottle. This is a top notch vin de garde Chambolle-Musignny and there is not a great number of those this vintage. Tasted September 2016.

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1Er Cru les Charmes comes from vines around 60-years-old. I like the volume and purity here -- just joyful black cherry and cassis fruit with an underlying mineralité that comes through more and more with time. The palate is crisp and slightly chalky in texture, grippy in the mouth, much more masculine that the nose suggests with firm structure imparting linearity towards the lightly peppered finish. This is an excellent Chambolle Charmes that will drink well over the next 8-15 years.

Cropped at a modest 32 hectoliters per hectare, the 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes unfurls in the glass with an enticing bouquet of ripe cherries, dark chocolate, spices and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a textural attack, excellent depth and dimension at the core and velvety structuring tannins. It's a real success in the gourmand style of the vintage.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has an intense bouquet with layers of red fruit, blood orange, brown spices and even a touch of lemongrass (something more normally found on whites, although it does work here). The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins that impart a fleshy mouthfeel. This feels very harmonious and, although there is more new oak to be assimilated, ultimately I feel this will turn into a very serious, more modern style Chambolle-Musigny. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes from two barrels and is aged in 25% new oak. This is much more complex and nuanced on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes: very focused with ebullient red fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with good density on the entry. It's quite structured for a Chambolle with some firm tannins on the finish, but sufficient fruit keeps it balanced and poised.

(from vines planted in 1987, from a .37 ha holding). A perfumed and attractively elegant nose is comprised by aromas of black raspberry, cherry, soft wood and wet stone. Here too the palate impression of the medium-bodied flavors is supple, seductive and succulent while flashing more evident minerality on the lingering if mildly sweet finish that isn’t really intrusive but I can’t say that it appeals to me. To be fair, it’s quite possible that the sweetness will dissipate in time as the oak treatment is more completely integrated.

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from six parcels from around the appellation. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, dark berry fruit mixed with iris flower and a touch of pencil box. A little introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry, quite sweet with a lot of sucrosity. Maybe that detracts from its complexity towards the finish, which tapers when you want it to fan out. It's not bad, but it needs to gain some flesh in the coming months.

(from Fouchères, Les Mombies, Les Babillières, Nazoires, Les Mal Carrées and Les Chardannes). A ripe and quite fresh array combines notes of black cherry with those of spice and an admirably discreet dollop of wood. The succulent and caressing middle weight flavors possess solid volume before concluding in a robust, powerful and slightly warm finish. This is not really in the mode of a lace and grace Chambolle but does offer fine depth and persistence in an age-worthy package. Worth considering.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from six parcels from around the appellation. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, dark berry fruit mixed with iris flower and a touch of pencil box. A little introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry, quite sweet with a lot of sucrosity. Maybe that detracts from its complexity towards the finish, which tapers when you want it to fan out. It's not bad, but it needs to gain some flesh in the coming months.

    Burghound (89-91)

(from Fouchères, Les Mombies, Les Babillières, Nazoires, Les Mal Carrées and Les Chardannes). A ripe and quite fresh array combines notes of black cherry with those of spice and an admirably discreet dollop of wood. The succulent and caressing middle weight flavors possess solid volume before concluding in a robust, powerful and slightly warm finish. This is not really in the mode of a lace and grace Chambolle but does offer fine depth and persistence in an age-worthy package. Worth considering.
