Hugel
About Hugel
Crafting the most fabulous Rieslings in Alsace since 1638, Famille Hugel have had more than enough time to utterly perfect the cultivation and vinification of the most noble white varietal on Earth. Indeed, almost four centuries is long enough to become rather familiar with their terroir, and it is a testament to this family-owned property that their wines display a remarkable lightness of touch and forward-thinking character, far from being dulled by the weight of history.

Vinous (91)Pale yellow-gold. Very perfumed aromas of rose water, grapefruit, cured meat and nutmeg show lovely lift. Clean, precise and not especially opulent, offering spicy flavors of yellow fruit, freshly baked bread and noteworthy inner-mouth perfume. Closes lively and long, with lingering aromatic interest. Does not taste as sweet as the numbers indicate (18 g/L of r.s and only 2.8 g/L total acidity). |

Wine Advocate (95)The golden-yellow colored 2014 Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive is very clear, precise and elegant on the nose that represents a perfect selection of botrytis, but it's also a fruit-fly vintage that always causes a kind of irritation. Ripe peach and sage aromas intertwined with flinty notes on the intense nose lead to a palate that is rich, sweet and savory as well as elegant and saline, finishing highly stimulating despite the richness. Bottled with 11% stated alcohol and 94 grams per liter of residual sugar, this is a long-distance runner. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024. |

Vinous (96)The 2014 Riesling Grossi Laüe is harvested from four parcels across the midslope of the marls of the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru. From a cool vintage, with a cool, rainy summer where the autumn made the vintage. This sends out only gentle notions of chamomile tincture with emerging highlights of clear honey but with an ethereal lift and a lovely smokiness that allows you to stash this way. The palate is serene, gorgeously smooth and emollient with its cooling, soothing, chamomile-scented, fresh gentleness. This is a Riesling like a caress, like a balm, while cooling, healing and soothing. The 2014 is long and understated, just about opening up but perfectly equipped to go the distance, a wine of equanimity and class. (Bone-Dry) |

James Suckling (96)Decadent and rich with mango, papaya, citrus, and mineral. Slate too. Full-bodied, dry and fruity. It really shows great length and complexity. First vintage of this single vineyard wine from the best parcel of the Schonenberg. Contrasty. Drink now. |

James Suckling (96)A very complex rose petal and herbal riesling that is ridiculously fresh for almost a decade of age. Very muscular and concentrated, but still cool and fresh with enormous mineral depth at the finish. Just coming to its peak, but decades of aging potential! |

Decanter (97)The crown in the Hugel jewels, Schoelhammer comes from 30 rows in the core of Grand Cru Shoenenbourg, high above Riquewihr. An intense, dry and mineral-charged Riesling with floral aromas and concentrated lime/lemon zest flavours. Fermented in neutral oak, this retains absolute purity and clarity of flavour. Bottled in Spring 2012, this vintage was first released in 2018. Still very youthful and with decades ahead. |

Wine Advocate (98)Hugel's 2014 Riesling Schoelhammer opens with a clear and remarkably fine and herbal bouquet that indicates perfectly ripe and concentrated fruit that is reminiscent of ripe mirabelles. On the palate, this is a rich and textural, very elegant and refined yet highly complex and long-lasting Schoenenbourg that combines power with incredible finesse. The finish is very long, stimulating and complex due to the remarkably fine saline acidity. This is a stellar Riesling from Alsace, and although I didn't taste it along with the great 2010, I dare say this is possibly the finest Schoelhammer Hugel has produced so far. 13.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024. |
