Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier
About Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier
Frédéric Mugnier, a liquor producer in Dijon, founded the domaine which still bears his surname in 1863, starting with some of the best plots in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Badly hit by the economic crisis in the 1930s, Mugnier sold the liquor business and leased out the vineyards. As the domaine recovered, the estate regained full control of their vineyards after the leasing contracts ended. Coming full circle, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is currently managed by Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation who takes the same name as the founding father of the estate.
The latest plot to return to the estate (in 2004) was Clos de la Maréchale. Spanning some 9 hectares, the Clos de la Maréchale is one of the largest monopoles in Côte d'Or, with an average vine age over 50 years old. With Frédéric Mugnier asserting full control since 2004, his first vintage to be scored was the 2005, which quickly won warm praise from William Kelley.

Bright medium red. Compelling perfume of raspberry, flowers, game and leather, still with a touch of reduction. Tactile and vibrant in the mouth, with complex flavors of red berries, flowers and flint accented by soil and light veggie nuances. Not as thick as the young 2015 but a wonderfully expressive and complete village wine. Finishes saline and sweet, with fine-grained tannins and superb length and soil character. Frederic Mugnier noted that this wine can be kept for a long time but emphasized that it doesn't benefit as much from aging as the crus do.Inc. VAT£517.04 -

Vinous (89-91)
The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Village has an open and very floral bouquet that doesn't explode, rather leaps from the glass: maraschino cherries, blueberry and iris flower. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly edgy tannins, quite citric, very fresh with a touch of black pepper on the finish. Plenty of energy is coiled up in this Village Cru and it cares little that it was denied the length of recent vintages. Very fine.Inc. VAT£1,856.29 -

(from two different parcels of vines, one .56 ha parcel located in the premier cru Les Plantes, which was planted in 1968 and the second from a .77 ha holding in the villages-level portion of La Combe d’Orveau, 60% of which is young vines, and the remainder is 40+ year old vines; the split is about 55% La Combe d’Orveau and 45% Les Plantes). A ripe, fresh and elegant array is comprised by notes of red and dark currant, spice and a violet top note plus an interesting hint of orange peel. The beautifully textured and solidly concentrated medium weight flavors possess a lovely innate tension that carries over to the youthfully austere, balanced, minerally and impressively long finale. This is an excellent Chambolle villages.Inc. VAT£2,080.69 -

A spellbinding bottle of Mugnier’s 1999 Musigny Grand Cru rounds out the evening. So complex and beguiling, the 1999 is at once light on its feet and quite deep, with terrific freshness and breathtaking balance. Aeration brings out further layers of dimension. The 1999 is at times quite cerebral, while in other moments it is more overtly virile. Like all truly great wines, every taste reveal a different facet of its personality. Deep red. Classic aromas of small wild red berries, mocha and underbrush. Broad, sweet and deep-particularly impressive in the context of the vintage-without any loss of clarity or aromatic lift. Wonderfully suave, full wine that's also surprisingly tastable today. Finishes with noble tannins, noteworthy sweetness of fruit and terrific lift. This one should probably be laid down for seven or eight years.Inc. VAT£13,540.84 -
(1x75cl) 2006Vinous (96+)
Deep red with ruby tones. Flamboyantly ripe aromas of black fruits, blood orange, peony and espresso. Huge yet weightless, saturating every square millimeter of the mouth with very ripe dark fruits, minerals and spices. This plush, sweet, extremely unevolved wine is almost monolithic today but the explosive, palate-staining finish suggests that it has a slow and glorious evolution ahead of it. The fruit here was picked with potential alcohol of 13.7%, the same as in 2005.Inc. VAT£2,078.39
