    Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

    About Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Frédéric Mugnier, a liquor producer in Dijon, founded the domaine which still bears his surname in 1863, starting with some of the best plots in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Badly hit by the economic crisis in the 1930s, Mugnier sold the liquor business and leased out the vineyards. As the domaine recovered, the estate regained full control of their vineyards after the leasing contracts ended. Coming full circle, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is currently managed by Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation who takes the same name as the founding father of the estate.

The latest plot to return to the estate (in 2004) was Clos de la Maréchale. Spanning some 9 hectares, the Clos de la Maréchale is one of the largest monopoles in Côte d'Or, with an average vine age over 50 years old. With Frédéric Mugnier asserting full control since 2004, his first vintage to be scored was the 2005, which quickly won warm praise from William Kelley.

Less saturated red. Deeper pitched, briary aromas of blueberry, tar, mocha and strawberry jam. Fat, lush and velvety; the sweetest '97 to this point, but a bit low in acid and high in alcohol. The Amoureuses is finer and more complex.

Bright full red. Very ripe, expressive aromas of roasted strawberry, mocha, cocoa powder and pepper. Lush, silky and fat; a very rich, dense Bonnes-Mares with a Bordeaux-like texture and lovely harmonious acidity. Doesn't offer the charm of Chambolle but this very solid wine has a strong tannic backbone for aging.

Good medium red. Complex, pure nose combines black raspberry, blackberry, herbs, mocha, licorice and rose petal. Very tightly wound today, even a bit lean, and hiding more than itÂ’s showing. Highly perfumed flavors of blackberry, licorice and fresh herbs. Finishes with very firm tannins and excellent length. Less sweet than the Chambolle samples, yet harmonious from the outset. I may be underrating this. Half of these vines were replanted in 1987, as Mugnier replaced a large-berried, thin-skinned clone that was particularly sensitive to rot.

The 2003 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an attractive bouquet of red berry fruit, hoisin, undergrowth and very light peppermint aromas that is fresher than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a lactic, chocolaty entry. It is missing the cohesion one usually finds with this cru, although there is good depth and a smudged, cocoa-tinged finish that comes across like a guilty pleasure. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London.

(from a blend of 60% white and 40% red soil, says Mugnier) Bright, medium red. Perfumed nose of blueberry, mocha and crushed stone. Plush on entry, then wonderfully fresh in the middle and less plump than the Fuees, with terrific stony verve and mineral intensity to the crushed black fruit flavors. Very broad on the back end. This will rely more on its serious tannins than on its acids for longevity-and it will require at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring.

The 2008 Bonnes Mares is totally mesmerizing, seductive and haunting; in essence it has all of the qualities that make Burgundy so endlessly fascinating. Soft and ethereal on the palate, the Bonnes Mares exudes tons of vintage character in its perfumed dark fruit. The wine literally floats on the palate all the way through to the eternal finish. This is a dazzling effort. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.

Good medium red. High-toned, liqueur-like aromas of blackberry, blueberry and smoky underbrush. Densely packed and broad, showing the sappiness and great energy of the vintage. Black raspberry fruit is complicated by iron and mocha notes. The dense finish features slowly rising persistence and surprisingly smooth tannins. The 2015 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is excellent, opening in the glass with notes of peony, ripe cherries, briary fruits, potpourri, dark chocolate and coniferous forest floor—more wild in profile than Mugnier's other wines from Chambolle. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and deep, with impressive power and a long finish. This is quite a dramatic Bonnes Mares by Mugnier's standards, and the only criticism one could make is that it doesn't possess the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes his Amoureuses and Musigny. Discussing his Bonnes Mares, Mugnier notes that half of the vineyard was replanted in 1988 and a quarter in 1980. As these young vines reach age 30, he observes, they have become more Chambolle in character.

In the middle of the vineyard. Terres rouges and terres blanches. Small parcel so assembled from the start. Barrel sample. Seductive aroma but in a much richer style than the Clos de la Maréchale. Smells deep and seductive. A perfume I would love to be enveloped in. Sour red cherry and a touch of orange as well as floral. Complex and expressive. Beauty of fruit purity on the palate, like biting into a perfect red cherry, crunchy but sweet and tangy. The tannins are spicy and refined. A complete wine with succulence, fine-boned structure and intensity though not apparently dense.

Pale cherry-red. Tighter, higher-pitched aromas of cherry, strawberry, gunflint and spice; clearly fresher than the normale and the Fuees. Supple and sweet in the mouth, with spicy, fresh red fruit flavors. This offers much better clarity than the normale and the Fuees. Fresh on the finish, with finer, softer tannins. Lovely understated Chambolle. Perhaps Mugnier's most successful '95 and the best value by a wide margin.

Palate-staining finish features black raspberry and mineral flavors and suave, thoroughly buffered tannins.

Medium red. Lovely perfumed nose offers raspberry, rose petal and minerals as well as hints of darker black cherry and blueberry. A distinct step up in density from the foregoing 2004s; silky, scented and almost lush for the year. Compellingly perfumed and vibrant wine. Finishes broad and long, with strikingly sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume (a rapid succession of sensations is the way Mugnier puts it).

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureses is sweet, layered and totally beautiful. At the same time, it is pretty clear the wine has already begun to shut down. With time in the glass, some of the typical weightless energy of Amoureuses comes through, but despite its considerable appeal, the wine is showing only a fraction of its ultimate potential. I imagine the 2009 will enjoy a long drinking window once it awakens from its current slumber. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

One of the clear highlights in the range, the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is simply dazzling in the way it captures both the essence of site and the pure richness of the vintage. Layers of perfumed, silky red-fleshed fruit built to a gracious, textured finish full of the resonance and pure depth that is so typical of the year. Mugnier served the Amoureuses last among his 2012s in this tasting at the domaine, and it showed beautifully, even after the Grand Crus.

The 1996 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses was ethereal in its menthol, eucalyptus and pure ripe fruit. It was a totally seductive wine from start to finish.

Bright red-ruby. Ripe, deeply spicy red fruit and mineral aromas. Superconcentrated and ripe, but with sharply defined, penetrating red fruit and mineral flavors. Every bit as dense as the Bonnes-Mares but finer and more vibrant. Offers an uncanny combination of texture and pure stony cut.

Bright, dark red. Pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, minerals, rose petal and flinty stone. Wonderfully suave on entry, then vibrant and sappy in the middle, with pungent raspberry and crushed stone flavors boasting outstanding density and freshness. Mounts impressively on the back half, finishing with outstanding lift and perfume and broad, fine-grained tannins that reach the front teeth. Exciting wine.

The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is endowed with an explosive bouquet and a multi-dimensional, textured core of dark fruit. The inner palate sweetness, richness and nuance here are all breathtaking. The finish seems to last into the next day. This is another spellbinding effort from Mugnier.
