    Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

    About Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Frédéric Mugnier, a liquor producer in Dijon, founded the domaine which still bears his surname in 1863, starting with some of the best plots in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Badly hit by the economic crisis in the 1930s, Mugnier sold the liquor business and leased out the vineyards. As the domaine recovered, the estate regained full control of their vineyards after the leasing contracts ended. Coming full circle, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is currently managed by Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation who takes the same name as the founding father of the estate.

The latest plot to return to the estate (in 2004) was Clos de la Maréchale. Spanning some 9 hectares, the Clos de la Maréchale is one of the largest monopoles in Côte d'Or, with an average vine age over 50 years old. With Frédéric Mugnier asserting full control since 2004, his first vintage to be scored was the 2005, which quickly won warm praise from William Kelley.

Good medium red. Cool, slightly herbal but highly aromatic nose offers black and blue fruits, violet and licorice. Sweet, silky and perfumed, with surprisingly expressive flavors of dark fruits, chocolate and mocha. Fat but fresh, finishing with ripe, chocolatey tannins. This deceptively approachable wine will probably shut down in bottle.

The 2001 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is ageing nicely with 17-years now on the clock. It has a comely, well-defined bouquet that is endowed with the subtle exoticism you seek from this prestigious Premier Cru: red fruit, hints of balsamic, wild mint and forest floor. It has a slight melted quality, yet very harmonious. The palate is well balanced and conveys a sense of natural elegance. There is fine weight in the mouth and it actually coalesces and gains body with aeration, its component parts slotting together to form a smooth, slightly gamey finish. What a great wine and maybe just approaching its peak. Tasted at Empire restaurant in Hong Kong.

Deep ruby-red. Inky aromas of cherry, minerals and shoe polish. Juicy but very firm in the mouth, with briary dark berry, black cherry, mineral and herbal flavors. Currently lacks real pliancy, yet the firm tannins hit the palate quite late. Seems a bit tough today, perhaps due to the recent sulfuring. A second barrel showed more middle-palate fruit.

Good deep, medium red. Reduced on the nose. Then sappy, full and rich in the mouth, with a restrained sweetness. It's tricky to see the clarity here, as this rather austere wine needs the aeration of a racking. But certainly finishes with good ripe tannins.

Bright red-ruby. Sexy red berries, minerals and flowers on the perfumed nose. Silky, sweet and very ripe; quite full and lush for this wine, with perfectly integrated acidity. This really saturates the mouth with intense red fruit, mineral and floral flavors. Finishes very long, with wonderfully suave tannins. Very sexy now, but this has to shut down, doesn't it?

    Vinous (89-91)

Deep ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of blackberry and minerals, with a suggestion of mint. Dense and juicy in the mouth; a more refined and minerally version of the village wine, with excellent intensity to the black fruit flavors. Finishes with building, youthfully firm tannins. Mugnier noted that he had no hail damage in 2006 but had to eliminate rotten grapes at harvest time. He does this in the vines as he does not own a sorting table (it's not a good solution, is the way he puts it).

The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées is a weightless, effortless wine graced with sensual fruit and a soft, sensual finish. Dried flowers and mint linger on the finish. This is at once relatively open for the year, yet also a touch fleeting. It's hard to envision the Fuees as a long-term wine, but then again, Mugnier's wines are deceptive.

More complex aromas of strawberry, smoke, minerals, truffle and coffee. Larger-scaled and riper in the mouth; also considerably fresher than the Bonnes-Mares. But backward today, and faintly medicinal on the finish. The tannins build with aeration. This will need time.

Jacques Frederic Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru 1999 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96+)

Mugnier's 1999 Musigny Grand Cru is still a very youthful wine, but a few hours' decant gives a more than adequate sense of its immense quality. A beautiful bouquet of raspberries, black cherry, cocoa powder, violets, peony and incipient notes of rich soil and cedar introduce a pure, full-bodied wine with pitch-perfect balance and a deep, spherical core of ripe tannin, juicy acidity and reserved concentration. This is not an especially flamboyant wine, but it's incredibly authoritative and sophisticated; and in another decade, it will be just irresistible.

Jacques Frederic Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru 2001 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Full medium red. Compellingly fresh, complex nose combines wild raspberry, minerals, smoked meat and mint. Wonderfully fine-grained and sappy, with its red berry, coffee and leather flavors conveying a distinctly youthful character. Boasts a terric spine of firm, integrated acidity and suave tannins and builds slowly and steadily on the rising finish. Great class here. Frédéric Mugnier recalled that he was quite happy with the quality of the 2001 tannins at the beginning and that he loves this vintage. The wines were always very pretty but now they show more structure, he told me. He added that he would still wait longer to drink this wine for more complexity and polish.

Wonderfully suave, full wine that's also surprisingly tastable today. Finishes with noble tannins, noteworthy sweetness of fruit and terrific lift. Wine Advocate (96-98)

The youngest of the vines informing Mugnier’s 2005 Musigny just reached forty. This explodes from the glass with aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, red currant, marzipan, diverse bitter-sweet florals and citrus zest. In the mouth, there is a palpable sense of sheer density yet weightlessness (once again putting me in mind of a great, red Riesling!) Almost implosively fresh fruit concentration is layered with tactile notes of citrus zest and chalky minerality, veal-stock richness, pungent spices, and an armload of flowers. (The 2004, incidentally, is effusive and juicy in personality, with superb penetration and refined length.)

Deep red with ruby tones. Flamboyantly ripe aromas of black fruits, blood orange, peony and espresso. Huge yet weightless, saturating every square millimeter of the mouth with very ripe dark fruits, minerals and spices. This plush, sweet, extremely unevolved wine is almost monolithic today but the explosive, palate-staining finish suggests that it has a slow and glorious evolution ahead of it. The fruit here was picked with potential alcohol of 13.7%, the same as in 2005.

Jacques Frederic Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru 2007 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2007 Musigny Vieilles Vignes from J-F Mugnier shows modest bricking, looking a little more mature than the other four 2007 Grand Crus, with vestiges of brambly red berries on the nose. An initial dustiness blew off, while a touch of balsam never quite dislodged itself and marginally obscured the terroir. The laid-back bouquet never kicks on and flourishes in the glass, unlike other wines that eventually made its aromatics seem a little staid. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a firm backbone and fine grip, perhaps a little austere but still harmonious. Silky but slightly stolid, this is a delicious Musigny, though I would not put it in the top tier of Mugnier’s oeuvre, since it lacks substance due to the growing season.

The 2009 Musigny is a huge, structured wine within the context of the domaine. Big, tannins support a highly expressive core of dark fruit, smoke and licorice. This is a decidedly powerful, almost extreme style of Musigny that will require considerable patience to settle down. An explosive, mineral-drenched finish lingers on the palate. The 2009 is flat-out dazzling. Wow.

The 2010 Musigny is breathtaking. It is at once weightless yet full of flavor and dynamism. There is marvelous tension and sheer energy in the fruit, while certain elements of virility – especially in the tannin – seem to develop as the wine sits in the glass. Like all of the Mugnier wines, the Musigny is really a wine built on textural finesse and a certain elusiveness that asks more of the taster than it offers. It represents the height of sensuality and unknowable beauty in Burgundy. In many ways Mugnier's Musigny resembles Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's Romanée-Conti. No matter how much time I spend with the wine there is always more to discover.

Mugnier's 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a terrific success in the 2015 vintage and is strongly reminiscent of the excellent 2005 rendition, opening in the glass with aromas of creamy cassis, ripe cherry, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and sapid, with succulent acids, an ample chassis of rich tannins and excellent length. This is one of the rare cases of a great Burgundy from a great domaine that is available in some volume, and no one should fixate on Mugnier's Chambolles at the expense of this lovely Nuits.

This really saturates the mouth with intense red fruit, mineral and floral flavors. Finishes very long, with wonderfully suave tannins. Very sexy now, but this has to shut down, doesn't it?

Deep red. Classic aromas of small wild red berries, mocha and underbrush. Broad, sweet and deep-particularly impressive in the context of the vintage-without any loss of clarity or aromatic lift. Wonderfully suave, full wine that's also surprisingly tastable today. Finishes with noble tannins, noteworthy sweetness of fruit and terrific lift. This one should probably be laid down for seven or eight years.
