    Domaine Jacques Prieur

    About Domaine Jacques Prieur

Since 1868, Domaine Jacques Prieur has quietly but diligently assembled what may just be the single most extensive collections of vineyards of any single Domaine in the region. One of, or quite probably the only, vineyard owning estates in Burgundy to currently own plots across both Côte de Beaune and Nuits, collectors have been seeking out and delighting in the wines of Jacques Prieur for centuries.

Today, one of France’s greatest female winemakers is at the helm, overseeing a mosaic of truly exceptional terroirs. Nadine Gublin was in fact named Best Winemaker in France by the Revue de Vin de France in 1998, and has done nothing but improve her methods and knowledge since then. Examples of this include the move towards some selective whole-bunch fermentation and the well-judged usage of between 50 and 80% new oak barrels for their Grands Crus.

(12% potential alcohol chaptalized to 12.7%; little frost effect here; this was racked in December and moved to cuve for a February bottling): Bright, dark red. Spicy raspberry and licorice aromas conveys a rather cool quality. Quite restrained on the palate, offering crunchy flavors of currant, licorice and crushed stone and an impression of brisk acidity. (These vines are planted on very light, thin soil over a lot of small rocks, according to winemaker Nadine Gublin.) Perhaps still a bit youthfully imploded but I find this easy to drink.

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed and has a lovely blackberry, briar and mineral-driven bouquet that feels well defined and vivacious. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, very grippy tannins that lacquer the mouth. This is a bold, assertive Chambertin; what it needs is a little more nuance and precision toward the finish. Maybe that will evolve with time.

    Vinous (93-94)

(tasted from barrel): Good pale yellow with green highlights. Pure but restrained nose hints at underripe pineapple, lime and menthol. Denser and fatter than the Meursault Perrieres, with a more accessible sweetness making it easier to taste today. The sound lemony acidity here is masked by the power of the wine. Finishes very ripe, rich, minerally and long. This should offer outstanding aging potential in the context of the vintage; I wouldn't think about opening a bottle for at least six years.

    Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2016 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93-94)

(harvested last among the whites, on September 29; no frost here): Bright, green-tinged yellow. Highly distinctive aromas of lime, powdered stone, mint, pine needles and white pepper; fruit is the least of it! A seriously concentrated wine of terroir, showing lovely powdered-stone lift to its flavors of menthol, chalk, brown bread and fresh mushroom. Saline, tightly wound wine with lovely clarity and inner-mouth tension; quite dry but plenty ripe. The salty, tactile finish saturates the palate and leaves the taste buds quivering. Very Corton-Charlemagne! (12.6% without chaptalization)

    Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru was poured after the Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet and perhaps does not quite deliver the same details and intellect on the nose. Still, there are attractive peach skin and lemon curd notes, plus a touch of hazelnut and almond surfacing with time. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, delivering the weight and rondeur you expect from a Corton-Charlemagne and an almost honeyed texture. Touches of lemongrass appear toward the finish. This is a thoroughly enjoyable Corton-Charlemagne in the making and it will probably need less aging than the aforementioned grand crus.

    Vinous (95+)

(13.8%; from 30- and 60+-year-old vines; 3-1/2 barrels made, versus just 1 in 2016): Bright dark red. Sappy, pure aromas of black and red fruits and pungent minerals lifted by a floral topnote. Wonderfully penetrating and smooth, displaying outstanding intensity and class to its fruit and savory mineral flavors. Offers a compelling combination of velour and weightlessness. Thick and seamless but still youthfully tight, this very pure wine finishes with superb subtle rising length. This very cool site can perform splendidly in hot years like 2015; indeed, the estate harvested these vines at the end, on September 11. But winemaker Gublin noted that the first vintage was 1996 and that the estate has never had a negative surprise, in either cold or hot years. I prefer this wine to the Chambertin for its suavity. And here the terroir (Domaine Prieur's vines are in Les Champs Traversins and Les Poulaillères) dominates the vintage character. A wine of great panache.

Jacques Prieur Echezeaux Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-91)

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed. It has a slightly conservative bouquet with pure dark cherry and cranberry aromas, but does not quite deliver the nuance and complexity of the best wines from this vineyard in 2017. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, but very strict and stoic, tight-lipped towards the finish. Hopefully this will gain more personality once it is in bottle.

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which is completely de-stemmed, has a very intense, almost heady bouquet with layers of black cherry and cassis fruit; a dash of black pepper emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, and very powerful for this vineyard, but it manages to maintain balance. The finish offers great length and satisfying freshness to counterbalance the fruit intensity. This might well be the pick of Prieur’s reds this year.

Perfumed aromas of peach, nuts and salted butter. Fat and sweet to the point of exotic, with a dominant flavor of apricot. Distinctly warmer and less gripping than the Champs-Pimont. This very ripe, plump wine is a bit heavy and lacking in shape.

Bright pale yellow. Captivating aromas of lemon zest, wild herbs and menthol. Dense, saline and stuffed with fruit, with a pronounced saline quality and seriously strong acidity giving the wine terrific force for a 2011. Very young and slow to reveal itself. Gublin noted that this wine has been locked up tight from very early on. She planned to rack it in the days following my visit.

(40 hectoliters per hectare produced from vines that escaped hail damage; totally destemmed): Bright, dark red. Aromas of cherry, raspberry and licorice seem a bit shallow following the Pommard Les Charmots. A juicy, fresh wine with saline flavors of red berries, spices and earth.

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru, which is completely de-stemmed, has a very sensual and generous bouquet with very pretty black cherries, raspberry preserve, overripe Satsuma and mineral scents that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, more backward than the aromatics at the moment but very well balanced with super-fine tannin framing the feminine and quite persistent finish. Good potential here.

But the tannins come off as a bit dry and tough owing to the wine's modest mid-palate depth.
