Domaine Jacques Prieur Meursault Clos de Mazeray Monopole 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (85-87)

The 2015 Meursault Clos de Mazeray is 50% fermented in large foudres. It has a clean and crisp, fresh pear and watermelon-scented bouquet with moderate intensity. The palate is balanced with pear, kiwi fruit and dried mango notes, balanced with good weight, leading to a waxy finish. Not quite up to the 2014, but that was expected. Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Jacques Prieur Chambertin Grand Cru 2003 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92)

Prieur’s 0.8-hectare (2-acre) holding in Chambertin produced a meager 75 cases of wine in 2003. A medium to full-bodied wine, it displays a nose of waxy black fruits. Harmonious, fresh, and expressive, this toast and black cherry-laced offering displays outstanding depth, ripeness, and length. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016.

Jacques Prieur Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2015 Chambertin Grand Cru does not include any whole bunch this year, but does include vines in Clos-de-Bèze. It matured in 70% new oak. It has a velvety smooth bouquet that is very seductive: black cherries, creme de cassis and iodine aromas that unfurl from the glass. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe tannin. This is very juicy with very good weight in the mouth, although I would like to see more precision and terroir expression develop on the finish.

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, one of the smallest productions ever at a solitary barrel, has a tightly wound bouquet that is missing a little mineralité. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, hints of peach and dried apricot, quite conservative toward the finish with a touch of almond and a light sea spray influence. I would just like more complexity and personality here. I want it to sing of Chevalier-Montrachet!

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru includes 30% whole bunch fruit. It has a succinct bouquet, quite understated compared to others that I have tasted, but well defined with black cherries, bergamot and pomegranate aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, tensile tannin. There is a keen thread of acidity here, gently grip with a slightly chalky textured, but energetic finish with pleasing frisson. Enjoy this over the next 15-20 years.

Jacques Prieur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92+)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is also quite youthfully reserved, reluctantly revealing reticent aromas of earthy cassis and spices that's framed by a nicely integrated but generous application of new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and chewy, with a broad and chunky attack, a rich chassis of tannins and bright acids, concluding with a firm, somewhat angular finish. While the wine's equilibrium appears to have been impacted by the frost, the raw materials are sufficiently promising that I suspect time will be kind to it and round out its hard edges.

Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

Burghound (90-93)

A notably floral-inflected nose somewhat grudgingly reveals a layered array of spice, wood, earth and various red berry fruit scents. There is good volume if not quite the same mid-palate concentration as that of the Clos des Santenots, all wrapped in a sleek, vibrant, focused and moderately structured finish. This is a classic Bressandes that should flesh more out with time in bottle.

Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2015 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru includes around one-third whole bunch fruit this year. Again, the stems are disguised on the nose that is well defined, offering more black fruit than red, an underlying cold stone/mineral edge becoming more apparent as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is commendable depth here, smooth and velvety in the mouth but that stony element become more apparent on the energetic finish. Give this 4-5 years to mellow and just shave the edge off of those tannins.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2016 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is still quite youthfully reticent, unwinding in the glass to reveal a rich bouquet of ripe cherries, cassis and blood orange that's complemented by enticing carnal hints of grilled and smoked meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a succulent but gourmand core of fruit that entirely cloaks its broad-shouldered chassis of powdery structuring tannins, concluding with a long, nicely defined finish. There's sufficient extract here, so this Bressandes may well shut down; a decade's patience is advised.

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières was produced in exactly the same quantity as in 2015. Matured in 25% new oak, it has a perfumed bouquet with white peach and hazelnut aromas, perhaps needing a little more tension and terroir expression to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine, quite steely opening. It feels harmonious and precise, although I would seek more mineralité to be on display on the finish.

The 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru has a little more energy and mineralité than the Chevalier-Montrachet this year, the terroir more expressive and lending more tension and bite. The palate is fresh and energetic with a fine bead of acidity, impressive weight with a caressing, quite voluminous finish that lingers long. There is something suitably aristocratic about this Montrachet that surpasses the Chevalier-Montrachet.

The Prieur 2005 Musigny delivers a gorgeous bouquet of diverse, sweet flowers, cassis laced, with lemon zest, spices and humus. Sleek, polished and silken-textured in the mouth, this wine offers superb concentration of super-ripe fruit with marrowy meatiness, but with more refinement and youthful class than the Chambertin, not to mention a buoyancy and dynamism and a sheer infectious juiciness in its finish, loaded with bitter-sweet florals.

The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru perhaps somewhat predictably has the most sophisticated bouquet amongst Prieur's red wines, with mulberry and blackberry notes infused with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin that feel quite bony at the moment, although it will mellow and gain more harmony. There is very fine focus on the finish with attractive salinity on the finish. Afford this a decade in the cellar if you can.

The 2016 Musigny Grand Cru consists of three barrels from one hectare, with one new barrel and 100% whole bunch. This has a lifted bouquet, very perfumed with crushed violets, blue fruit and fine mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, tensile and focused. There is moderate depth, quite chalky in style with a precise, stony finish. I hope that it gains a little flesh on the finish to match the pulchritude of the aromatics.

Jacques Prieur Montrachet Grand Cru 2016 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru has a little more energy and mineralité than the Chevalier-Montrachet this year, the terroir more expressive and lending more tension and bite. The palate is fresh and energetic with a fine bead of acidity, impressive weight with a caressing, quite voluminous finish that lingers long. There is something suitably aristocratic about this Montrachet that surpasses the Chevalier-Montrachet.

Jacques Prieur Musigny Grand Cru 2005 (3x150cl)

Wine Advocate (94-95)

The Prieur 2005 Musigny delivers a gorgeous bouquet of diverse, sweet flowers, cassis laced, with lemon zest, spices and humus. Sleek, polished and silken-textured in the mouth, this wine offers superb concentration of super-ripe fruit with marrowy meatiness, but with more refinement and youthful class than the Chambertin, not to mention a buoyancy and dynamism and a sheer infectious juiciness in its finish, loaded with bitter-sweet florals.

Jacques Prieur Musigny Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru perhaps somewhat predictably has the most sophisticated bouquet amongst Prieur's red wines, with mulberry and blackberry notes infused with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin that feel quite bony at the moment, although it will mellow and gain more harmony. There is very fine focus on the finish with attractive salinity on the finish. Afford this a decade in the cellar if you can.

Jacques Prieur Musigny Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2016 Musigny Grand Cru consists of three barrels from one hectare, with one new barrel and 100% whole bunch. This has a lifted bouquet, very perfumed with crushed violets, blue fruit and fine mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, tensile and focused. There is moderate depth, quite chalky in style with a precise, stony finish. I hope that it gains a little flesh on the finish to match the pulchritude of the aromatics.
