Domaine Jean Chartron

About Domaine Jean Chartron

Jean-Michel Chartron is the fifth generation winemaker of Domaine Jean Chartron, which has origins dating back to 1873. Their influence on Puligny’s heritage was cemented when the Domaine successfully petitioned to add the name of the most famous local vineyard ‘Montrachet’ to that of the village; thus Puligny Montrachet came into being.

Originally the Domaine sold most of its wines to negociants until 1989. Since the 90s they have expanded into St. Aubin and Chassagne to their present holdings of 13 hectares, including three outstanding monopoles: Chevalier Montrachet “Clos du Chevaliers,” Clos du Cailleret and Clos de la Pucelle, all in the family since 1917. Jean-Michel is expertly crafting some of the finest wines in Puligny-Montrachet; generous yet always sophisticated in style.

2017

Jean Chartron Chassagne-Montrachet Les Benoites 2017 (6x75cl)

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet les Benoites has a similar bouquet to the nascent Saint-Aubins from Chartron: peach skin and lime flower emerging on the nose, again, just a hint of liquorish. The palate is quite intense on the entry. It has a fine bead of acidity, lightly spice (ginger and lemongrass) with an orange sorbet note towards the sustained finish. Very fine, especially considering that this is not a Premier Cru.

Jean Chartron Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from Charlemagne and the Pernand side of the hill, comprises two barrels from the domaine and three barrels from two other sources. It comes across surprisingly closed on the nose. Maybe just going through a dumb phase of élevage? The palate is medium-bodied and much more expressive, gorgeous yellow plum and pithy/peachy notes with a caressing finish. Once the aromatics awaken, this should be a very seductive "CC".

2018

Jean Chartron Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl)

Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru is not necessarily my pick of Chartron’s cuvées, although I have to say that it has a knockout bouquet of clementine, apricot and gunflint scents, plus hints of shaved almond in the background. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, presenting veins of bitter lemon mixed with fresh pear and ginger. The feisty finish might lack the finesse of the Chevalier-Montrachet but is definitely pleasing to the senses. Bad news: just one flippin’ feuillette to go round (150 bottles).

Jean Chartron Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Pucelle 2018 (6x75cl) Very concentrated conveying a definitive step up from the villages wines. Beautifully structured and balanced. An ineffable, slightly intangible sense of aristocracy to this wine makes it all the more compelling.

Jean Chartron Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret 2018 (6x75cl)

Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru has great potential. It has a complex, mineral-driven bouquet with honeysuckle and light jasmine aromas complementing the mineral scents. The poised, citric palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, with real bite and race and impressive tension on the finish. Excellent.

Jean Chartron Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Folatieres 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Folatieres offers quite a generous bouquet with subtle hints of passion fruit and lychee filtering through the citrus fruit. The palate is rounded, quite rich with a honeyed texture, powerful and lightly spiced with an insistent finish that lingers in the mouth. It is a bullish and comparatively outgoing Folatières that will hopefully gain mineralité before bottling to complete the wine.

Wine Advocate (92)

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of pear, white flowers, orange oil and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and precise, it's bright and lively, concluding with a saline finish.

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village reveals pretty aromas of white peach, spring flowers and pastry cream, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample palate that's the most pure and elegant of Chartron's communal appellations this year. It will be well worth seeking out.

Jean Chartron Rully Montmorin 2018 (6x75cl)

Vinous (88)

The 2018 Rully Montmorin, which was bottled a week prior to my visit at the end of August, has a pretty orange blossom and Conference pear bouquet, more generous than the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc. The palate is lovely and fat on the entry, tropical notes (guava and lime) defining the midpalate and a touch of spice surfacing on the finish. Delicious.

Jean Chartron Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2016 St Aubin 1er Cru les Murgers des Dents de Chien had a small reduction on the nose that enhanced the vibrant green apple and slate like aromas. The palate is tensile, quite angular on the entry, modest weight in the mouth but I find more precision on the finish compared to the Perrières this year. This is a well-crafted Saint Aubin from one of its most reputed vineyards.
