Jean Tardy
Domaine Jean Tardy is a leading estate in the Cote d’Or. Jean Tardy inherited it from his father in 1970, passing it to his son Guillaume who has run it since 2003 with a clear vision. Using strict green harvested he has also reduced yields annually. The aim is to make wine with the purest fruit, finesse and elegance.

Vinous (82)The 2013 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits is fully mature on the nose and now lacks energy. The palate is fleshy but rather bitter with a flagging finish suggesting this has run its course. Bottles should be drunk in the near future or yesterday. Tasted at Flint Wines' Value Burgundy tasting. |

Vinous (87)(from 40-year-old vines; no new oak here): Good medium red. Dark berries and spicy, slightly resiny oak on the nose. Lightly saline and round, with harmonious ripe acidity framing the sappy purple fruit flavors. This supple, spicy wine should offer early appeal. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87-88)(from 45-year-old vines in Concoeur, in the hills behind Vosne-Romanée; there was no frost here in 2016 but vines in a small valley just 500 meters away were decimated, according to Tardy; 12.1% natural alcohol chaptalized to 12.8%): Healthy dark red. Ripe, sappy aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and licorice. A medium-bodied wine with sweet berry and cherry fruit flavors framed by a firm edge of acidity and complicated by a leathery nuance. Lovely vinosity here, with an acidulated red fruit character and fine, dusty tannins that suggest this wine will evolve slowly. Tardy told me that Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet and Domaine Arlaud own vines in the same windy, rocky, essentially flat site. |

Vinous (92)The 2016 Echézeaux Les Treux Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru certainly has one of the better aromatics from this Grand Cru with harmonious, well defined black cherry and raspberry fruit laced with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, fresh in the mouth with a focused and structured finish. Whilst it just has a touch of abruptness about it, otherwise this is a very well crafted Echézeaux. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. |

Vinous (88)Dark medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, mocha and menthol are a bit lower-toned and more rustic than those of the 2015. Then surprisingly supple and sweet in the mouth, offering pliant red fruit flavors. Finishes with dusty, slightly oak-influenced tannins and good length and lift. |

Vinous (87-89)(13% natural alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Pungent aromas of blackberry, menthol, licorice and violet. Intense, juicy and penetrating; still quite primary and tight but nicely balanced. The late-arriving tannins make this a relatively supple style of Fixin. |

Vinous (88-89)(one-third new oak): Dark red-ruby color. Ripe black cherry and dark chocolate on the nose. Silky on entry, then nicely round for Fixin, with its flavors of blackberry, boysenberry and bitter chocolate given shape by well-integrated acidity; shows slightly medicinal kirsch character. The tannins arrive late and build, while remaining harmonious and supple. Production was 38 hectoliters per hectare, as there was little frost here. |

Vinous (92)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes has one of the more outgoing bouquets that I tasted from Tardy, featuring forward red cherry, raspberry coulis and pressed rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, cohesive and focused, and yet it might be missing the complexity shown by the 2018 on the finish, where it decides to play it safe. Still, this is a very attractive Gevrey-Chambertin. |

Vinous (92)The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes has quite a voluminous bouquet of precocious dark cherries, bergamot and floral scents, certainly one of the more expressive of Guillaume Tardy’s 2018s at this early juncture. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and rounded in style, presenting tobacco-tinged red fruit toward the smooth and quite persistent finish. There is a dash of black pepper on the aftertaste. Very fine. |

Vinous (92)The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes has a nicely detailed and terroir expressive bouquet, brambly red fruit mixed with sous-bois and light truffle aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, silky smooth in texture with a precise and quite pure finish. One of my picks from Tardy this year. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes has quite a dense bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, an attractive floral element that becomes more pronounced with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, lightly spiced with a touch of candied orange peel towards the finish. Lovely silky texture here. Stylish and quite persistent. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has a lovely, vivacious and generous bouquet of dark cherries, violet, hints of meat juices and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and quite strict and linear at the moment, but I appreciate the depth and persistence on the aftertaste. One that is saving itself for later. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has greater intensity on the nose compared to the Champs Perrières, and the fruit profile is a notch darker. The palate is medium-bodied with a grippy, masculine entry. Broody and backward, this is a Nuits Saint-Georges that will benefit from cellaring. Very saline on the marine-tinged finish. Plenty of character and class here. One for the long term. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has quite a backward yet precise nose, dark cherries, iodine and violet scents. Good definition but surly at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline on the finish but the compactness of this cuvée suggests that it will need 4-5 years in bottle. |

Vinous (88)The 2002 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a really engaging, vivacious bouquet with smudged red cherries, kirsch, peppermint and undergrowth scents. The palate is medium-bodied with thick, grippy tannin. This feels quite savoury at 16-years of age, almost animally towards the finish but still quite attractive. I would drink this over the next five or six years. Tasted at Sarah Marsh MW’s 2002 Red Burgundy tasting. |

Vinous (92-94)Matured in around 40% new oak, the 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Vieilles Vignes has a very controlled, focused bouquet of raspberry and bilberry fruit, beautifully defined and very terroir-expressive. The palate is well balanced and stylistically equidistant between Nuits Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée, betraying its geographical location. The 85-year-old vines impart great concentration but also immense quality, more Premier Cru than Village Cru. Superb. |

Vinous (89)The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Vigneux offers plenty of black cherries, boysenberry and floral scents on the nose, open and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of sweet fruit, fine tannins and density, quite sapid with a bit of muscle on the finish that will stand it in good stead for mid-term ageing. |
