Langoa Barton

Thomas Barton left Ireland to start a Bordeaux negociant firm in 1722. His family purchased this Saint Julien estate in 1821 and it has stayed in the same family since. They use traditional winemaking techniques but their cooler terroir, closer to the centre of Saint Julien gives them a rich vibrant style.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (90)

Deep ruby-purple. Liqueur-like aromas of kirsch, blackberry and mint. Lush, fresh and primary, with mouthfilling black fruit flavors and a layered texture. Finishes with substantial but ripe tannins. Avoids the hard edges of the vintage. A very good early showing.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (94+)

Deep ruby. Very ripe, powerful aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice and bitter chocolate. Sweet, dense, ripe and deep, with outstanding purity and intensity to its plush black fruit and spice flavors. This has the sweetness of a great Napa Valley cabernet along with buns of steel. Finishes with penetrating fruit and outstanding verve and persistence. For all its creamy richness, this should be extremely long-lived.

Wine Enthusiast (92)

The wine now in bottle has maintained the lively character found in the barrel tasting. Added to that is a firm structure, with layers of wood and intense acidity. This wine will age over the medium-term, so drink from 2019.

The fresh blueberry, cherry and black currant flavors give this a wide range, while racy graphite and a mouthwatering anise streak drive the finish. The fruit is so enticing that you lose track of how solidly built this is through the finish.

Loads of red and black currants, lead pencil shavings, tobacco, and dried flower notes emerge from the 2020 Château Langoa Barton, a gorgeous looking 2020 offering medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It has the concentrated, backward vibe of the vintage yet brings remarkable opulence and texture. It's impressive.
