    Marchesi Barolo

The cellars of Marchesi di Barolo are situated in the heart of the legendary Piemontese town of Barolo, however the wines come from further afield as well as the local, eponymous vineyards. Wines from Asti, Langhe and Barbaresco all exhibit a clear sense of place and individual identity; a clear indication of the focus on terroir and style.

The 2014 Barolo Cannubi offers limited depth and complexity in this vintage. There is god silkiness and pliancy to the red tone fruit, but that is not enough to make up for the wine's lack of depth or structure.

The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is creamy and open-knit, with soft curves and a slightly mature profile of dried fruit, cedar, tobacco, dried flowers and spice. The 2015 offers good depth, but I would not push my luck on aging, as the flavors are already a bit dried out.

The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is compact and unyieldingly austere. I don't see the charm, depth or pliancy that are the signatures of Cannubi.

Marchesi di Barolo's 2012 Barolo Riserva is a solid wine to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet tobacco, cedar, licorice, dried herbs and red fruit all open up in the glass. Even so, it would be nice to see more depth, intensity and overall pedigree for a Riserva. Given its mid-weight structure and feel, I would prefer to drink the 2012 over the next handful of years. All of the elements are very nicely balanced.

The 2018 Barbaresco Tradizione is a soft, easygoing wine. Dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, brown spice and dried flowers are signs of a Barbaresco that is maturing at a pretty fast clip. Even so, the 2018 will drink well for another few years.

The 2017 Barolo Tradizione is a soft, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the red cherry/plum fruit remains vibrant. This tasty Barolo certainly offers plenty of immediacy in an easygoing if somewhat fleeting style.
