Vinous (91)Molitor has bypassed the usual “two-star” rendition of Klosterberg Pinot and instead classified the 2015 installment as “three-star.” On the nose, decidedly meaty, marrowy savor joins the shrimp-shell stock familiar from the corresponding Mandelgraben: you know that the palate is going to be rich in proteins and minerals! But there is abundant red currant and sour cherry fruit, too, which translates into welcome tang and refreshing brightness. The feel is firm and slightly grainy. Rose hip, cherry pit and smoky black tea add interest to a mouthwateringly salt-tinged, impressively persistent finish, albeit one capped with just a hint of extraneous toasted oak. This should gain significantly in bottle. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2020 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese * (Golden Capsule) shows concentrated lemon fruit and crushed blue slate aromas with spicy notes. Just bottled in June, this Auslese is still pretty reductive, yet it shows its true elegance and finesse on the nose. Very elegant, fresh and salty on the palate, this is a savory, almost dry-finishing Auslese from the Graacher Himmelreich that is characterized by remarkably precise and sharp but ripe acidity that is intermingled with the saline taste and causes a salivating finish. Though still too young to full shine, this is a highly promising Auslese. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 134 22 in July 2022. |

Wine Advocate (93+)Molitor's 2020 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett (Green Capsule) is super clear, bright and intense on the utterly slatey, herbal and very delicate, even iodine and, with enough aeration, spectacular nose. Lush and round on the textured palate, this is an intense and juicy but most of all saline Kabinett that lifts everything and leads to an almost dry-tasting yet fruity and juicy finish. There is great precision and piquancy here; think of candied lime rind or maybe a mojito. This is an irresistible Kabinett from the Himmelreich in Graach and is one of the best in its category again. 9% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. |

Vinous (95)Pear preserves and apple jelly are allied to bright fresh lemon and lime in this three-star performance. The palate presence is creamy in texture and almost custardy in its richness and underlying extract, yet at the same time buoyant and electrically charged with citricity. The flavors begin heading in a confitured and confectionary direction but are then restrained by high acidity. The alternation of creaminess and brightness, honeyed richness and citricity continues through a lusciously lingering finish in which a hint of caramel serves as a further, delightfully integrated botrytis marker. This is another of those embryonic Molitor 2015s that will need time to display their mettle, but it already conveys amazing concentration and persistence, not to mention a remarkable sense of energy. |

Vinous (92)Jellied and candied apple are garlanded in decadent lily. Hints of bruised apple skin supply aromatic and flavor contrast while remaining consistent with the themes of concentration and decay-by-botrytis. Nutty piquancy and an undertone of wet stone, unexpected in such a rich Auslese, add further intrigue on a soft, viscous palate, leading into a long, caramel-kissed finish that introduces a welcome hint of fresh apple juiciness, and whose sheer sweetness stops just short of becoming cloying. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2020 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (White Capsule) is clear, pure, intense and refined, spicy and flinty on the nose that shows fully ripe, yellow-golden Riesling fruit combined with flinty/savory slate aromas. Lush and dense yet crystalline and refined on the palate, this is an elegant, very intense and saline, concentrated and substantial Sonnenuhr Spätlese that is, analytically and also sensorially, certainly an Auslese that reveals a concentrated, lemon-fresh, savory and stimulating bitter finish with great substance and class. This 2020 is remarkably complex and tensioned, but it has stimulating, zesty salinity and serious tannin structure. This impressive dry (or dry styled?) Vinous (95)This dry-tasting three-star Auslese reflects some of Molitor’s lowest yields from a harvest of already meager volume. Pungent scents of wood smoke, grapefruit peel and quarry dust set the tone for a zesty, piquant, expansive palate that reflects both high dry extract and 12.5 percent alcohol in its sense of mouth-filling mass. Abundant juiciness of fresh grapefruit and white peach linger into a bright, bittersweetly nutty finish of vibratory intensity. As this opens to the air, it keeps getting more expressively complex and gripping: one more piece of evidence that in 2014, Zeltinger Schlossberg was capable of upstaging Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. |

Vinous (92)Decadent wisteria and lily perfume mingles with apple jelly, marzipan, white raisin and caramel on the nose. The impression on the soft, creamy, expansive, viscous palate is similarly decadent and confectionary, with a hint of bruised apple skin serving for lightly oxidative enhancement such as was witnessed in the corresponding Wehlener Sonnenuhr. This finishes with seductively soothing persistence. A sense of sweetness that threatened at midpalate to become cloying has the courtesy to back off slightly. Any sense of citricity present here is of candied peel, and anyone who places a premium on nobly sweet Riesling preserving freshness, clarity and animation will find those virtues impressively displayed in Molitor Auslesen other than this one, impressive though it is in its own way. |
